Embeddedness and Restructuring
Free market ideology has continued its hegemonic reign notwithstanding considerable opposition. Under capitalism, the relationship between the political and economic realms is intricate. This inquiry on corporate restructuring in Singapore between the late 1990s and the early 2000s scrutinizes how a dominant state collaborated with the multinational corporations to reconstitute their accumulation regimes to outlast the business cycles. Based on s…
Service Workers
That all may be quiet on the shop floor could be a result of governmentality projects. But what lies beneath an appearance of professionalism? I undertook an empirical field study of workers in the service industry to examine contradictory and competing interests of employees and their employers and observed the dynamic constitution of subjectivity in situations of conflict. Based on a study of 56 service workers, this study first looks at the co…

Evolution of the petrochemical industry in Singapore
This paper examines the historical development of the petrochemical industry in Singapore. While it had its origins in an earlier political economy, the petrochemical industry emerged only during the industrialization of Singapore. In addition, throughout the ensuing post-industrialization process, the enterprise was at the forefront of the endeavours of the state at maintaining a viable manufacturing sector. In its development, the Petrochemical…
Industrializing Southeast Asia
This paper introduces the state of industrialization in Southeast Asia, rationale used to promote industrialization, the timing of policy emphasis on export orientation and the different outcomes enjoyed by the market and transition economies. Ideology and Changing Family Arrangements in Singapore
This study examines how individuals go about interweaving ideology with daily living to arrive at their own ideas about family practice. In Singapore, families constitute a rich ground for study due to the country's multicultural composition (77% ethnic Chinese, 14% Malay Muslim and 8% Hindu Indian). Four decades of rapid industrial development have wrought a parallel transformation in the way family life is conducted. The qualitative approach wa…

Financial Crisis and Social Restructuring in Singapore
This paper will approach the question of the social impact of the financial crisis from both the structural and micro perspectives. It will make use of data generated from small-scale studies of everyday life and statistical indicators of socio-economic transformations. We first discuss how the state was able to grasp opportunities presented by the crisis to reassert its hegemonic authority which has seen gradual erosions after more than three de…
Migration and the reconfiguration of Malaysia
Trilogy of Categorical Unfitness
In this article, the process of Singapore's rapid industrialization is used to illustrate what Jenks referred to as `the erratic evolution of the imagery of childhood and its changing modes of recognition and reception'. The inherent relationship between women and children situates the discussion in concurrent debates about the role of women. This article relates the formation of the child as a social status to the building of Singapore's rationa…
Automation and New Work Patterns
In Singapore, the state has a policy of the extensive encouragement of automation as well as the continuous upgrading of the labour force through further education and retraining. This paper reports on a survey of workers, together with case studies of firms, in the electronics industry. It suggests that the implementation of automation may at times be in conflict with the training and educational upgrading policy, and may be accompanied by exten…

The disintegration of Labour solidarity in recent years in multi-ethnic Malaysia poses a major challenge to the understanding of interested and concerned scholars. This paper addresses itself explicitly to this problem. To be effective, it is believed that a multi-pronged approach should be used. This article will trace and delineate changing patterns of capitalist accumulation while linking it to changes in the nature and composition of the Mala…
