  • Diaphragmatic hernia associated with strangulation of the small bowel in an Atacamena mummy

Open Access•Juan Munizaga, Marvin J Allison et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1978•Citada por: 1

This is the second case of a diaphragmatic herniafrom 200 autopsies of mummies of Atacamena Indians found in northern Chile. This case is noted in an individual who died in the third century A.D. as a result of strangulation of two loops of the jejunum that entered the thoracic cavity. The herniation was probably congenital in nature

  • Cholelithiasis and cholecystitis in pre‐Columbian Chileans

    Open Access•Juan Munizaga, Marvin J Allison et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1978•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 5

Two cases of gallbladder disease found in Chilean mummies are presented. The cholesterol gallstones in these cases produced in one individual a localized peritonitis and in the other a probable duct obstruction. No cases of this disease have been seen in Peruvian mummies while in Chile it seems quite common, suggesting some environmental factor in the etiology

  • ABO blood groups in Chilean and Peruvian mummies. II. Results of agglutination‐inhibition technique

    Open Access•Marvin J Allison, Ali A Hossaini et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1978•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 7

ABO blood groups of Peruvian and Chilean mummies were determined with the agglutination‐inhibition method. In Peru all ABO blood groups were found in the period from 3000 B.C. to 1400 A.D.; from this period to 1650 only A and O were seen. In Chile no B or AB was noted either in pre‐Columbian or Colonial mummies. This confirms the archeological concept that the Chilean Indian was culturally as well as genetically different from the Peruvian Indian…

  • Intentional cranial deformation in the preColumbian populations of ecuador

    Open Access•Juan Munizaga, Juan R Munizaga•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1976•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 5

Using 151 crania, 8 Preceramic, 86 Formative, 29 Regional Developmental, 28 Integration Period and some isolated skulls from Ecuador I can clarify some origins and diffusion of American cranial deformation. To Imbelloni's classification of Tabular erecta, Tabular obliqua, and Annular I add a new type, Cuneiform, marked by flattening of the entire occiput (not just the upper, membraneous‐derived bone) without evidence of counter pressure in front.…

  • ABO blood groups in Peruvian mummies. I. An evaluation of techniques

    Open Access•Marvin J Allison, Ali A Hossaini et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1976•Citada por: 12•Referencias: 9

Blood groups of Peruvian mummies of known origin were determined by three different methods: agglutination‐inhibition, induction of antibody production and mixed cell agglutination. The three techniques gave identical results, but the last two were useful in establishing the presence of H (O) antigen, while the first technique would not. The results indicate the presence of A, B, AB and O blood groups in America prior to known European contact. T…
