  • Diagnosis of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder with the MMPI

    Open Access•Richard D Wetzel, Paula J Clayton et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2000

Clinic patients with diagnoses of either major depression or somatization disorder were given the MMPI. Women with somatization disorder had high scores on Keane's MMPI scale (PK) for posttraumatic stress disorder. Following the procedure for the MMPI-2 (46 of the 49 PK items and MMPI-2 norms), 59% of the women with somatization disorder and 21% of the women with major depression would have T scores > or = 65 on the MMPI-2 scale although none of …

  • Briquetʼs syndrome (hysteria) is both a somatoform and a “psychoform” illness

    Richard D Wetzel, Samuel B Guzé et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1994

We describe the results of a follow-up study on patients with hysteria using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) to evaluate the multiple complaints of these patients. MMPIs were obtained from 29 women with primary affective disorder and 37 women with Briquet's syndrome as part of a follow-up study of the St. Louis clinic 500. Patients with Briquet's syndrome were significantly less consistent and logical in answering MMPIs and…

  • Alcoholics Who See a Psychiatrist Compared with Those Who Do Not

Robert A Woodruff, Samuel B Guzé et al.•ARTICLE•Quarterly Journal of Studies on…•1973

Patients who had sought treatment for alcoholism at a psychiatric clinic were similar to alcoholic relatives who had not sought treatment, except that depressive symptoms were more evident in the treated alcoholics. The implications with regard to the recognition of alcoholism as an illness by the general public are discussed

  • Consistency of Drinking History and Diagnosis of Alcoholism

Samuel B Guzé, Donald W Goodwin•ARTICLE•Quarterly Journal of Studies on…•1972

A drinking-history questionnaire was completed by 176 male felons and repeated 8 to 9 years later. The more extensive the original drinking problem, the more likely the subject was to be consistent in his answers at follow up, suggesting that inconsistency in 26% was largely a manifestation of mild or borderline alcoholism

  • Felons Who Drink; An 8-Year Follow-Up

Donald W Goodwin, J Bruce Crane et al.•ARTICLE•Quarterly Journal of Studies on…•1971

A majority of convicted felons were diagnosed as alcoholics in prison and at follow-up 8 years later, but 38 of 93 unequivocal alcoholics were in remission, all but 2 without psychiatric treatment. Differences in the life histories and personality and familial factors between the alcoholics and nonalcoholics and between the remitted and nonremitted alcoholics are detailed

  • Establishment of Diagnostic Validity in Psychiatric Illness

Eli Robins, Samuel B Guzé•ARTICLE•American Journal of Psychiatry•1970

A method for achieving diagnostic validity in psychiatric illness is described, consisting of five phases: clinical description, laboratory study, exclusion of other disorders, follow-up study, and family study. The method was applied in this paper to patients with the diagnosis of schizophrenia, and it was shown by follow-up and family studies that poor prognosis cases can be validly separated clinically from good prognosis cases. The authors co…

  • Theory and Observation in Psychiatric Research

    Samuel B Guzé•ARTICLE•Human Organization•1957

As I began to think about and plan this paper, I became quite concerned over the realization which developed that nearly all I would have to say would be critical. Such a role for myself I found unpleasant and I felt sorry I had accepted Dr. Winokur's invitation. It's one thing to express critical ideas in an informal discussion of give and take among colleagues and another to formalize it in a prepared paper1 and reveal to everyone a jaundiced e…
