  • Improving Nutrition in the First 1000 Days in the United States

Heather C Hamner, Jennifer Nelson et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2022•Referencias: 42

The first 1000 days begins with pregnancy and ends at the child’s second birthday. Nutrition throughout the life course, and especially during the first 1000 days, supports maternal health and optimal growth and development for children. We give a high-level summary of the state of nutrition in the first 1000 days in the United States. We provide examples where continued efforts are needed. We then discuss select opportunities to strengthen feder…

  • The Validity and Reliability of Maternal Recall of Breastfeeding Practice

Ruowei Li, Kelley S Scanlon et al.•ARTICLE•Nutrition Reviews•2005

In large epidemiologic studies, information on breastfeeding practice is often collected from maternal recall through interviews, but there is concern about the accuracy of the data, especially when mothers are asked to recall their practices from many years earlier. This review examines the validity and reliability of maternal recall of breastfeeding history using 11 studies published between 1966 and 2003 in English with a sample of 10 or more.…

  • Parent‐Child Feeding Strategies and Their Relationships to Child Eating and Weight Status

    Open Access•Myles S Faith, Kelley S Scanlon et al.•ARTICLE•Obesity Research•2004

Parental feeding styles may promote overeating or overweight in children. A comprehensive literature review was undertaken to summarize the associations between parental feeding styles and child eating and weight status. Twenty‐two studies were identified. We systematically coded study attributes and outcomes and tested for patterns of association. Nineteen studies (86%) reported at least one significant association between parental feeding style…

  • An outbreak of hypervitaminosis D associated with the overfortification of milk from a home-delivery dairy

Susan Blank, Kelley S Scanlon et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1995•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 14

OBJECTIVES. The purpose of the study was to identify cases of hypervitaminosis D caused by the inadvertent overfortification of milk from a home-delivery dairy and to identify risk factors for this illness. METHODS. Hospital discharge, laboratory, and state health department data were used to define, identify, and describe cases of hypervitaminosis D diagnosed in the exposed communities between January 1, 1985, and June 30, 1991. To identify dise…

  • Subclinical health effects in a population exposed to excess vitamin D in milk

Kelley S Scanlon, Susan Blank et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1995•Referencias: 12

To evaluate subclinical health effects of excess vitamin D, a cross-sectional study was conducted of persons consuming milk from a dairy that had overfortified milk for at least 4 years. Milk consumption, sunlight exposure, medical symptoms, serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D), serum and urinary calcium, and indicators of renal function were measured. Increased milk consumption was associated with increased serum 25(OH)D and urinary calcium. Howe…

  • Reporting efficiency during a measles outbreak in New York City, 1991

    Shametrice Davis, S F Davis et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1993•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 12

OBJECTIVES. During an epidemic of measles among preschool children in New York City, an investigation was conducted in 12 city hospitals to estimate reporting efficiency of measles to the New York City Department of Health. Statistics on reported cases demonstrate clearly that AIDS is disproportionately prevalent among U.S. Latinos. To help clarify the meaning of this information, this article situates current epidemiological data within the sociocultural and socioeconomic contexts of Latinos living in the U.S. The purpose of this paper is to develop a fuller understanding of the Latino AIDS crisis by reviewing existing literature and new research findings on: (1) d…
