  • Professional talk on cybervetting

    Open Access•Christel Backman, Anna Hedenus•ARTICLE•Acta Sociologica•2023•Referencias: 37

Even though recruiters' practise of searching for information online during recruitment and selection has been a contested practise, owing to the risk of discrimination and privacy intrusions as well as poor evidence for its ability to predict work performance, it is used in recruitment. In this article, our aim is to understand how 'professional talk' is used as a discursive resource to legitimize contested practises such as the practise of cybe…

  • Digital Transformations of Traditional Work in the Nordic Countries

Open Access•Bertil Rolandsson, Tuomo Alasoini et al.•BOOK•Digital Transformations of…•2020

This report aim to go behind narratives of digitalization as a uniform force of disruption, job destruction and revolutionary change at work, and convey a nuanced picture of digitalization played out at ordinary Nordic workplaces in traditional sectors of work. • Acting on a hunch

    Anna Hedenus, Christel Backman•ARTICLE•Emotions and Society•2020•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 7

The process of recruiting new employees involves the risk of hiring the ‘wrong’ person. Systematic and extensive information gathering is therefore used to support objective and rational decisions. Today, the use of cybervetting is part of the recruitment process, but prior research shows that emotions, contrary to the ideals of ‘objectivity’, are essential for sorting and selection decisions. Based on interviews with 37 Swedish recruiters, this …

  • Online privacy in job recruitment processes? Boundary work among cybervetting recruiters

    Open Access•Christel Backman, Anna Hedenus•ARTICLE•New Technology Work and Employment•2019•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 30

This article addresses various ways that cybervetting recruiters (re)construct boundaries around the public–private division. Based on interviews with 37 recruiters in Sweden, we show how the practice of cybervetting is legitimised by the recruiters’ descriptions and accounts in relation to various notions of privacy and norms of information flow. We present this as a boundary work aided by especially two ways of framing information: the repertoi…

  • Explaining the Data Double

    Open Access•Anna Hedenus, Christel Backman•ARTICLE•Surveillance & Society•2017•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 5

The practice of cybervetting—i.e., online background checks of a jobseeker’s ‘data double’—is considered to be a valuable tool in the recruitment process by an increasing amount of employers. As a consequence, jobseekers lose some control over what aspects of their past, personal interests or private life they will share with the employer. Moreover, jobseekers are expected to confess, explain and contextualize unfavorable information about them i…

  • Pennies from heaven? Conceptions and earmarking of lottery prize money

    Open Access•Anna Hedenus•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology•2014•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 22

The source of money has been shown to be important for how money is spent. In addition, sudden wealth is often associated with social and psychological risks. This article investigates if conceptions of lottery prize money - as a special kind of money - imply restrictions on how it can be spent. Analysis of interviews with lottery winners shows that interviewees use earmarking of the prize money as a strategy for avoiding the pitfalls associated …

  • Who wants to work less? Significance of socio-economic status and work conditions for work commitment among Swedish lottery winners

    Open Access•Anna Hedenus•ARTICLE•Acta Sociologica•2012•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 22

Manual workers and workers who experience their jobs as 'bad' are presumed to have a more instrumental attitude toward work than those with high job satisfaction. This study examines whether demonstrated differences in Swedish lottery winners' work patterns - where blue-collar winners are more apt than white-collar winners to scale back their time spent on paid work - can be explained by a difference in work conditions for these socio-economic gr…

  • Finding Prosperity as a Lottery Winner

    Open Access•Anna Hedenus•ARTICLE•Sociology•2011•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 14

The narrative about the squandering lottery winner ending up alone and in debt has been shown to affect other lottery winners' thinking about how to manage their money. Based on a narrative analysis of interviews with 14 Swedish lottery winners, this article considers the ways in which lottery winners present themselves and their post-winning life in counter-position to this story about the squandering winner. By spending their prize money respon…

    Anna Hedenus•ARTICLE•World Leisure & Recreation•2009•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 2

The article considers the effects of gender, parenthood, form of living arrangement, and work-family balance on the working patterns of 420 Swedish lottery winners. The impact of reduced working hours and increased leave periods on their work-life balance is discussed. The analysis shows that it is the younger winners living alone who take …
