Staging friendship
This article studies Indian‐Bangladeshi friendship ethnographically, as a contested political imaginary, claim, and relation, from the vantage of its shared borderlands. Staging friendship, I show, is a geopolitical project that engages equally the highest echelons of the Indian and Bangladeshi states and ordinary residents of its marginalized borderlands. In conversation with the anthropological and interdisciplinary scholarship on friendship an…
Mobilizing Documents
This co‐authored essay builds on a growing anthropological literature that engages critically and creatively with idealized official and popular ideas about documents of/in migration regimes. Documents are often championed as a common and unquestionable good in transnational migration but they are intrinsically tied to inequalities and exclusions. As such they can be the source of hope for migrants, but are frequently also the source of violence,…

Borderlands as Barracks
What does militarism in the timespace of war-preparedness look like in the majority world? Drawing on ongoing research on soldiering in postcolonial India, focused on the Border Security Force, I examine everyday life and labor within security institutions: soldiers' routines in barracks, prohibited friendships, hardships, and longings. Bringing feminist thought and the political anthropology of security regimes into conversation with a materiali…
Food Memories and Diaspora of Culinary Traditions
This article considers the food memories and diaspora of culinary traditions among the communities residing in present-day Dholavira village, Gujarat, India. Dholavira village, located near the Dholavira Harappan World Heritage site, is home to several ethnic communities. Over the last few decades, there has been a proliferation of the idea of food archaeology in the subcontinent's culinary research, but most studies conducted so far have highlig…
Security Regimes
This article reviews key theoretical and methodological contributions that anthropologists have made to the study of what we call security regimes. While anthropologists have been instrumental in denaturalizing discourses of security, much of the existing literature on who security actors are or where their work and force are to be found remains focused on the masculinist frontlines and visibly spectacular instances of security state power. We ad…
Domestic Affairs
How do protests and security regimes engage each other on the question of difference? This question frames this essay's ethnographic portrayal of the expression of dissent and political claims in a borderland site of national security and the Indian security state's management of such dissent to reinforce its legitimacy as a liberal democracy. Border residents in eastern India, predominantly Muslim or depressed caste, are minority citizens. By cl…
Security from the South
This introduction offers “security from the South” as a method and an analytic to trace the colonial continuities, the imperial geographies, and the forms of difference through which people become subjects of, resist, and shore up security regimes across the world. Rather than one overarching set of politics, practices, and ideas that constitute “security,” the essay insists on a pluriversal lens onto a world in which security regimes appear begu…
Generations
The notion of generations runs through feminist theory, rendering it singular and disciplining its proper subjects—but might there be modes of generational thought that explode the bounds of linearity and propriety, offering ways to think of kinship and generativity amid and despite conditions of violence? Drawing on ethnography situated in South Asia, and the gendered insights that emerge from it, we reflect on feminist knowledge as a site of ki…
Barbed Wire in an Agrarian Borderland
Militarized borders have increased rapidly in the twenty-first century and come to be a global phenomenon. The high border wall built by the United States at its border with Mexico and the electrified fencing at the Hungarian border with Serbia are examples of the infrastructurally advanced Euro-American borders that have become icons of this phenomenon. Yet this tells only one part of the story of militarized borders: as I find in my research in…
Security Socialities
India imposes an increasingly militarized border security agenda along its officially “friendly” border with Bangladesh with a range of preemptive practices to control the illegal movement of people and goods. Focusing ethnographic attention on everyday mobility, I view the articulations of national security in India's eastern borderlands through a gender lens to trace the logics of threat and protection that are made and unmade in everyday civil…
Chor , Police and Cattle
India’s border with Bangladesh figures in the Indian national imagination as a unifying construct for multiple anxieties from illegal immigration to cattle smuggling, thus garnering public support for increased border security. What does a view from the lived and messy realities of the borderlands offer when we shift our focus from the fetish of the borderline as a political and religious marker of difference? This essay tracks the binary of lega…

Everything Must Match
India's militarization of its border with Bangladesh has grown alongside a paranoia around the figure of the "infiltrator" made synonymous with the "Bangladeshi illegal migrant." Set in the borderlands of India and Bangladesh, where ethnic, racial, and linguistic markers do not allow for an easy distinction to be made between the Bengali members of two nation-states, this article focuses on the paradoxes of documentary citizenship. Residents of t…
Borderland city in New India
Anti-trafficking and its discontents
India's eastern border areas with Bangladesh has been the target of concerted anti-trafficking interventions for decades now, to stop human trafficking from Bangladesh into India transiting through these areas, and also of girls and women from these areas to other parts of the country. This article presents an ethnographic examination of such an anti-trafficking campaign in tandem with migrant women's responses to and negotiations of these influe…
Changing homelands
Cross-border activities in everyday life
This paper will address the multiple forms and layers of porosity that give borderlands, such as the Bengal borderland, their distinctive nature as zones of contestation. Cross-border interactions continue to be an integral feature of everyday life in the Bengal borderland despite increasing militarisation and regulation by the Indian government in the last decade. Criminalization of local cross-border flows has driven them underground - while or…
