  • Aligning evidence generation and use across health, development, and environment

Open Access•Heather Tallis, Katharine Kreis et al.•ARTICLE•Current Opinion in Environmental…•2019•Referencias: 6

Although health, development, and environment challenges are interconnected, evidence remains fractured across sectors due to methodological and conceptual differences in research and practice. Aligned methods are needed to support Sustainable Development Goal advances and similar agendas. The Bridge Collaborative, an emergent research-practice collaboration, presents principles and recommendations that help harmonize methods for evidence generat…

  • The surface urban heat island response to urban expansion

  • Impact of urbanization on US surface climate

Open Access•Lahouari Bounoua, Ping Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2015

We combine Landsat and MODIS data in a land model to assess the impact of urbanization on US surface climate. For cities built within forests, daytime urban land surface temperature (LST) is much higher than that of vegetated lands. For example, in Washington DC and Atlanta, daytime mean temperature differences between impervious and vegetated lands reach 3.3 and 2.0 °C, respectively. Conversely, for cities built within arid lands, such as Phoeni…

  • A global map of urban extent from nightlights

Open Access•Yuyu Zhou, Steven J Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2015

Urbanization, a major driver of global change, profoundly impacts our physical and social world, for example, altering not just water and carbon cycling, biodiversity, and climate, but also demography, public health, and economy. Understanding these consequences for better scientific insights and effective decision-making unarguably requires accurate information on urban extent and its spatial distributions. We developed a method to map the urban…

  • Linking Climate to Incidence of Zoonotic Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (L. major) in Pre-Saharan North Africa

Open Access•Lahouari Bounoua, Kholoud Kahime et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2013

Shifts in surface climate may have changed the dynamic of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL) in the pre-Saharan zones of North Africa. Caused by Leishmania major, this form multiplies in the body of rodents serving as reservoirs of the disease. The parasite is then transmitted to human hosts by the bite of a Phlebotomine sand fly (Diptera: Psychodidae) that was previously fed by biting an infected reservoir. We examine the seasonal and intera…

  • Bright is the new black—multi-year performance of high-albedo roofs in an urban climate

    Open Access•Stuart R Gaffin, Marc L Imhoff et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2012

High-albedo white and cool roofing membranes are recognized as a fundamental strategy that dense urban areas can deploy on a large scale, at low cost, to mitigate the urban heat island effect. We are monitoring three generic white membranes within New York City that represent a cross section of the dominant white membrane options for US flat roofs: (1) an ethylene–propylene–diene monomer (EPDM) rubber membrane; (2) a thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO…

  • Remote sensing of the urban heat island effect across biomes in the continental USA

Open Access•Marc L Imhoff, Ping Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Remote Sensing of Environment•2010

  • An Overview of Terra Mission Results Related to the Carbon Cycle

    Open Access•Marc L Imhoff, Robert Wolfe et al.•ARTICLE•Geography Compass•2009•Referencias: 50

Launched in December 1999 as the Earth Observing System's flagship observatory, the Terra Mission (formerly EOS AM-1) carries a suite of five instruments that collect comprehensive global measurements of earth's atmosphere, cryosphere, lands, and oceans. One of the mission's science goals is the collection of data that will enable a better quantitative understanding of earth's carbon cycle through direct observation of atmospheric constituents an…

  • Global patterns in human consumption of net primary production

Open Access•Marc L Imhoff, Lahouari Bounoua et al.•ARTICLE•Nature•2004

  • Biodiversity, Urban Areas, and Agriculture

    Open Access•Taylor H Ricketts, Taylor Ricketts et al.•ARTICLE•Conservation Ecology•2003

"Urbanization and agriculture are two of the most important threats to biodiversity worldwide. The intensities of these land-use phenomena, however, as well as levels of biodiversity itself, differ widely among regions. Thus, there is a need to develop a quick but rigorous method of identifying where high levels of human threats and biodiversity coincide. These areas are clear priorities for biodiversity conservation. In this study, we combine di…
