    Open Access•Aki Roberts, John M Roberts•ARTICLE•Criminology & Public Policy•2022•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 18

Research summary Police use of violence may threaten police agencies’ effectiveness by reinforcing residents’ legal cynicism and disengagement from police. We examined police lethal violence against Black people and its relationship with clearance by arrest in a sample of Black victims’ crime incidents in over 350 jurisdictions in 2015, via Mapping Police Violence and the National Incident‐Based Reporting System (NIBRS). We calculated each crime …

Critical theorists often argue that prosumption leads to new forms of exploitation. For example, social media users generate and produce content for social media pages, but undertake this activity in their leisure time and through their ‘free labour’. Yet, the vast majority are paid nothing by social media companies for their efforts. However, we are sceptical of this particular critical account primarily because we do not believe the framework o…

  • Multiscalar Perspectives on Social Networks in the Late Prehispanic Southwest

    Open Access•B J Mills, Matthew A Peeples et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•2015•Citada por: 29•Referencias: 60

Analyzing historical trajectories of social interactions at varying scales can lead to complementary interpretations of relationships among archaeological settlements. We use social network analysis combined with geographic information systems at three spatial scales over time in the western U.S. Southwest to show how the same social processes affected network dynamics at each scale. The period we address, A.D. 1200-1450, was characterized by mig…

  • Network Contacts and Activity Domains

John M Roberts, Jr John Roberts et al.•ARTICLE•Human Organization•2014

We investigate whether the structure of network relations is linked to the nature of network participants' activities. In the organizational setting, organizational activities in different domains likely have different informational needs, and, therefore, network relations may reflect the particular activities they support. Similarity in the network relations associated with various domains may reflect similarity in the inherent

  • The Dynamics of Social Networks in the Late Prehispanic US Southwest

    B J Mills, John M Roberts et al.•CHAPTER•Network Analysis In Archaeology…•2013

This chapter conducts social network analysis on two case studies from the late prehispanic US Southwest. It takes a diachronic perspective in order to look at network dynamics over a 200-year period (ad 1200 to 1400). The case studies chosen are areas where, through independent data, extensive migration has been demonstrated and is widely accepted. The analyses pertain to three specific topics of archaeological interest: (1) first-comer advantag…

  • Transformation of social networks in the late pre-Hispanic US Southwest

    Open Access•B J Mills, Jeffery J Clark et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2013

The late pre-Hispanic period in the US Southwest (A.D. 1200–1450) was characterized by large-scale demographic changes, including long-distance migration and population aggregation. To reconstruct how these processes reshaped social networks, we compiled a comprehensive artifact database from major sites dating to this interval in the western Southwest. We combine social network analysis with geographic information systems approaches to reconstru…

  • Prevalence of Male Clients of Street Prostitute Women in the United States

Devon D Brewer, Devon Brewer et al.•ARTICLE•Human Organization•2008

Survey estimates of the prevalence of clients of prostitute women are biased because men underreport sex with prostitutes. We conducted capture-recapture analyses of prostitution arrest records in several United States metropolitan areas and found that about two to three percent of adult male residents patronized local street prostitutes during observation periods of two to five years. An estimate from Colorado Springs, based on the prevalence of…

  • When Missing Data Are Not Missing

    Open Access•Tim Wadsworth, John M Roberts•ARTICLE•Criminology•2008•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 19

The Supplemental Homicide Reports (SHR) are widely used in criminological research and inform a broad range of research topics and subsequent policy applications. A serious issue with the SHR is missing information about the offender and incident in many recorded homicides. Although it is convenient to discard cases with missing data before analysis, such discarding is not theoretically justified and can lead to incorrect substantive conclusions.…

    John M Roberts•ARTICLE•Journal of Southeast European and…•2006

This article addresses the core issue of the transit of oil and gas across Black Sea countries and its impact on European energy security. The littoral countries of the Black Sea play a critical role in European energy security, not least because they participate significantly in oil and gas reaching Europe’s major consumer markets from further afield. They can be expected to continue to do so even as the European Union attempts to diversify its …

  • Laws of Nature” as an Indexical Term

    Open Access•John M Roberts, John Roberts•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Science•1999•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 5

David Lewis's best-system analysis of laws of nature is perhaps the best known sophisticated regularity theory of laws. Its strengths are widely recognized, even by some of its ablest critics. Yet it suffers from what appears to be a glaring weakness: It seems to grant an arbitrary privilege to the standards of our own scientific culture. I argue that by reformulating, or reinterpreting, Lewis's exposition of the best-system analysis, we arrive a…

This study of the Monday Nite Pool League is a continuation of earlier research into recreational tavern pool. We argue that the very competition that is the reason for the league's being contributes to the development of endogenous conflicts within the game that lead some players to quit because the original reasons for their involvement in the game have been eliminated or vitiated. This dynamic, the development of endogenous conflicts, probably…

The automobile is a cultural trait diagnostic of a cultural pattern which is so important and pervasive in contemporary American life that it may well be one of the foci of the total culture. This driving pattern has long merited more anthropological attention than it has received. The exploratory study described here, however, deals only with a limited aspect of the general pattern, namely expressive self-testing in driving, on the basis of a si…

Polytheism is not likely to be understood fully until it has been investigated at individual and small group levels. In this study of Japanese religious belief, hierarchical clustering and multidimensional scaling, and interviewing, have been used to analyze pile sorts of the names of sacred places that a male informant could easily recall. The same procedures were then followed with the informant's gods, and by his wife for her sacred places and…

This book analyzes beliefs held by the great majority of the population of rural Tlaxcala a generation ago and chronicles its drastic transformation since then. A comparison of the categorizations and rankings of lathe produced parts for samples of machinists and non-machinists indicates that machinists judge parts primari…
