Diversity of Chemsex Experiences among Men Who Have Sex with Men
The sociodynamics of chemsex
This study examined the intricate phenomenon of chemsex among men who have sex with men (MSM) in France, by focusing on the perspectives of different stakeholders, namely people with chemsex experience, clinicians, and community health workers . Employing a sociodynamic approach, lexical analysis was used to identify and interpret key themes in participants’ discourses on chemsex, with a view to revealing its multifaceted nature. Our findings hig…
Trajectories of Chemsex Engagement Across Time Among PrEP-Using Men Who Have Sex with Men
Objectives To identify trajectories of chemsex engagement and their evolution across time among men who have sex with men (MSM) and the associated factors. Methods Among 2518 PrEP-using MSM in the French ANRS- Prévenir cohort, a group-based trajectory model was used to identify trajectories of chemsex engagement. A multivariable model was then used to estimate time-constant factors associated with trajectory membership, and time-varying factors as…
The Optimus International Consensus Guidance for Monitoring User-Reported Outcomes of Opioid Maintenance Treatment
Opioid use disorder is a major cause of drug-related harm and mortality. These can be reduced by expanded access to evidence-based and highly effective opioid agonist maintenance treatment or therapy (OMT). There is a lack of consensus on how to assess opioid use disorder treatment outcomes, and key health outcomes are often omitted. We report the results of a Delphi study to produce service user- and public health–centred international consensus…

A hand-washing community-based educational intervention to reduce abscess incidence among people who inject drugs
NCT06131788, received on 2 January 2024
Cost-effectiveness of drug consumption rooms in France
Our findings show that DCRs are highly effective and efficient to prevent harms in PWID in France, and advocate extending this intervention to other cities by adding drug consumption spaces inside existing harm reduction centers
“The Slums Have To Be Shown”
EPOSIM is a community-based participatory research study which used the Photovoice method with people who inject drugs (PWID) ahead of a possible opening of a drug consumption room (DCR) in Marseille, France. It aimed to identify the strategies used by PWID when injecting, and the risks they take when they have no safe private space to inject in the area they live in. A total of 7 PWID participated in the full study process. The 189 photographs t…
Exclusive Therapeutic Use of Cannabis in a Large Sample of Daily Cannabis Users in France
Many cannabis users report therapeutic benefits from cannabis consumption, even when not recommended by a physician. To date, few data on therapeutic users of cannabis in France are available. Using a cross-sectional survey held in 2020, we collected sociodemographic, health and substance use data from 4150 daily cannabis users in France. We used multivariable logistic regression to assess factors associated with exclusive therapeutic use of cann…
Impact of drug consumption rooms on non-fatal overdoses, abscesses and emergency department visits in people who inject drugs in France
BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of drug consumption rooms (DCRs) for people who inject drugs (PWID) has been demonstrated for HIV and hepatitis C virus risk practices, and access to care for substance use disorders. However, data on other health-related complications are scarce. Using data from the French COSINUS cohort, we investigated the impact of DCR exposure on non-fatal overdoses, abscesses and emergency department (ED) visits, all in the pre…
Implementation and evaluation of an educational intervention for safer injection in people who inject drugs in Europe
Correlates of Self-Reported Cotton Fever Experience among People Who Inject Opioids
Background: Cotton fever is a febrile syndrome occurring after intravenous drug injection. Although its clinical presentation is well described in the literature, data regarding prevention is lacking. We aimed to assess proportion and correlates of cotton fever experience among people who inject opioids. Methods: We performed a cross-sectional study using data from the community-based survey PrebupIV conducted in France in 2015 among 557 people w…

Smoking habits in French farmers
Our results confirm that the prevalence of ever-smokers is lower in farmers than in non-farmers. Nevertheless, our data show that active smoking prevalence is similar in farmers and in non-farmers. This suggests that farmers, just like non-farmers, should be targeted by primary prevention campaigns against smoking

Medication and the patient–doctor relationship
BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia is characterized by a diffuse and predominantly axial and chronic pain, for which there is no explicit rationale for treatment options. OBJECTIVE: This qualitative study aims to understand the medication experience of patients with fibromyalgia and their relationship with the doctors derived from treatment negotiation. DESIGN: A qualitative approach was used, based on interviews with patients. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Se…
Innovative community‐based educational face‐to‐face intervention to reduce HIV, hepatitis C virus and other blood‐borne infectious risks in difficult‐to‐reach people who inject drugs
AIMS: To study the effectiveness of an educational intervention on risks associated with drug injection, comparing primary [unsafe HIV-hepatitis C virus (HCV) practices] and secondary (local complications at injecting site) end-points in harm reduction (HR) programmes offering this intervention versus HR programmes not offering it. DESIGN: This non-random clustered intervention study was conducted in nine intervention groups (programmes offering …

Methadone induction in primary care (ANRS-Methaville)
The ANRS-Methaville study is the first in France to use an interventional trial to improve access to OMT for drug users. Once the non-inferiority results become available, the Ministry of Health and agency for the safety of health products may change the the New Drug Application (NDA) of methadone and make methadone induction by trained primary care physicians possible. The trial is registered with the French Agency of Pharmaceutical Products (AFS…
Correlates of poor perceived health among individuals living with HIV and HBV chronic infections
Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection affects up to 14% of people living with HIV and AIDS (PLWHA) and is associated with a higher risk of non-AIDS death. While great advances have been made in the therapeutic management of co-infection with HIV and HBV, nothing is known about perceived health in people living with HIV and HBV. This study aimed at characterizing individuals with poor perceived overall health among 308 HIV-HBV co-infected indi…
Determinants of benzodiazepine use in a representative population of HIV-infected individuals
HIV infection may result in stressful situations such as disclosure to others and could be a mediator between seropositivity status and psychiatric illness, depression, or anxiety. Several results have shown that anxiolytic use (mainly benzodiazepines [BDZ]) is highly prevalent in HIV-infected individuals, but few studies have highlighted to what extent this use could be associated with HIV disclosure. A national cross-sectional survey representa…
Harmful alcohol consumption and patterns of substance use in HIV-infected patients receiving antiretrovirals (ANRS-EN12-Vespa Study)
Alcohol abuse affects secondary prevention and disease progression in HIV-infected patients, and adherence and response to treatment in those chronically treated. The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of harmful alcohol consumption (HAC) using various indicators and identify which groups of patients may require specific targeted interventions for HAC risk reduction. A cross-sectional survey, based on a random sample represent…
