  • Learning and identity development during interprofessional hospital placements

    Open Access•Saskia C M Oosterbaan-Lodder, Edmée A Kipping et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Teacher•2026

CONTEXT: Increasing numbers of healthcare students are trained within interprofessional hospital placements, where they learn to be part of the landscape of healthcare practice. Explicitly facilitating (inter)professional identity development has been recommended as a goal of these placements. We aimed to explore students' experiences during their placement, and its relation to their learning and identity development. METHODS: In this multicenter…

  • Twelve tips for designing, implementing and sustaining interprofessional training units on hospital wards

    Open Access•Saskia C M Oosterbaan-Lodder, Joyce Kors et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Teacher•2024

Dedicated Interprofessional Training Units (ITUs) in hospital wards are one way to prepare healthcare students for Interprofessional patient-centered care. Based on theoretical foundations, research, and our lived experiences of successes as well as failures, we propose 12 tips on how to prepare, implement, and sustain a dedicated ITU, combining the Grol & Wensing model for planning change with the Self-determination Theory of motivation. Start w…

  • Measuring cyber secure behavior of elementary and high school students in the Netherlands

Open Access•Jacob Willem Abraham Witsenboer, Klaas Sijtsma et al.•ARTICLE•Computers & Education•2022

School systems may pay attention to the fact that individuals and companies using smart devices are increasingly at risk of becoming victims of cybercrime. The literature on how effective students in developed countries such as the Netherlands are taught about cyber security skills during their school career is scarce. Although curriculum materials are available, scaling up computer science education is behind. Therefore, this study explores to w…

  • Complications and Healthcare Consumption of Pregnant Women with a Migrant Background

Open Access•H Heller, Annemijn V R de Vries et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Health Journal•2022

This cohort study found no differences in pregnancy-related complications, except for diabetes, nor different healthcare consumption, in women with a migrant background versus native Dutch, in a country with free health care access. However, women with a migrant background experienced more depressive symptoms, and when depressed their risk for hospital admission increased. Additional research is warranted to improve healthcare for this population

  • Improving Graduate Medical Education Through Faculty Empowerment Instead of Detailed Guidelines

    Karsten A van Loon, Fedde Scheele•ARTICLE•Academic Medicine•2021

Calls for improvement and reform in graduate medical education (GME) have led to more detail in educational and curricular guidelines. The current level of detail in curriculum guidelines for GME training programs is high, encompassing, for example, competency frameworks, entrustable professional activities, and milestones. In addition, faculty must employ an increasing number of assessment tools and elaborate portfolio systems for their resident…

  • What happens under the flag of direct observation, and how that matters

    Open Access•Chris B T Rietmeijer, Annette H Blankenstein et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Teacher•2021

INTRODUCTION: In competency-based medical education, direct observation (DO) of residents' skills is scarce, notwithstanding its undisputed importance for credible feedback and assessment. A growing body of research is investigating this discrepancy. Strikingly, in this research, DO as a concrete educational activity tends to remain vague. In this study, we concretised DO of technical skills in postgraduate longitudinal training relationships. ME…

  • Team member expectations of trainee communicator and collaborator competencies – so shines a good deed in a weary world

Kerry Wilbur, Pim W Teunissen et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Teacher•2021

BACKGROUND: Workplace-based assessment may be further optimized by drawing upon the perspectives of multiple assessors, including those outside the trainee's discipline. Interprofessional competencies like communication and collaboration are often considered suitable for team input. AIM: We sought to characterize multidisciplinary expectations of communicator and collaborator competency roles. METHODS: We adopted a constructivist grounded theory …

  • Living in a World of Change

Jeffrey Damon Dagnone, Ming-Ka Chan et al.•ARTICLE•Academic Medicine•2020

Within graduate medical education, many educators are experiencing a climate of significant change. One transformation, competency-based medical education (CBME), is occurring simultaneously across much of the world, and implementation will require navigating numerous tensions and paradoxes. Successful transformation requires many types of power and is most likely to happen when the medical education community of professionals is engaged in desig…

  • How Do Attending Physicians Prepare Residents to Deliver High-Value, Cost-Conscious Care

    Open Access•Lorette A Stammen, Lorette Stammen et al.•ARTICLE•Academic Medicine•2020

PURPOSE: An estimated 20% of health care expenditures are wasteful. Educational interventions aimed at reducing waste by delivering high-value, cost-conscious care (HV3C) often focus on the role of the physician. This study sought to understand how attending physicians, who have a central role in the workplace, prepare residents to provide HV3C. METHOD: Researchers from Maastricht University in Maastricht, the Netherlands, conducted semistructure…

  • An international study on teachers’ conceptions of learning and teaching and corresponding teacher profiles

    Open Access•Johanna C G Jacobs, Janneke Wilschut et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Teacher•2020

Introduction: Teachers’ conceptions of learning and teaching (COLT) affect their teaching behaviour. The 18 item COLT instrument has been developed in the Netherlands and comprises three scales, ‘teacher centredness’, ‘appreciation of active learning’ and ‘orientation to professional practice’. Previously we found five teacher profiles. The aim of this study was to find out if the COLT instrument can be used in an international setting. Methods: D…

  • What can regulatory bodies do to help implement competency-based medical education

Markku T Nousiainen, Fedde Scheele et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Teacher•2020

In response to the numerous challenges resident trainees currently face in their ability to competently acquire the requisite skills, knowledge and attitudes upon graduation, medical educators have looked to a competency-based medical education (CBME) approach as a possible solution. As CBME has already been implemented in many jurisdictions around the world, certain challenges in implementation have been experienced. One important challenge iden…

  • Strengthening human and physical infrastructure of primary healthcare settings to deliver hypertension care in Vietnam

    Open Access•Lana Meiqari, Thi-Phuong-Lan Nguyen et al.•ARTICLE•Health Policy and Planning•2020•Referencias: 26

In Vietnam, the overall prevalence of hypertension (HTN) was 21%, with lower estimates for the prevalence of HTN awareness and treatment. The health systems, like other low- and middle-income countries, were designed to provide acute care for episodic conditions, rather than a chronic condition where patients need long-term care across time and disciplines. This article describes the delivery and organization of HTN care at primary healthcare (PH…

  • Learning to doctor

Open Access•Iris Wallenburg, Antoinette De Bont et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Health & Illness•2013•Citada por: 9•Referencias: 11

Medical doctors in teaching hospitals aim to serve the two central goals of patient care and medical training. Whereas patient care asks for experience, expertise and close supervision, medical training requires space to practise and the 'invisibility' of medical residents. Yet current reforms in postgraduate medical training point to an increasing emphasis on the measurable visibility of residents. Drawing on an ethnographic study of gynaecology…

  • Viewpoint

Olle ten Cate, Fedde Scheele•ARTICLE•Academic Medicine•2007

The introduction of competency-based postgraduate medical training, as recently stimulated by national governing bodies in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, The Netherlands, and other countries, is a major advancement, but at the same time it evokes critical issues of curricular implementation. A source of concern is the translation of general competencies into the practice of clinical teaching. The authors observe confusion around t…
