Population structure of two black Venezuelan populations studied through their mating structure and other related variables
In order to obtain information about the population structure of two black Venezuelan populations with historical differences both in their origins and development, a variety of variables were utilized, especially on marital structure, including: frequency of surnames, isonymy, population genealogical consanguinity, multiple unions, and marital distances, all of which provided information and isolation, migration, endogamy, consanguinity, and pat…
Coeficient of relationship (RI) within and between four black venezuelan populations
The coefficient of relationship by isonymy Ri was obteined using paternal and maternal surnames of individuals in four black Venezuelan populations. The analysis of eight Ri values obtained from different combinations of surnames within each population and between population in two periods of time (1900–1920 and 1944–1967) show that: 1) Higher values of Ri are those that include combinations of maternal surnames, 2) Ri values of the second period…
Enamel hypoplasia and age at weaning in 19th‐century Florence, Italy
A sample representing a population of the Florence district of middle 19th century was studied to determine the age of occurrence of enamel hypoplasias. The age interval most affected was that between 1.5 and 3.5 years. Historical sources on weaning habits of 19th‐century Italian populations indicate a weaning period between 12 and 18 months. This is in agreement with the data on enamel defects, showing that children of post‐weaning age are more …
Comparisons of Laker's coefficient of relationship in a Venezuelan town in two different periods
A formula for the standard error of Lasker's coefficient of relationship Ri derived from isonymy is proposed, and used to test for differences in relationship in two groups of pairs of spouses from the town of Quibor in Venezuela sampled one century apart. From analysis of the relationship, it was possible to attribute population growth also to immigration. Further, the study of the values of Ri showed that the surnames belonging to the male line…
Surnames in ferrara
The distributions of surnames in populations of small and large towns are almost exactly linearized by a log-log transformation. This indicates probable fit of genetic models to most such distributions, even when the number of surnames is very large. Genetic parameters can then be conveniently calculated from surname distributions. It was found that inbreeding indicators calculated from isonymy are negatively correlated with the size of the towns…
Familial correlations of variables from the craniofacial complex in a Venezuelan isolate of African origin
Familial aggregation for 33 different variables from the craniofacial complex was estimated through intraclass correlation coefficients for four different relationships: parent-offspring paris, sibs, cousins and unrelated pairs. The population chosen for the study was La Sabana, D.F., a Venezuelan isolate of Negroid origin. The general tendency observed among the different correlations was as anticipated: sibs show higher correlations than cousin…
Consanguinity in colonia tovar, a Venezuelan isolate of German origin (1843-1977)
Some variables of the craniofacial complex in a Venezuelan population of negroid ancestry
A total of 226 individuals (101 males and 125 females), from La Sabana, a Venezuelan Negroid isolate, with ages between 8 and 60 years, were studied in order to characterize the population for its craniofacial variables and to study the behavior of these variables in relation to age and sex. The variables studied were grouped in three categories: direct cephalometric variables, which included 6 measurements taken directly on the individuals; indi…
Consanguinity in Spain, 1911–1943
From data on consanguineous marriages in Spain for 1911 to 1943 for the whole country and for four macro regions, the behavior and relationship of consanguinity and demographic variables, such as density, birth rate, death rate, and marriage rate, are demonstrated and discussed. Differences among macro regions for all the variables analyzed and a constant inverse and significant relationship between consanguinity level and density have been found…
Inbreeding and immigration in urban and rural zones of Chile, with an endogamy index
From ecclesiastical and civil data on consanguinity, age at marriage, and immigration in Chile from 186S to 1914, comparisons between urban and rural zones are made. A random mating deviation index is developed, and the values indicate deviation toward endogamy in both zones. These values show an inverse relation to those of the exogamy index developed by Freire‐Maia and Freire‐Maia (1963). Values in the rural zone are double those in the urban z…
Some determinants of mating structure in a rural zone of Chile, 1810–1959
The total consanguineous and nonconsanguineous marriages (n = 7,671) celebrated in Puchuncaví, Chile, from 1810 to 19S9 were analyzed and related to demographic and sociocultural variables. Celibacy, widowhood, and illegitimacy were found to influence the mating structure of the population, producing assortative mating or lowering the probability of marriage
Some dental traits of Diaguitas Indian skulls
Dental characteristics were studied on 60 skulls that belong to a population of Diaguitas Indians of approximately the Tenth Century. Mesiodistal crown diameters of permanent teeth were as follows: central incisors (8.77 mm), lateral incisors (7.23 mm), canines (8.40 mm), first maxillary molars (10.77 mm), second maxillary molars (10.71 mm), first mandibular molars (11.13 mm), and second mandibular molars (10.17 mm). Also determined was the frequ…
Preliminary migration data on a population of Valparaiso, Chile
Consanguinity in the Province of Valparaiso, Chile, 1917–1966
Genetic structure of a population of Valparaiso. II. Distribution of two dental traits with anthropological importance
The frequency of Carabelli's cusp (27.24%) and shovel‐shaped incisors (45.72%) were determined in a sample of students from the city of Valparaíso. These values are intermediate between those found in Caucasian and Mongolian populations. A sexual dimorphism was observed for shovel‐shaped incisors; the relation of this trait to a socio‐economic index and occlusal type is indicated. Carabelli's cusp is found to vary with the number of foreign ances…
