While prior literature has found that greater economic freedom improves economic growth, development, and productive entrepreneurship, the literature is mixed on economic freedom's impact on gender outcomes. We add to this literature by exploring several measures of gender outcome gaps in employment, financial inclusion, and education utilizing the women, business, and law index from the World Bank to proxy for the strength of legal institutions …

Education affects individual values and beliefs, mitigates prejudices and enhances open-mindedness. Additionally, education has been shown to affect cultural traits like trust and respect in societies. Building on this literature and employing an extensive individual-level cross country data from World Value Survey (WVS), we explore the role of educational attainment and cultural traits in shaping attitudes towards abortion. Our results show that…

  • Does corruption ever help entrepreneurship

Open Access•Nabamita Dutta, Russell S Sobel et al.•ARTICLE•Small Business Economics•2016

The current literature contains mixed results regarding the impact of corruption on entrepreneurship and economic growth. In this paper, we examine a much larger set of countries and time periods to attempt to gain insights into this relationship. In particular, the central question is whether corruption can compensate for a bad business climate. Our results are clear; corruption hurts entrepreneurship. The impact is smaller, but remains negative…

We find that presidential and congressional influences affect the rate of disaster declaration and the allocation of FEMA disaster expenditures across states. States politically important to the president have a higher rate of disaster declaration by the president, and disaster expenditures are higher in states having congressional representation on FEMA oversight committees. Election year impacts are also found. Our models predict that nearly ha…

  • Theory and Evidence on the Political Economy of the Minimum Wage

    Russell S Sobel•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•1999•Citada por: 18•Referencias: 5

This paper examines how closely the minimum wage has been set to the most popularly stated goals of minimun‐wage policy. I first estimate these goals: the minimum‐wage rate at which the relevant labor demand is unitary elastic‐maximizing the total earnings of minimum‐wage workers (about $5.35)‐and the level that would lift a typical minimum‐wage worker's family out of poverty (about $5.17). I can reject that the actual minimum‐wage policy has bee…
