An Investigation of the Phonetic Variation of the Word-Initial /l/ and /n/ Across Regional Varieties of Mandarin
This study investigates how word-initial /l/ and /n/ are phonetically realized in Mandarin Chinese as produced by speakers from three regions: Beijing (close to Standard Mandarin), Changsha (where Xiang, which contains /l/ but not /n/, is also spoken locally), and Meizhou (where Hakka, which contains both /l/ and /n/, is also spoken locally), focusing on acoustic cue use and phonological context effects. A corpus-based study of quoi in French native speech
Based on data drawn from two corpora collected in Orléans, France, in two waves (ESLO 1, 1968–1971; ESLO 2, 2008–) over a 40-year period, this paper investigated the use of quoi as a discourse marker (DM) in the speech of 234 French native speakers. Our results indicate that the DM quoi has increased in frequency in the more recent corpus. The distribution of its discursive functions has changed between the two corpora. Based on data extracted from two French sociolinguistic corpora, ESLO 1 (1968–1971) and ESLO 2 (2008–), this article discusses the case of a new linguistic variation and change in French native speech in France: the fortition of the word-initial fricative /ʒ/. The Effect of Pitch Accent on the Perception of English Lexical Stress
The relative weighting of f0 and vowel reduction in English spoken word recognition at the sentence level were investigated in one two-alternative forced-choice word identification experiment. This article statistically examines how competitive communities perceive conflict, cooperation, and social cohesion drivers across the borders of two Sudans. We found that perceptions differ by gender, relationship types, and the assets competing groups depend on for their livelihoods.
