  • Stability and Change in the Udmurt Kuris’kon Prayers

nstitute of oriental languages and cultures, E Toulouze•ARTICLE•Incantatio An International…•2025

In Udmurt prayers, the texts have been slow to change in the last century. Although data are not complete, and we have only fractions of data about their evolution after the Revolution and during Soviet times, we know enough to understand that changes were introduced scarcely. In the last decades, especially in the two last decades, many changes have been introduced and the rhythm is increasing. This is the question this paper endeavours to explo…

  • The Adventures of Hungarian Scholars in Bashkiria (Expedition Work of Gábor Berecki and László Vikar)

    E Toulouze•ARTICLE•Istoriko-kulʹturnoe nasledie•2024

In the 1970s, the Hungarian scholars Gábor Bereczki and László Vikár, the first is a linguist and the second is a musicologist, were invited by the USSR Union of Composers to visit those autonomous republics of the Volga region that were open to foreigners in order to collect folk songs of different ethnic groups. It seems that a copy of these records were left to the local researchers. The Hungarians travelled to Bashkiria four times. This artic…

  • Preface to the Special Issue

Open Access•E Toulouze, Laur Vallikivi•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnology and…•2024

This special issue addresses the religion of the Finno-Ugric peoples, with a specific focus on animist religiosity and its contemporary expression in Finno-Ugric societies.*This is a subject that has recently featured prominently in significant forums, and this collection of papers is particularly influenced by discussions at two major conferences: the Congress of the European Association for the Study of Religions (EASR) in Cork in June 2022, an…

  • Kolmkümmend aastat udmurtide juures käimas. Mida olen õppinud

    Open Access•E Toulouze•ARTICLE•Mäetagused•2024

In my research, the Udmurt people occupy a central place. Today they are central also in my everyday life as I have paid visits to them already for 30 years because I felt that it was not enough to study only written sources and history. To understand people, their culture and mindset, you have to go to them, to see them in their everyday environment. In this article I would like to share what I have experienced when visiting them, and what I hav…

  • Eastern Udmurt Sacred Places, Yesterday and Today

    Open Access•R R Sadikov, E Toulouze•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnology and…•2024•Referencias: 10

Most Udmurt living in the Bashkortostan Republic and in the Perm' region of the Russian Federation are followers of a traditional ethnic religion. In their spiritual life, a huge place is occupied by sanctuaries and other places in which their ritual practices take place, such as the worship of deities, spirits and ancestors. We can identify different types of such places in this Udmurt regional group: the sanctuary dedicated to the cult of the c…

  • Udmurt Religious Practice Today

    Open Access•E Toulouze•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnology and…•2024•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 20

This article reflects on the complex Udmurt religious situation. The Udmurt, a minority group in Central Russia, have an animistic background and live today in different administrative units of the Russian Federation: they have their own Republic, Udmurtia, in which the majority of the population is composed by ethnic Orthodox Russians, but they live also, from West to East, in the Kirov oblast, in the Mari El Republic, in Tatarstan, in Bashkorto…

  • How do Udmurts address their God(s)

Paris France INALCO, E Toulouze et al.•ARTICLE•Incantatio An International…•2023

This article relies on a long-term fieldwork experience: Eva Toulouze has attended Udmurt animistic ceremonies in Bashkortostan over a period of ten years and has collected there the uttered prayers. These prayers are the corpus upon which our linguistic reflections are articulated. The language of the prayers represents a particular register of the Udmurt language. They are deeply dialectal, and while today they are mostly transmitted through wr…

  • Buying a God in Paris

Open Access•E Toulouze, Liivo Niglas et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnology and…•2022

This paper analyses highly creative and hybrid practices which tie the Indigenous Siberian, European Christian and Soviet worlds in unexpected ways. Reflecting on the Forest Nenets reindeer herder, poet and intellectual Yuri Vella’s understanding of the religious, the authors discuss an episode of turning an icon-like painting of Madonna with Child into a Nenets ‘god’. This took place in Paris half a year before Yuri’s death. First, we present hi…

  • Võit või lein? Venemaa 9. mai pidustuste kahemõttelisusest väiksest udmurdi külast vaadatuna

    Open Access•E Toulouze•ARTICLE•Mäetagused•2022

Each year on 9 May Russia celebrates Victory Day with great grandeur and pathos. However, it is difficult to realize from afar how deep the roots of this pathos are and what it actually means for people to participate in these celebrations. It is also worth mentioning that, besides drilled marching and national pathos, people in some villages are used to combining Victory Day celebrations with the spring commemorations of the dead

  • “We Cannot Pray Without Kumyshka ”

Open Access•E Toulouze, Laur Vallikivi•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnology and…•2021

We trace the history of the uses of the alcoholic drink known as kumyshka among the Udmurt. Our focus is on kumyshka ’s ritual uses both in public and domestic contexts in the second half of the 19th century, the early 20th century as well as the early 21st century. We suggest that kumyshka not only represents a site of resistance to the dominant religious regime, i.e. Russian Orthodoxy, but is also a tool for self-enhancement and identity making…

  • Uni ja unenäod udmurdi kultuuris

    Open Access•N Anisimov, E Toulouze•ARTICLE•Mäetagused•2021•Citada por: 1

In Udmurt culture sleep (iz’on, kölon, um) as well as dreams (vöt, uyvöt) have occupied a significant place. According to ordinary understandings, dreams are not subjected to this world’s rules of time and space: in a dream, places and spaces may suddenly change, and time moves quickly, or it does not move at all; it has stopped. Sleep and dreams are not thoroughly explained phenomena, and as such, they play a significant role in the communicatio…

    Open Access•E Toulouze, N Anisimov•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnology and…•2018

The authors had the opportunity, during their fieldwork, to attend spring rituals in Varkled-Böd’ya village. The week before the Great Day ( Bydjynnal , coinciding with Orthodox Easter) is a dense ritual week: there are young people to be initiated, boys first and girls at the concluding ritual, who thus become adults; there are evil spirits to be chased away from the space of the living; there are kin relations to be reinforced through reciproca…

  • A Man of Words and Silence

    Open Access•E Toulouze•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnology and…•2018

Yuri Vella (1948-2013) was a well-known personality in Western Siberia’s indigenous world. Unlike most Western Siberia indigenous inhabitants, Yuri Vella was exceptionally skilled with words. He used words in everyday life in order to achieve his goals, among which the main one was to protect his kin and neighbours in the forest from the destructions induced by the oil industry. He was able to hold his own in discussion with the oil industry repr…

  • Laulu ja proosa seosed metsaneenetsi narratiivides

    Open Access•Kaur Mägi, E Toulouze•ARTICLE•Mäetagused•2002

The article treats the song and narrative genres of the forest Nenets with an emphasis on what are or have been the connections between them, how a song is presented in the middle of a narrative or forms the core of one. Analysis is based on material collected by the authors. Since the forest Nenets claim that some of their fairy tales once used to be sung in full, historical material is used for comparison. Since there is very little older mater…
