Comparing Motivations for Anabolic-Androgenic Steroid Use Among an International Sample of Men
Introduction: Anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) are used for medical and non-medical purposes. Although the motivations underpinning AAS consumption among men have been explored, less is understood about age-related differences. This research compares AAS use motivations between men aged <40 and ≥40 years. Method: Data were drawn from the 2024 Global Drug Survey (GDS2024), an international, self-selected online convenience sample, comprising 1,1…
Modifiable Determinants of Psychological Harms among Male Image and Performance Enhancing Drug Consumers
BACKGROUND: Image and performance-enhancing drugs (IPEDs) are linked to undesirable psychological effects (e.g., depression), influenced by various factors. This study examined associations between non-modifiable (e.g. age) and modifiable (e.g. prescription status, dosage regimen, polypharmacy load) factors and psychological effects among male IPED consumers. METHODS: Data from 785 males (median age = 30) reporting past-year IPED consumption in t…
Mental health correlates of risky anabolic-androgenic steroid use in Australian alcohol and other drug treatment services
Background Anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) use is increasing globally yet remains poorly integrated into alcohol and other drug (AOD) service models. This study aimed to examine data from AOD service clients using AAS, seeking to understand the psychosocial correlates of risky use. Methods We analyzed service intake data from 2022-2025, comprising adults (N = 18786) who reported prior use of AAS (N = 521; 92.7% male). Measures included demograph…

The Trenbolo(g)ne Sandwich
Making ‘safer injecting’ matter for people who inject image and performance enhancing drugs
Image and performance-enhancing drugs (IPEDs) are primarily injected intramuscularly or subcutaneously, yet traditional harm reduction strategies, focused on blood-borne virus prevention, often overlook the specific health enhancement goals of people who use IPEDs. This study advocates for a collaborative approach to safer injecting practices, informed by the lived-living experiences of people injecting IPEDs, to develop targeted messaging that a…
Distinct Drinking Patterns, Help Seeking, and Alcohol-Related Regret in ADHD, Autism, and AuDHD
ADHD is associated with higher alcohol use, while autism is linked to lower use, but little is known about patterns among individuals with both conditions (AuDHD), particularly when accounting for mental health. This study examined whether alcohol consumption, drunkenness, regret, and help-seeking differ across ADHD, autism, AuDHD, and controls, and whether regret predicts intentions to reduce drinking. Using data from the 2021 Global Drug Survey…
Psychedelics and Sexual Trauma
Psychedelics are theorized to enhance emotional openness and interpersonal attunement, but their effects in sexual contexts - particularly among those with a history of sexual trauma - remain underexplored. This study investigated whether individuals who had used psychedelics to cope with or overcome sexual trauma (Psy-CST) reported different experiences of sexual communication and emotional connection compared to those who had not (No-Psy-CST). …

The relationship between cryptomarket drug purchase, social networks and adverse drug events
People who reported purchasing drugs from cryptomarkets more commonly reported having no drug-using network, and cryptomarket purchase was associated with reported adverse events. Our results support the notion that cryptomarket use increases drug-related harm, but further disentanglement of multiple complex mechanisms is needed in future research
Sweating for Sobriety
Despite various interventions available for substance use disorders, relapse rates remain substantial and, therefore, alternative strategies for attenuating dependence are needed. This study examined the associations between exercise frequency, illicit substance use, and dependence severity among a large sample of people who use drugs. The study utilized data from the Global Drug Survey 2018 ( N = 57,110) to investigate the relationship between e…

Differences in Trouble per Liter of Different Alcoholic Beverages —A Global Comparison with the Genacis Dataset
Different alcoholic beverages are seen as causing more or less trouble, with spirits historically often seen as the most troublesome. Differences in “trouble per liter” could reflect differences in the beverages themselves (e.g., faster effect of stronger beverages, additives/contaminants in informal beverages), or could reflect characteristics of those drinking each beverage. Using two alternative definitions of beverage choice and measures of p…
