Mental health of college sex workers
This study explored the impact of developmental and recent traumas on PTSD, anxiety, and depression among a sample of university students ( N = 410), including students who engaged in sex work during college. Using linear and hierarchical regressions, the study examined whether gender-based violence and potentially exploitative activities in college, specifically sexual assault (SA), sex work, sex trafficking, and intimate partner violence (IPV) …
Genetic and Environmental Associations Among Pain, Sleep Disturbances, and Substance Use Intent in Early Adolescence
PURPOSE: Pain, sleep disturbances, and substance use are common in adolescence, with research indicating that genetic and environmental factors account for variation in each of these behavioral and health outcomes. Moreover, pain, sleep disturbances, and substance use often co-occur during adolescence. However, research has not examined whether there is genetic and/or environmental covariation across these constructs in early adolescence or in di…
Ethnic–racial discrimination and mental health among Latinx college students
The Longitudinal Impact of Discrimination on Substance Use among Filipino and Korean American Youth
Asian American youth remain underrepresented in substance use research, despite growing visibility and evidence that some subgroups report disproportionately high levels of use. Although racial discrimination is a well-established risk factor for substance use, little is known about how its impact changes as Asian American youth grow up. This study used four waves of longitudinal data from 786 Asian American youth in the Midwestern U.S. (Mage.wav…
Ethnic-Racial Identity and Alcohol Use Moderated by Family Factors among Diverse Emerging Adults
Excessive alcohol use is associated with adverse outcomes, underscoring the importance of identifying factors that may reduce alcohol use among diverse emerging adults, including ethnic-racial identity (ERI) and family factors. Limited work has examined factors that moderate the relations between ERI and alcohol use. The current study tested whether family factors (i.e., parent education and family history of alcohol problems) moderated the relat…

Parental Influences on Substance Use Among First-Year College Students
This study took a person-centered approach to examine parental influences on alcohol and cannabis use among White and Hispanic/Latinx college students. 704 college students (74.4% female; 34.7% Hispanic/Latinx) completed an online survey. Latent profile analysis identified four parenting profiles characterized by different patterns of perceived parent-child relationship quality, parental monitoring, and parental disapproval of substance use: low …
Obstetrical and neonatal complications, prematurity, and childhood effortful control development
Premature infants may be at risk for lower effortful control, and subsequent lower academic achievement, peer competence, and emotional and physical wellness throughout the lifespan. However, because prematurity is related to obstetrical and neonatal complications, it is unclear what may drive the effect. Effortful control also has a strong heritable component; therefore, environmental factors during pregnancy and the neonatal period may interact…
Cultural Socialization and Civic Engagement Among Racially Diverse Students of Color
Understanding the factors that promote civic engagement among emerging adult college students is crucial, especially considering its association with positive youth development. The current study examined ethnic-racial identity (ERI) exploration, resolution, and affirmation as mediators of the relation between cultural socialization and civic engagement. Additionally, the extent to which students were raised in predominantly minoritized neighborh…
Family History and Alcohol Use Outcomes
BACKGROUND: College students are at risk for alcohol misuse and those who participate in organized sports are at even higher risk. Family history of alcohol problems (FH) and impulsivity are well-documented risk factors for alcohol use outcomes, but no research has examined the role of organized sports participation in moderating these associations. This study examined the associations between FH, alcohol consumption and alcohol use disorder (AUD…
Depressive Symptoms and Drinking to Cope in Relation to Alcohol Use Outcomes among White and Black/African American College Students
OBJECTIVE: Prior research shows that Black/African American adults experience more negative alcohol use consequences than White adults, despite lower alcohol consumption. Research also shows that Black/African Americans experience higher rates of depression, which can increase risk for alcohol consumption and alcohol use disorder (AUD) through drinking to cope. We examined associations between depressive symptoms and drinking to cope with alcohol…
Cultural Socialization and Ethnic-Racial Identity Mediated by Positive and Negative Conversations about Race
The current study examined associations between cultural socialization and ethnic-racial identity via positive and negative conversations about one’s ethnicity/race. Ethnic-racial differences between Asian American, African American, Latinx, Multiracial, and White students were explored. College students 18–22 (M age = 18.46) participating in a university-wide study provided self-reports of childhood cultural socialization, engagement in conversa…

Moderating Role of Healthcare Disruptions on Friend and Family Pandemic-Related Negative Life Events Predicting Latines’ Anxiety and Alcohol Use Over Time
Coffee and energy drink use patterns in college freshmen
The response pattern was ubiquitous, with ED + Co most likely, Co intermediate, and NoCE least likely to endorse a broad range of substance use, problem alcohol behaviors, and familial risk factors. The finding that the Co group differed from both the ED + Co and NoCE groups on 8 measures and from the NoCE group on one additional measure underscores the importance of looking at coffee in addition to EDs when considering associations between caffe…

Effects of Receiving Genetic Ancestry Results on Emerging Adults’ Ethnic-Racial Identity Affirmation
Ethnic-racial identity (ERI) is associated with adaptive outcomes in emerging adulthood, but more research is needed on factors that may inform ERI, such as receiving one’s genetic ancestry results. The current study examined changes in ERI using a pre-test post-test design in which 116 emerging adults 18–25 years were randomly assigned to either receiving their genetic ancestry results before the post-test (the testing condition) or after post-t…
Parenting Stress and Depressive Symptoms Among Chinese Parents of Children With and Without Oppositional Defiant Disorder
Mothers’ self‐reported emotion dysregulation
In the current study, we evaluated the extent to which mothers reported emotion dysregulation on the Difficulties with Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (DERS) (a) converged with physiological indices of emotion dysregulation while parenting, (b) correlated with maternal sensitivity, and (c) predicted infant attachment disorganization and behavior problems in a sample of 259 mothers and their infants. When infants were 6 months old, mothers’ physi…
Racial discrimination and alcohol problems among African American young adults
Both blatant and subtle forms of racial discrimination were associated with higher risk for alcohol use or problems among African American young adults. Racial socialization by friends while growing up may play an important role in alcohol use outcomes during young adulthood. Findings highlight the importance of considering different forms of racial discrimination and emphasize the unique roles of racial socialization across different social cont…
School Substance Use Norms and Racial Composition Moderate Parental and Peer Influences on Adolescent Substance Use
Parental and peer influences on adolescent substance use have been well demonstrated. However, limited research has examined how parental and peer influences vary across school contexts. This study used a multilevel approach to examine the effects of school substance use norms and school racial composition in predicting adolescent substance use (a composite measure of alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana use) and in moderating parental and peer influe…
Links Between Remembered Childhood Emotion Socialization and Adult Adjustment
The purpose of this article was to examine whether recollections of mothers' emotion socialization practices during childhood are linked to adult emotional well-being as indexed by depression, trait anger, and cardiac vagal tone, and whether these effects vary for African American and European American women. Participants included 251 women (128 European American, 123 African American) who ranged in age from 18 to 44 years ( M = 25 years). Multig…
