Gender differences in grit and programming experience across course levels and their relationship to undergraduate students’ intention to complete a computer science degree
Background and Context Despite the growing demand for computing professionals, high dropout rates and pronounced gender disparities persist in CS programs. While factors such as grit and programming experience influence student retention and success and may differ by gender, how these differences shape retention remains unclear. Objective This paper employs the Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) to study how gender differences in grit and progr…
An analysis of Nepal’s Draft Mental Health Acts 2006–2017
This qualitative study maps the process of drafting and consulting on Nepal’s mental health legislation from 2006 to 2017. A total of 14 people were interviewed and interviews were analysed thematically. These themes were subsequently interpreted in light of Shiffman and Smith’s policy analysis framework, as the process was found to be at the agenda-setting stage. Two groups of actors were identified with different views on appropriate policy con…
A qualitative study exploring perspectives and practices of district TB officers and frontline TB workers implementing public-private mix for TB control in India
The bottom-up perspective of policy implementation process recognizes that policy implementers play a vital role, are capable of re-shaping policy during implementation, and that studying their behaviour is important. Public Private Mix (PPM) has been a core component of the Revised National TB Control Programme in India. The programme encourages District TB Officers and Frontline TB Workers to actively involve NGOs and Private Practitioners to i…
The incidence of construction site injuries to women in Delhi
This study is the first to estimate the incidence of injuries to female construction site workers in India. The overall injury rate of female construction workers was over half as great as the rate of males. This implies that female construction workers face a not insignificant risk. Hence, safety measures (e.g., personal protective equipment) that are appropriate and culturally acceptable to Indian women are needed
Global health is political; can it also be compassionate
We need a renewed vision for global health as well as a renewed vision of ourselves in it. If, as researchers and practitioners, we spend too much time protecting our careers and our funding sources at any costs, and too little time with the people we aim to help, we will struggle to both recognise their suffering as suffering and accept the extent to which we can be profoundly mistaken in what these people need. To improve health for all, we nee…
Doktor Kot, Doktor Sla - book doctors, plant doctors and the segmentation of the medical market place in Meghalaya, northeast India
Despite decades of research on India's plural health care market, the practices of many local health traditions outside the allopathic and codified traditions are under-studied. Drawing on interview and observational data, this paper explores the space in which indigenous traditional Khasi healers in Meghalaya state, northeast India, practice. Khasi indigenous healers describe themselves as doktor sla , plant doctors, to distinguish themselves fr…
Setting the agenda for nurse leadership in India
The study emphasises that the nursing empowerment needs institutional reforms to facilitate nurse's distributed leadership across the health system and to enable their collective advocacy that questions the status quo and the structures that uphold it
Understanding the complex relationships among actors involved in the implementation of public-private mix (PPM) for TB control in India, using social theory
This paper demonstrates that applying social theory can enable a better understanding of the complex relationship across public, private and NGO sectors. A closer understanding of these processes is a prerequisite for bridging the gap between field-level practices and central policy intentions, facilitating a move towards more effective partnership strategies for strengthening local health systems. The study contributes to our understanding of im…
Who is answerable to whom? Exploring the complex relationship between researchers, community and Community Advisory Board (CAB) members in two research studies in Zambia
This paper explores the accountability relationships that arise between researchers, the community and community representative structures known as Community Advisory Boards (CABs). It draws on ethnographic and case study research that documented the history, recruitment, composition and representativeness of two CABs and their relationships with researchers and communities, carried out in two studies in Zambia between 2010 and 2014. The findings…
The Public Dance Halls Act, 1935
Historical scholarship has interpreted the Public Dance Halls Act, 1935 in a relatively uniform manner. Most works on the subject have emphasised the expanding influence of Catholic church authorities over dancing following the enactment of the legislation, as well as the increasing restrictions placed on the freedom of dancers. The act has been viewed as one element in a sequence of pieces of legislation passed by successive Free State governmen…
Getting the water-carrier to light the lamps
The government of India has, over the past decade, implemented the "integration" of traditional, complementary and alternative medical (TCAM) practitioners, specifically practitioners of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Sowa-rigpa, and Homoeopathy (collectively known by the acronym AYUSH), in government health services. A range of operational and ethical challenges has manifested during this process of large health system reform. We…
The Vertical Mosaic
Although this is a sociological study in which evidence in related to social theory, the author has tried to avoid technical terms, and this, together with the particular relevance at the present time of a discussion of the nature of Canadian society, will make this book interesting tolaymen as well as specialists
Cultural consonance, constructions of science and co-existence
This review examined the determinants, patterns and imports of official recognition, and incorporation of different traditional, complementary and alternative systems of medicine (TCAM) in the public health establishment of low- and middle-income countries, with a particular focus on India. Public health systems in most countries have tended to establish health facilities centred on allopathy, and then to recognize or derecognize different TCAM b…
Engaging for-profit providers in TB control
There has been a huge expansion in the private health-care sector over the past two decades, particularly in South Asia, resulting in over 80% of patients seeking care from private health providers. Despite concerns about the quality and equity of private sector service provision, most government public health bodies recognize that the private sector reaches individuals that public institutions cannot cater to, thereby being important in moving c…

Application of standard treatment guidelines in rural community health centres, Timor-Leste
OBJECTIVE: To analyse nurses' and midwives' knowledge of and attitudes towards standard treatment guidelines (STGs), which were developed to help their practices at rural community health centres (CHCs) in Timor-Leste. METHODS: Fifty-five nurses and midwives were individually interviewed. Data were analysed qualitatively using the Framework approach. RESULTS: Overall, the standard treatments for acute respiratory tract infections, malaria and dia…
Disempowered doctors? A relational view of public health policy implementation in urban India
This article analyses the nature of power relationships between urban hospital practitioners and other groups of actors involved in the implementation of public health policies in India, and the effects of enacting different strategies to strengthen implementation, in the context of these balances of power. It is based on an empirical research study conducted over 18 months in five Indian cities involving 61 in-depth interviews with medical pract…
Examining sex differentials in the uptake and process of HIV testing in three high prevalence districts of India
Sex differentials in the uptake of HIV testing have been reported in a range of settings, however, men's and women's testing patterns are not consistent across these settings, suggesting the need to set sex differentials against gender norms in patient testing behaviour and provider practices. A community-based, cross-sectional survey among 347 people living with HIV in three HIV high prevalence districts of India examined reasons for undergoing …
What 'outliers' tell us about missed opportunities for tuberculosis control
A proxy for those who fail to reach the programme, these case profiles highlight unique vulnerabilities that need innovative approaches by the RNTCP. The focus on 'outliers' provides a less resource- and time-intensive alternative to community-based studies for understanding the barriers to reaching public health programmes
Discursive gaps in the implementation of public health policy guidelines in India
Assessing the incremental effects of combining economic and health interventions
OBJECTIVE: To explore whether adding a gender and HIV training programme to microfinance initiatives can lead to health and social benefits beyond those achieved by microfinance alone. METHODS: Cross-sectional data were derived from three randomly selected matched clusters in rural South Africa: (i) four villages with 2-year exposure to the Intervention with Microfinance for AIDS and Gender Equity (IMAGE), a combined microfinance-health training …
The Value of Producing Food, Energy, and Ecosystem Services within an Agro-Ecosystem
Agricultural ecosystems produce food, fiber, and non-marketed ecosystem services (ES). Agriculture also typically involves high negative external costs associated with, for example, fossil fuel use. We estimated, via field-scale ecological monitoring and economic value-transfer methods, the market and nonmarket ES value of a combined food and energy (CFE) agro-ecosystem that simultaneously produces food, fodder, and bioenergy. Such novel CFE agro…

Epidemiological Reflections of the Contribution of Anthropology to Public Health Policy and Practice
Academic disciplines like anthropology and epidemiology provide a niche for researchers to speak the same language, and to interrogate the assumptions that they use to investigate problems. How anthropological and epidemiological methods communicate and relate to each other affects the way public health policy is created but the philosophical underpinnings of each discipline makes this difficult. Anthropology is reflective, subjective and investi…

Canadian Character in the Twentieth Century
Canadian character is difficult to analyze. There are two main cultural groups, French and English, who could well be considered as two separate "nations." As other Euro pean ethnic groups have come into Canada, they have been en couraged to retain their sense of identity with their country of origin. This strong emphasis on ethnic pluralism has reduced the urge to build a new Canadian nation. Canada's unstable population growth and high rates of…

Concentration of Economic Power and the Economic Elite in Canada
Membership in an élite group implies a role by virtue of which the individual has the power to make effective decisions and to co-ordinate activity in a particular sector of the social structure. In simpler types of social structure, or the “folk” society, decision-making roles tend to be fused with other roles such as headship of kinship units or magical and religious functions. In industrial types of social structure with a great differentiatio…
