if a cabin of hungry [Iroquois] meets another whose provisions are not entirely exhausted, the latter share with the newcomers the little which remains to them without waiting to be asked, although they expose themselves thereby to the same danger of perishing as those whom they help at their own expense so humanely and with such greatness of soul

There is a paradox in Engels’ well-known theory of state formation contained in The Origin of the Family Private Property and the State . The state in Engels’ view represented a triumph of a small elite of non-producers over the vast majority, and a world-historical defeat for the common people. Yet the Athenian state, Engels’ prime example, does not conform to the pattern: it becomes more “democratic” as the state evolves rather than less. The p…

    Richard B Lee•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Anthropology•2018•Citada por: 14•Referencias: 76

One of the most persistent debates in anthropology and related disciplines has been over the relative weight of aggression and competition versus nonaggression and cooperation as drivers of human behavioral evolution. The literature on hunting and gathering societies-past and present-has played a prominent role in these debates. This review compares recent literature from both sides of the argument and evaluates how accurately various authors use…

Purpose – The question of violence in hunter-gatherer society has animated philosophical debates since at least the seventeenth century. Steven Pinker has sought to affirm that civilization, is superior to the state of humanity during its long history of hunting and gathering. The purpose of this paper is to draw upon a series of recent studies that assert a baseline of primordial violence by hunters and gatherers. In challenging this position th…

    Open Access•Richard B Lee•ARTICLE•American Anthropologist•1992•Citada por: 64•Referencias: 80

In the complex history of hunter-gatherer studies, several overlapping and at times antagonistic discourses can be discerned. However, one critique has emerged that would render all hunter-gatherer discourses irrelevant and do away with the concept altogether. The paper explores the poststructuralist roots of this "revisionism" and then argues why the concept of hunter-gatherer continues to be politically relevant and empirically valid. However, …

Vernon Reynolds, Richard B Lee et al.•ARTICLE•Man•1969

This book, arising from a symposium entitled "Man the Hunter," held at the University of Chicago in April 1966, explores the role of hunting in human evolution. It challenges the then-dominant view of early humans as primarily scavengers, arguing instead that big-game hunting played a crucial role in shaping human social organization, intelligence, and technology. The volume presents ethnographic studies of contemporary hunter-gatherer societies,…
