Family environmental unpredictability and adolescent physiological and psychological health

Characterising symptom clusters
OBJECTIVE: Somatic symptoms (SS) pose public health burdens, but it remains unclear whether SS should be defined by overall severity or specific symptoms. Therefore, we aimed to identify SS profiles and explore how psychosocial predictors shape these profiles based on the biopsychosocial model. METHODS AND MEASURES: = 598) completed three waves of survey on SS and psychosocial predictors. We used cluster analysis to identify SS profiles, classifi…
Linking childhood adversity and daily hassles to adolescent sleep behaviors
This study sought to examine whether diurnal cortisol served as an intermediary pathway linking childhood adversity and daily hassles to adolescent sleep behaviors (i.e., duration and quality). Data were drawn from 255 Chinese adolescents (32.2% female; Mage = 11.678 years, SD = 0.741, range = 10-14 years). Adolescents filled out a survey on demographics and childhood adversity at T1. One year later (T2), they completed 7-day reports on daily has…

Longitudinal trajectories of perceived stress during college transition
The transition to college triggers significant stress that adversely affects student outcomes. Perceived stress during this period critically influences psychological well-being and physical health. However, longitudinal stress trajectories and their underlying protective factors remain poorly understood. A four-wave longitudinal design tracked 2326 Chinese first-year college students (Mage= 18.16, SD = 0.57; 55.6% female) over two years. Validat…

Positive character and psychological well‐being
INTRODUCTION: Positive character is an integral component of positive youth development that relates to psychological well-being among adolescents, yet the literature has largely overlooked its within-group variation. This study examined the latent profiles of positive character and explored their variation in psychological well-being across four adolescent groups (i.e., migrant, left-behind, rural local, and urban local adolescents) within each …
Unlocking emotional well-being
Although there is a growing body of research on the effects of a stress mindset on health and well-being, knowledge of the effectiveness of stress mindset interventions in real-world situations is limited and primarily supported by evidence from Western cultural contexts. We examined the effects of a stress mindset intervention with a metacognitive approach on emotional well-being (negative affect, positive affect, anxious affect, and life satisf…

Social determinants of health and developmental profiles among diverse Chinese youth
Comprising a substantial proportion of the global youth population, Chinese youth play critical roles in Chinese and global societies. Yet extensive research on the development of Chinese youth has mainly taken a deficit approach. A comprehensive understanding of their holistic developmental profiles and their profiles' associations with social determinants of health (SDOHs) is needed. This person-centered study collected data from a nationally r…

Associations between trait and state perceived stress and daily moods
Drastically disrupting daily routines, the global pandemic of COVID-19 has posed critical mental health threats to adolescents and young adults worldwide. Many of the extant empirical findings, however, have focused on individuals' psychological adjustment during the initial phase of the pandemic. It is less clear how COVID-19 stressful experiences impact young people's daily lives in the post-pandemic "new normal." Drawing on 7-day diary reports…

Self-care behaviors, drinking, and smoking to cope with psychological distress during Covid-19 among Chinese college students
OBJECTIVE: College students are vulnerable to psychological distress during COVID-19 due to pandemic-related stressors. In response to psychological distress, college students engage in various coping behaviors, such as self-care behaviors and substance use. The transactional model of stress and coping depicts a cognitive appraisal process in the stress-coping association. Psychological resilience is an essential factor for the cognitive appraisa…
Peer victimization trajectories and their relationships with depressive symptoms and externalizing problems

Social Stigma and Mental Health among Rural-to-Urban Migrants in China
There are over 100 million individuals in China who have migrated from rural villages to urban areas for jobs or better lives without permanent urban residency (i.e., "rural-to-urban migrants"). Our preliminary data from ongoing research among rural-to-urban migrants in China suggest that the migrant population is strongly stigmatized. Moreover, it appears that substantial numbers of these migrants experience mental health symptoms (e.g., depress…
HIV-related knowledge, stigma, and willingness to disclose
Increasing HIV knowledge is a focus of many HIV education and prevention efforts. While the bivariate relationship of HIV serostatus disclosure with HIV-related knowledge and stigma has been reported in the literature, little is known about the mediation effect of stigma on the relationship of HIV knowledge with HIV serostatus disclosure. Data from 4,208 rural-to-urban migrants in China were analyzed to explore this issue. Overall, 70% of respond…
