The impact of drought on farm economic performance
We estimate the effect of drought on farm economic performance, examine the sensitivity of farms’ historical performance to drought conditions, and determine the effect of a future increase in drought conditions on farm economic performance. Since the effects of drought are both spatially and temporally heterogeneous, we adopt a panel regression method that accounts for multidimensional fixed effects in all regression parameters. We apply this me…
Support to ‘non-clients
Social service provision in Europe has increasingly incorporated informal carers. Consequently, these carers are now included within the scope of all social workers, including care managers. Most support for carers is indirect support, where opportunities for respite are channelled through the care receiver's needs assessment. This approach highlights the unique role of care managers providing carer support as they balance their public task direc…
Farm performance and input self-sufficiency increases with functional crop diversity on Swedish farms
Diversified crop production is a key agroecological practice that enhances ecosystem functions and reduces reliance on costly external inputs, such as for plant protection and nutrition but might also increase labour costs and lower crop yields. We investigate if functional diversification, i.e., cultivation of crop species with contrasting ecological functions, is associated with a higher growth in farm economic performance and input self-suffic…
Amenities and new firm formation in rural areas
Building on the neo-endogenous rural development model and the resource-based view of the firm, this paper investigates the role of place-based amenities for new firm formation. Empirically, we employ a full-population dataset encompassing new firms in Sweden from 2009 to 2016, combined with geocoded datasets with the spatial distribution of nature- and culture-based amenities. The results show that local amenities are indeed important factors in…
As far below as you can come’? Historical archaeology on vulnerability and marginalization of life at the bottom of the social ladder
In the 19th and early 20th centuries there were numerous non-proprietors andpaupers in the Swedish countryside, such as crofters, boarders and inhabitants of rural slums.Multisource methods such as triangulation of written documents, historical maps and archaeologicalevidence are used to study the living conditions, vulnerability and marginalization ofboarders and inhabitants of rural slums from an environmental justice perspective. Being poorals…
The Role of Land Use Consolidation in Improving Crop Yields among Farm Households in Rwanda
Relative to other developing regions, the role of land consolidation in increasing crop yields is poorly understood in sub-Saharan Africa. This paper examines the role of land use consolidation on agricultural productivity among smallholder farmers in Rwanda. Household-level data are used to estimate a fixed-effects model with matched control groups to mitigate selection bias. The study finds a positive association between land use consolidation …
Agriculture's transformation and land-use change in a post-urban world
Invisible and Ignored
This paper aims to discuss subalterns in different social environments in Sweden. The potential of archaeological studies of landless subalterns in rural and urban areas are shown though a number of case studies. It is argued that archaeology can show the multivocality of the lives of the subalterns, in the same way as it shows how the subalterns organized their daily life. This is done through the use of the concepts of matterscape, powerscape, …

Spatial spillovers and households’ involvement in the non-farm sector
This paper tests for external effects of local economic activity on non-farm income using survey data from Rwanda. The empirical analysis uses a random sample of 8071 households and a multilevel model to mitigate correlations between individual outcomes and geographical variables. Findings show a positive association between a higher initial local diversity of economic activity and non-farm earnings. Results also point to the importance of access…
Empowering marginal lifescapes
There is a rich, but unacknowledged, heritage of rural subalterns, crofters, in Scandinavia. A Swedish-Norwegian interdisciplinary research-network investigated the most prominent category – the remains of crofts. Due to industrialisation, urbanisation and the modern welfare state, the institution of crofting was abolished, and many crofters left for opportunities elsewhere. The welfare state transformed a landscape of living and working people i…
Are valuations of place-based amenities driven by scale
Amenities play an important role in explaining regional attractiveness as they increase the competition between places and the demand for housing. This paper contributes to the literature on valuations of place-based amenities by estimating hedonic prices for a differentiated set of amenities, and by examining the link between urban density and amenity valuations. The empirical analysis is based on a sample of 8319 single-family home sales observ…

A Baroque Landscape of Earth, Water and Fire
This article uses the elemental concepts of earth, water and fire to examine the production, use and control of space in the seventeenth-century Wrangel estate at Skokloster in central Sweden. Using a relational approach, the paper discusses how the elements symbolically express a part of the baroque aesthetic, how they were emphasised or pinned down as part of an economic asset, and how they reacted and produced space in dialogue with human agen…
