  • Utilising integrated bio-behavioural surveillance (IBBS) to investigate declining hepatitis C antibody prevalence among people who inject drugs in the Australian Needle and Syringe Program Survey

Open Access•Lisa Maher, Handan Wand et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Drug…•2025

The temporal decline in HCV Ab prevalence appears related to reduced sensitivity of DBS HCV Ab detection with viral clearance following treatment. Since 2016, HCV treatment uptake has increased markedly including among people who inject drugs. In this context, continuing to monitor HCV Ab prevalence by DBS testing is problematic, with a shift to surveillance of active infection the most relevant to guide policy and practice in this setting

  • Acceptability of self-collected vaginal swabs and point-of-care testing for sexually transmitted and genital infections among pregnant women in Papua New Guinea

Open Access•Lisa Vallely, Priscilla Poga et al.•ARTICLE•Global Public Health•2024

The self-collection of vaginal swabs and point-of-care testing and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is reported from several low-and middle-income countries. However, the reporting on women's experiences of self-collection and same-day testing and treatment of STIs is less well described. In this paper, we present the acceptability of self-collected vaginal swabs and point-of-care testing and treatment among pregnant women enro…

Open Access•Reshmi Dassaye, Handan Wand et al.•ARTICLE•SAHARA-J Journal of Social…•2023

South Africa is faced with a high HIV and STI prevalence and incidence, respectively, with pockets of high burden areas driving these diseases. Localised monitoring of the HIV epidemic and STI endemic would enable more effective targeted prevention strategies. We assessed spatial variations in curable STI incidence among a cohort of women enrolled in HIV prevention clinical trials between 2002 and 2012. STI incidence rates from 7557 South African…

  • Mental health service contact following release from prison or hospital discharge in those with psychosis

Open Access•Nabila Chowdhury, Nabila Z Chowdhury et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

This study suggests that prior offending or a previous prison episode represents a barrier to mental health service contact in the community for those with a FDP. Effective rehabilitation planning while exiting prison and discharge planning from hospital are essential to the successful reintegration of these individuals with a FDP

  • Surveillance of Domestic Violence Using Text Mining Outputs From Australian Police Records

Open Access•George Karystianis, Armita Adily et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

In Australia, domestic violence reports are mostly based on data from the police, courts, hospitals, and ad hoc surveys. However, gaps exist in reporting information such as victim injuries, mental health status and abuse types. The police record details of domestic violence events as structured information (e.g., gender, postcode, ethnicity), but also in text narratives describing other details such as injuries, substance use, and mental health …

  • Measuring school level attributable risk to support school-based HPV vaccination programs

    Open Access•Cassandra Vujovich‐Dunn, C Vujovich-Dunn et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

This analysis suggests that initiatives to support schools that are smaller, with a higher proportion of Indigenous adolescents and lower attendance rates may contribute most to reducing the variation of HPV vaccination uptake observed at a school-level in these jurisdictions. Estimating population-level coverage at the school-level is useful to guide policy and prioritise resourcing to support school-based vaccination programs
