  • Atmospheric effects in Scotland of the AD 1783–84 Laki eruption in Iceland

    Open Access•Alastair G Dawson, Martin P Kirkbride et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2021•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 2

Daily weather diaries and meteorological records from Scotland reveal complex weather patterns following the 1783–84 fissure eruption of the Laki volcano, Iceland. Four diarists in eastern and northern Scotland describe the near-simultaneous occurrence of discrete groups of days characterised by ‘foggy’, ‘gloomy’ and ‘hazy’ conditions during June and July 1783. The weather records suggest that an ash-rich portion of the initial plume may have arr…

  • Investigating the maximum resolution of μXRF core scanners

    Open Access•Lisa Orme, Liam Reinhardt et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2015•Referencias: 10

Micro x-ray fluorescence (μXRF) core scanning is capable of measuring the elemental composition of lake sediment at sub-millimetre resolution, but bioturbation and physical mixing may degrade environmental signals at such fine scales. The aim of this research is to determine the maximum possible resolution at which meaningful environmental signals may be reconstructed from lake sediments using this method. Sediment from a coastal lake in the Oute…

  • Onshore tsunami sediment transport mechanisms inferred from heavy mineral assemblages

    Open Access•Pedro Costa, Pedro J M Costa et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2015•Referencias: 2

The aim of this study is to discuss and to extend the characterization of (palaeo)tsunami deposits, and their source materials, based upon the detailed study of their heavy mineral assemblages. Results obtained from three distinct locations (Portugal, Scotland and Indonesia), different coastal contexts and chronologies (the tsunami events studied took place at 1500 cal. yr BP, AD 1755 and 2004) are summarized and discussed in order to contribute …

  • Late-Holocene and Younger Dryas glaciers in the northern Cairngorm Mountains, Scotland

    Open Access•Martin P Kirkbride, Martin Kirkbride et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2013•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 8

We present 17 cosmogenic 10 Be ages of glacial deposits in Coire an Lochain (Cairngorm Mountains), which demonstrate that glacial and nival deposits cover a longer timescale than previously recognised. Five ages provide the first evidence of a late-Holocene glacier in the British Isles. A previously unidentified moraine ridge was deposited after c. 2.8 kyr and defines a small slab-like glacier with an equilibrium line altitude (ELA) at c. 1047 m.…

  • Greenland (Gisp2) ice core and historical indicators of complex North Atlantic climate changes during the fourteenth century

    Open Access•Alastair G Dawson, K Hickey et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2007•Citada por: 11•Referencias: 2

The paper uses Greenland GISP2 ice core data together with historical documentary information to investigate the nature of climate changes that took place between AD 1270 and 1450 across the North Atlantic region. Detailed Deuterium and deuterium excess time series resolved to c. 8—10 samples per year are used to reconstruct relative changes in Greenland air temperature and past changes in sea surface temperature across the western North Atlantic…

  • The Role of Climate in Settlement and Landscape Change in the North Atlantic Islands

    Open Access•Andrew J Dugmore, Andrew Dugmore et al.•ARTICLE•Human Ecology•2007•Citada por: 28•Referencias: 22

In order to assess possible contributions of climate change to the human ecology of the Faroe Islands, proxy climate data from the Greenland Icesheet Project 2 (GISP2) are evaluated in relation to settlement and landscape \nchanges in the Faroes and other North Atlantic islands. Our aim is to identify \ntimes of unpredictable change in the context of cultural and environmental \n'memories'. A pan-Atlantic perspective is used to assess the utility…

  • Late-Holocene North Atlantic climate ‘seesaws’, storminess changes and Greenland ice sheet (Gisp2) palaeoclimates

    Open Access•Alastair G Dawson, L Elliott et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2003•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 2

The oxygen-isotope record of palaeotemperature from Greenland ice cores has for many years been the kingpin of climate reconstructions for the North Atlantic region and northern Europe. An air temperature ‘seesaw’ between Greenland and northern Europe, first described in AD 1765, is also well known and is related to the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). Whereas the NAO index series is based on instrumental records of air pressure, the North Atlan…

  • Holocene palaeoclimate records over Europe and the North Atlantic

    Open Access•Kay-Christian Emeis, Kay‐Christian Emeis et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2003•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 1

This Special Issue of The Holocene contains 16 research papers based on a symposium at the 11th International Meeting of the European Union of Geosciences held in Strasbourg in April 2001. The aim of the symposium was a state-of-the-art assessment of empirical studies of postglacial marine and terrestrial climatic archives and their integration with numerical climate models. This editorial places the individual papers in the broader context of na…

  • Complex North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) Index signal of historic North Atlantic storm-track changes

    Open Access•Alastair G Dawson, K Hickey et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2002•Citada por: 6

Previous reports have suggested a link between increased storminess in the North Atlantic during recent years with a period of time during which the North Atlantic Oscillation Index has been strongly positive. New analyses of late nineteenth-century gale-day data for meteorological stations in northern Scotland and western Ireland indicate that the relatively high storminess that characterized this period was associated with monthly NAO Index val…

  • Rapid Holocene relative sea-level changes in Gruinart, Isle of Islay, Scottish Inner Hebrides

    Open Access•Sa’niah Dawson, Sue Dawson et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1998•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 4

Litho- and biostratigraphic analyses undertaken in the Gruinart estuary, central Islay, reveal a detailed sedimentary record of Holocene relative sea-level changes and high-energy flood events during the last 10 000 years. During the Lateglacial-Holocene transition relative sea level had fallen to below c. 0.5 m OD and remained at this depth until c. 8830 14 C years BP. Thus, the early-Holocene minimum sea level is here, relatively well constrain…

  • A 200-year record of gale frequency, Edinburgh, Scotland

    Open Access•Alastair G Dawson, Kieran Hickey et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1997•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 1

Most research concerned with the relationship between volcanic activity and global climate change has focused on the impacts that volcanoes have on atmospheric temperature. Very little attention, however, has been given to the effect of volcanic eruptions on patterns of storminess. Here we present a historical record of gale-day frequency for Edinburgh, Scotland, extending from AD 1780 to 1988 (the Mossman-Hickey chronology), which we believe rep…

  • Tsunami sedimentation associated with the Lisbon earthquake of 1 November AD 1755

    Open Access•Alastair G Dawson, R A Hindson et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1995•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 1

A description is given of a distinctive marine deposit at Boca do Rio on the Algarve coast of Portugal. It is proposed here that the sediment accumulation was deposited by the tsunami generated by the Lisbon earthquake of 1 November, AD 1755. The deposit exhibits sedimentary characteristics quite unlike other coastal sediment accumulations that are deposited by more moderate wave régimes. These include laterally continuous sand layers, chaotic pe…
