  • To share or not to share – understanding individuals’ willingness to share biomarkers, sensor data, and medical records

    Open Access•Robert L Bach, H Silber et al.•ARTICLE•Information Communication & Society•2025

Technological advances in the recent past made it possible for researchers to collect and analyze large amounts of health data at unprecedented scale and speed. For example, fitness trackers and smartwatches produce steady flows of information on individuals’ health. Biomarker data and medical records allow to study individuals at new levels of granularity. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted that access to such data for health research and evi…

  • Does a QR Code in the Invitation Letter Increase Participation in a Push-to-web Survey

Open Access•Claudia Schmiedeberg, Jette Schröder et al.•ARTICLE•CAM•2025

QR codes are increasingly used in postal invitations to web surveys to facilitate participation. We experimentally tested how a QR code in the invitation letter affects participation in a push-to-web survey of the German family panel (pairfam). The response rate was three percentage points higher with QR codes than without. The QR code effect on response did not differ by gender or education, but it was significantly higher for middle-aged than f…

  • Did You Like the Interview? Interviewer Effects on Respondents' Interview Pleasantness Ratings

    Open Access•Claudia Schmiedeberg, Jette Schröder•ARTICLE•CAM•2024•Referencias: 39

Although it has long been acknowledged that interviewers play a crucial role in the survey data collection process, there is little research concerning interviewer effects on how respondents perceive the interview. We investigate whether interviewer effects exist regarding how much respondents report having enjoyed the interview and whether these effects can be explained by interviewer characteristics. We use data from wave 9 of the German Family…

  • Consent to data linkage for different data domains – the role of question order, question wording, and incentives

Christoph Beuthner, Bernd Weiß et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2023•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 7

As our modern world has become increasingly digitalized, various types of data from different data domains are available that can enrich survey data. To link survey data to other sources, consent from the survey respondents is required. This article compares consent to data linkage requests for seven data domains: administrative data, smartphone usage data, bank data, biomarkers, Facebook data, health insurance data, and sensor data. We experimen…

  • Effects of Partner Presence During the Interview on Survey Responses

    Open Access•Jette Schröder, Claudia Schmiedeberg•ARTICLE•Sociological Methods & Research•2023•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 33

Despite the fact that third parties are present during a substantial amount of face-to-face interviews, bystander influence on respondents’ response behavior is not yet fully understood. We use nine waves of the German Family Panel pairfam and apply fixed effects panel regression models to analyze effects of third-party presence on items regarding the sharing of household tasks between partners. We find that both male and female respondents repor…

  • Enhancing Participation in Probability-Based Online Panels

Open Access•Nils Witte, Ines Schaurer et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science Computer Review•2022•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 11

This article investigates how mail-based online panel recruitment can be facilitated through incentives. The analysis relies on two incentive experiments and their effects on panel recruitment, and the intermediate participation in the recruitment survey. The experiments were implemented in the context of the German Emigration and Remigration Panel Study and encompass two samples of randomly sampled persons. Tested incentives include a conditiona…

  • Estimating and Explaining the Prevalence of Tuberculosis for Asylum Seekers Upon Their Arrival in Germany

Open Access•Sven Stadtmüller, Jette Schröder et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Immigrant and Minority…•2020

Up until recently incidences of tuberculosis (TB) had been declining for many years in Germany. The rise in TB cases coincided with a large increase in the number of people applying for asylum. We combine data from various sources to estimate the at-entry prevalence of TB for asylum seekers from 18 countries of origin and rely on survey data to explain the varying risk of suffering from TB. Our results reveal that asylum seekers from Eastern Afri…

  • Does panel conditioning affect data quality in ego-centered social network questions

  • Secondary Respondent Consent in the German Family Panel

Open Access•Claudia Schmiedeberg, Laura Castiglioni et al.•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Sociological…•2016•Referencias: 3

To achieve high return among secondary respondents, primary respondents’ consent rates must be high. In the German Family Panel (pairfam), a large, randomly sampled panel study, primary respondents’ consent rates to surveying their parents were found to be low. Since we suspected that the underlying reason could be interviewer behavior, we tested in an experiment if placing the consent questions in the self-interview (CASI) part of the interview …

  • Does Sexual Satisfaction Change With Relationship Duration

  • The Influence of Relationship Quality on the Participation of Secondary Respondents

    Open Access•Jette Schröder, Laura Castiglioni et al.•ARTICLE•Comparative Population Studies•2013•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 3

The pairfam study offers the rare opportunity of conducting dyadic analyses of partner and of parent-child relationships. Not only the randomly drawn anchor respondents are surveyed in the study, but also - with the consent of the anchors - their partners, parents and children. However, we must ask whether or in how far the participation of the secondary respondents is selective, thus introducing a nonresponse bias in the dyadic data. This articl…
