  • How many gaps are there? Investigating the regional dimension of the gender commuting gap

Open Access•Michaela Fuchs, Ramona Jost et al.•ARTICLE•Papers of the Regional Science…•2024•Referencias: 16

This paper investigates the gender gap in commuting by differentiating between the place of residence and work in urban and rural regions. Using administrative geo-referenced data for Germany and applying decomposition techniques, we provide evidence for a triple gap in commuting to the disadvantage of women. Apart from the overall gap, the regional disaggregation uncovers a further gap among workers commuting between rather than within regions, …

  • The contribution of knowledge-intensive firms to employment growth

Open Access•Mathias Heidinger, Michaela Fuchs et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies Regional Science•2024•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 6

Academic discussions have frequently examined the interrelation between regional employment growth and firm locations. Two growth patterns emerge: employment growth induced through new firm locations or vice versa, where firms locate in areas experiencing employment supply growth. The specific causal relationship responsible for regional employment growth in Germany remains uncertain. In the German context, however, more research is needed to ide…

  • Where do women earn more than men? Explaining regional differences in the gender pay gap

Open Access•Michaela Fuchs, Anja Rossen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Regional Science•2021

This paper provides new evidence on the magnitude and determinants of regional differences in the gender pay gap. On the basis of a comprehensive data set of all full‐time employees in Germany, we explain the profound variation of the gender pay gap at a small‐scale level with theory‐based individual and job‐related characteristics. Using the Oaxaca–Blinder decomposition, we find pronounced spatial differences in the impact of the considered dete…

  • Geschlechtsspezifische Ost-West-Unterschiede im Erwerbsverlauf

    Dana Müller, Michaela Fuchs•ARTICLE•Sozialer Fortschritt•2020

  • Do Start-ups Provide Employment Opportunities for Disadvantaged Workers

Open Access•Daniel Fackler, Michaela Fuchs et al.•ARTICLE•Industrial and Labor Relations…•2019•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 24

This article compares the hiring patterns of start-ups and incumbent firms to analyze whether start-ups offer relatively more job opportunities to disadvantaged workers. Using administrative linked employer-employee data for Germany that provide the complete employment biographies of newly hired workers, the authors show that young firms are more likely than incumbents to hire applicants who are older, foreign, or unemployed, or who have unstable…

  • Long‐run processes of geographical concentration and dispersion

Open Access•Wolfgang Dauth, Michaela Fuchs et al.•ARTICLE•Papers of the Regional Science…•2016•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 11

This paper analyses the evolution of geographical concentration in German manufacturing and service sectors over a long time period. Drawing on detailed plant data of 187 industries from 1980 to 2010, we corroborate previous studies and observe substantial concentrations in both sectors. However, we also document a secular trend of deconcentration over three decades, even in knowledge‐intensive industries. By constructing counterfactual distribut…
