Open Access•Jesper Willaing Zeuthen, Jesper Zeuthen•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary Asia•2026

Institutions, Culture and the Chinese City focuses on how what the authors call institutions and culture have shaped the Chinese city. By “institutions,” the authors mean the political system, nota

  • Red, Yellow, Green

Han Tao, Hailing Zhao et al.•ARTICLE•Made in China Journal•2023

When the Health Code was in use in China, the local governments of Shenzhen and Changsha, like many others, required individuals to present a ‘green code’ to move within and between locations. In this essay, we focus on moments when green codes unexpectedly turned yellow. By studying these changes, we gain insight into how the infrastructure of automated control was challenged when people affected by the system and those administering it had to f…

  • Finding Good Help

Open Access•Qiuyu Jiang, Jesper Zeuthen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Current Chinese Affairs•2023•Referencias: 9

This article studies the making of a small fragment of China's social credit system by focusing on the evolution of digital mediation in the market for domestic service. We study the ongoing development and reconfiguration of various forms of digital mediation in the domestic service labour market from early local digital blacklisting attempts to the making of a nationwide app linked to the social credit system. We find that digital mediation so …

  • Local Politics in the Age of Automated Decision-Making in China

Haiqing Yu, Jesper Willaing Zeuthen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary China•2023•Citada por: 2

This article uses the case of the Henan health code scandal and Chinese netizens’ response to it to illustrate the local politics in the age of automated decision-making systems in China. It examines how a local stability maintenance endeavour has become a sign of the misuse and abuse of power and technology by an authoritarian Party-state and its ruling elites to safeguard their own interests and power. The performative disciplining of local cul…

  • Rescaling China's rural-urban frontier

    Open Access•Jesper Willaing Zeuthen, Jesper Zeuthen•ARTICLE•China Information•2020•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 23

This article examines how zoning - awarding exceptional status to selected sites - has been used as a governance tool to regulate access to land made available through land-use changes on the outskirts of Chengdu between 2007 and 2018. By studying these claims to exceptional status and the implementation of associated policies at the local level, the article seeks to demonstrate how zoning reconfigures power locally. The article argues that zonin…

  • China's rural urbanization and the state

    Open Access•Elena Meyer-Clement, Jesper Willaing Zeuthen et al.•ARTICLE•China Information•2020•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 13

Since 2014, under the policy of ‘new-type urbanization’ (新型城镇化), Xi Jinping’s government has worked towards a more sustainable form of urbanization. One important aspect of this policy shift is a more balanced development between cities and rural areas, which is intended to improve the living conditions of both rural migrants in the cities and the rural population in the countryside. These goals are not new. For example, political attempts to sti…

  • Bittersweet China

    Open Access•Michael B Griffiths, Jesper Zeuthen•ARTICLE•Journal of Current Chinese Affairs•2014•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 13

This paper argues that new interpretations of “eating bitterness” ([Formula: see text], chiku) have firmly entered the landscape of China's social organisation. Whereas the bitterness eaten by heroic types in China's revolutionary past was directed towards serving others, now the aim of eating bitterness is self-awareness. Furthermore, bitterness-eating, which once pertained to rural-urban migrant workers as opposed to discourses of urban “qualit…

  • Rule through Difference on China's Urban–Rural Boundary

    Jesper Zeuthen•ARTICLE•Third World Quarterly•2012•Citada por: 3

In both the academic debate as well as in Chinese politics urban–rural difference is a frequently used categorisation. Policies addressing previous neglect of rural China have been the official top-priority of China's current leadership since it came to power in 2003–2004. This article argues that we need to nuance the distinct dichotomy between urban and rural, and look into the specifics of how differences are actively mobilised when claims are…
