Late Quaternary sea-level changes of the Persian Gulf
Late Quaternary reflooding of the Persian Gulf climaxed with the mid-Holocene highstand previously variously dated between 6 and 3.4 ka. Examination of the stratigraphic and paleoenvironmental context of a mid-Holocene whale beaching allows us to accurately constrain the timing of the transgressive, highstand and regressive phases of the mid- to late Holocene sea-level highstand in the Persian Gulf. Mid-Holocene transgression of the Gulf surpasse…

Walking on Eggshells
Eggshell is a potentially common archaeological resource, but it tends to be ignored. The recent development of ZooMS (zooarchaeology by mass spectrometry) as a rapid and robust system for taxonomic identification of preserved eggshell fragments has facilitated new insights into patterns of egg use in the past. This paper presents a case study of egg use at two sites in Anglo-Scandinavian York (Hungate and Coppergate). The results described below…

Human Evolution Out of Africa
Ancient Human Migration During the past 100,000 years or so, modern humans migrated from Africa into Eurasia, completely replacing existing populations of Neandertals by about 20,000 years ago. This occurred as the climate cooled toward a glacial maximum. Stewart and Stringer (p. 1317 ) review some of the recent evidence for how this demographic transition occurred. Data from ancient genomes of Neandertals and Denisovans coupled with our improved…

Conservation of archaeological mosaic pavements by means of reburial
In a burial environment ancient mosaic pavements are subject to a variety of mechanisms of deterioration, both physical and chemical. However, many pavements have survived, sometimes in exceptional condition. Additionally, some mosaics that have been discovered in recent times and reburied as a means of protection have also been well preserved. This indicates that reburial can be an effective means of preventive conservation and a viable response…
Neanderthal–modern human competition? A comparison between the mammals associated with Middle and Upper Palaeolithic industries in Europe during OIS 3
The extinction of the Neanderthals is generally believed to be due to interspecific competition with modern humans. This hypothesis is tested using the faunas accompanying Upper and Middle Palaeolithic archaeology in Europe dating to OIS 3 and the start of OIS 2 (60–20 ka BP). The issue is also considered in the light of ecological theory, controlled experiments and field studies of competition between congeneric species. This paper concludes tha…
The identification of extant european bird remains
This paper reviews the literature on the identification of bird bones found in European sites. Such a review is useful both to Quaternary palaeontologists and to zooarchaeologists attempting to identify bird bones. The publications are considered systematically. We stress that the published works should not be used for identification in isolation, but that a comparative collection is essential. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
Boxgrove, West Sussex
In 1988 an area of 12,000 m 2 in Quarry 2 at Boxgrove, West Sussex, was identified as being under threat front gravel and sand extraction. It was decided to sample the threatened area in 1989 with a series of 6 m 2 test pits. The results of this survey identified two areas that merited further investigation, and area excavations were carried out at Quarry 2/C and Quarry 2/D in 1990 and 1991 respectively. These concentrated on the main Pleistocene…
Potential Effects of Income Redistribution on Economic Growth
The Area Analysis of Resources
There has been increasing interest in this country in variations in expenditures between different local authorities among political scientists, social administrators, economists, and others, as there has been elsewhere. All these and other studies are distinguished by their concentration upon variations in expenditure between local authorities. The local authority has been treated as the basic unit. There has been no parallel development in stud…
