Urban Amenities in Chinese Cities
This study investigates inter-city disparities in the distribution of social amenities for four demographic groups across mainland China, moving beyond the conventional focus on knowledge-economy amenities to include relatively disadvantaged populations. It further explores the relationship between amenity distribution and China’s urban hierarchy at multiple geographical scales. Results show that amenities are disproportionately concentrated in c…
Spatiotemporal Analysis of Urban Perception Using Multi-Year Street View Images and Deep Learning
Spatial perception is essential for understanding residents’ subjective experiences and well-being. However, effective methods for tracking changes in spatial perception over time and space remain limited. This study proposes a novel approach that leverages historical street view imagery to monitor the evolution of urban spatial perception. Using the central urban area of Shanghai as a case study, we applied machine learning techniques to analyze…
Shaping Sustainable Futures on T ik T ok? Media Literacy, Youth Education and the SDG s
Social media platforms such as TikTok, Bilibili and YouTube increasingly shape how young people perceive, imagine and enact sustainable lifestyles. From ‘low‐carbon challenges’ to short documentaries, sustainability has become as much a mediated spectacle as an educational practice. This Perspective examines how these platforms simultaneously open new spaces for engagement while reproducing risks of greenwashing, consumerist spectacle and algorit…
Six advances in research on bilingualism
In the 30 years since the publication of Cognitive Processing in Bilinguals (Harris, 1992), the study of cognitive processing in bilingual speakers has branched out in several new directions. Each of these new directions has involved advances in theories, conceptualizations, methods, and findings. The six new directions we will highlight are these
The association between polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin exposure and cancer mortality in the general population
Introduction Earlier research has indicated that being exposed to polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) in the workplace can heighten the likelihood of cancer-related deaths. Nevertheless, there is limited information available regarding the connection between PCDD exposure and the risk of cancer mortality in the general population (i.e., individuals not exposed to these substances through their occupation). Methods The National Health and Nu…
Association between single and mixed exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and biological aging
Background Aging is one of the most important public health issues. Previous studies on the factors affecting aging focused on genetics and lifestyle, but the association between polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and aging is still unclear. Methods This study utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2003–2010. A total of 8,100 participants was used to construct the biological age predictors by using r…
Developing SWAT‐S to strengthen the soil erosion forecasting performance of the SWAT model
Soil erosion is an important cause of global land degradation, and accurate monitoring of it is essential. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), a distributed hydrological model, is an advanced technique for predicting soil erosion at watershed scale. However, as the erosion framework was established in gently sloping land, SWAT is limited in predicting soil erosion in some highland and mountainous regions. Therefore, this study suggested a …

Understanding Chinese Governance by Critiquing ‘Religion’
As an indirect response to Galen Watts and Sharday Mosurinjohn’s “Can Critical Religion Play by Its Own Rules?” this article aims to explicate what ‘critical religion’ as a distinct theoretical framework means for the author in terms of how it has provided them a critical framework for understanding the history of China, especially its transition of self-identification from tianxia ( 天下 , all under Heaven) to a secular nation state, and some of i…
Not about religion
As one of the most significant events in the history of Sino-Western interaction and that of Chinese Christianity, the "Chinese Rites Controversy" has been the subject of numerous studies from both Western and Chinese scholars since the 1980s. When interpreting the rites issue of the Controversy, most studies see the crux of it as the "religious" nature of the Confucian rites. In contrast to this dominant understanding, this article argues that b…
Evaluation of the impact of the Gully Land Consolidation Project on runoff under extreme rainfall
Extreme rainfall is an important driver of soil erosion and land damage. The Gully Land Consolidation program (GLCP) was first launched in 2011 as a major land reclamation practice to increase farmland in the Loess Plateau of China. Studying the impact of artificial projects on hydrology can help humans to respond to the various water issues, but the assessment of the effects of the GLCP on extreme rainfall‐induced water runoff at watershed scale…
Is China Repressing or Moulding Religion? ‘Religious Freedom’, Post-coloniality, and the Chinese State Building
This article focuses on three conceptual lenses through which a better understanding of the politics of religion in contemporary China is expected to obtain. On the basis of a genealogical and discursive analysis of ‘religious freedom’ as a paradoxical concept and institution, and by identifying the ‘post-colonial’ condition of contemporary China, this article argues for a non-dichotomous understanding of the Chinese and Western political approac…

Acquisition of Chinese Verb Separation by Adult L2 Learners
Chinese verb separation is a grammatical construction in which a bimorphemic verb compound separates and expands into a verb phrase. For example, to say "sang one song", one must insert the aspect marker le and classifier phrase yī shǒu between the verb chàng gē 'sing-song' as in chàng le yī shǒu gē (sing-LE-one-classifier-song). Adult second language (L2) learners face at least three problems related to acquiring verb separation: separation patt…
Chronic Illness, Subjective Wellbeing, and Health Services Availability
Chronic illness is prevalent in older adults. While current scholarship has examined how various factors may be associated with the onset of chronic illnesses, fewer scholars have examined the role of health services availability. Drawing on a sample of older adults aged 50 and above from wave 16 of the Household, Income, and Labour Dynamics in Australia survey and geo-coded information of general practitioners (GPs) from the Australian Medical D…

A Reflection on China’s Economic Reform from the Perspective of Catholic Social Teaching
It has been nearly four decades since China initiated its economic reform in 1978. In spite of the fact that this reform has brought unprecedented economic growth to China, it is viewed by many (including myself) as problematic and has recently been caught in a tension between recession and inequity. This article explores the structural flaws of China’s economic reforms in the light of modern Catholic social teaching, with particular reference to…
