Populist Attitudes and Radical Politics in Hong Kong
A rise in populism has been observed not only in Europe and America, but also in Chinese society. In this study, populist attitudes in Hong Kong were investigated using telephone survey data. They were measured in terms of a thin-centred ideology, using a multidimensional scale. Our study had two objectives. First, we explored the source of populist attitudes in Hong Kong. We found that a sense of declinism is positively correlated with populist …
Sources of Public Support for the Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill Movement in Hong Kong
Localism has been conventionally regarded as a major determinant of public support for Hong Kong’s Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill Movement in 2019. The empirical evidence of the article did not provide support for such a reading. It found that localist orientation was positively correlated with supportive attitude towards the movement, but not correlated with supportive action for the movement, implying that localism had only limited power t…

Chinese culture and banyan-tree style family businesses
This article argues that culture and physical environment shape the patterns and development of family businesses, and determine their operational logic and controlling mechanism. The geography, religious beliefs, socio-cultural contexts, as well as family ideals, relationships, and inheritance systems of China differ from those of Japan and Britain. Thus, one can expect that the patterns and development paths of Chinese family businesses would a…
Changing Attitudes toward China in Taiwan and Hong Kong in the Xi Jinping Era
This study examines public attitudes toward China in Taiwan and Hong Kong. It finds that before 2019, a majority of people in Taiwan and Hong Kong held positive views about the future development of China. However, many of their positive views suddenly changed during the 2019–2020 period. Those two years witnessed several contingent events underlining political tensions across the Taiwan Strait, and between China and Hong Kong. In addition, this …
Local Versus National Identity in Hong Kong, 1998-2017
In understanding why the proportion of Hong Kong people whose local identity overshadows their national identity has been increasing in the past decade, two perspectives have been considered: the birth cohort and the periodic perspectives. However, because previous studies have been based on cross-sectional surveys, they have failed to examine both cohort and period effects on trends in identification in Hong Kong. A cross-sectional survey approa…
An entrepreneurial migrant family
This research note uses the rise of Aw Boon Haw’s dynastic family businesses across Asia to illustrate Chinese migrant entrepreneurs’ business development and dynamism. Although it is known that the management and operation of Chinese migrant family businesses do have disadvantages, there is substantial evidence that family control and network capital can facilitate their business endeavors. Through the case of the Aw family business, it was foun…
Materialities and corridors
This special issue centers on the role of diasporic communities in the making of 'connected societies' in Asia and beyond through case studies of the Chinese diaspora. The idea of 'connected societies' was inspired by the Belt and Road Initiative 1' (BRI) proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping. Its core spirit is to enhance economic collaboration and cultural exchanges between Asia and Europe through resurrecting the legacies of the ancient Silk …
The impact of experience and perceptions of social mobility on the life satisfaction of young people in Taiwan and Hong Kong
This article, which is based on a comparative telephone survey conducted in 2016, examines the relationship between social mobility experience and the life satisfaction of people aged 18 to 35 in Taiwan and Hong Kong. Using both objective and subjective measures of social mobility, we found that young people’s perceptions of their own social mobility and that of the entire youth population correlated positively with life satisfaction. However, th…
Young people’s sense of fairness and social action
Based on a comparative survey conducted in 2016, this article explores the social actions of young people in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macao from the perspective of social injustice and social frustration as advanced by Gurr (2011). Applying a two-dimensional model of perceptions of social and individual fairness, it is found that young people in Taiwan and Hong Kong have higher levels of frustration and show greater tolerance and acceptance towards…
Role of Family in Entrepreneurial Endeavour and Business in Hong Kong
Through the theoretical lens of the family as a breeding ground for new business, this article argues that the drastic and prolonged decline in fertility affects business creation. Since entrepreneurship is a high-risk endeavour, and during the start-up or expansion period, various kinds of resource support from family are badly needed, the small family is in an unfavourable position. By using qualitative research data obtained in Hong Kong, this…

Postcolonial border crossing
Through a postcolonial lens and based on in-depth interviews with British expatriates who moved to Hong Kong in the first decade after its handover, this paper highlights the contested role of borders in the everyday making and remaking of skilled migration. It draws on Paasi's (2003) definition of boundaries to denote that borders are not merely geographical lines but zones of mixing, blending and reconfiguring historically formed material conne…
The Mystery of Capital
Unlike economic capital, which is visible and easy to calculate, social capital is intangible and difficult to assess. Although both types of capital are crucial in determining social relations and social behaviour, little solid research has been done on the latter. This paper attempts to use the rags-to-riches story of Sir Robert Ho Tung, a first-generation Hong Kong Eurasian entrepreneur who commenced life without traditional social/cultural ca…
Closure and Anti-closure
The Chinese diaspora is often treated as homogeneous while questions related to inter-ethnic conflict are seldom raised. This paper uses Schumpeter's entrepreneurial theory, especially “the creation of a monopoly position” concept, to merge with Weber's idea of closure and anti-closure in cross-examining inter-ethnic competition and tension in Chinese societies. This paper studies the rice trade in Hong Kong—a business that relies heavily on mult…
