  • Going beyond the guerre des mémoires in theatrical representations of the Algerian War

    Open Access•Fiona Barclay•ARTICLE•Modern & Contemporary France•2023•Referencias: 9

This article examines the 'guerre des mmoires' that has defined the memorial landscape surrounding the Algerian War and seen it mired it in a competitive memory dynamic that Benjamin Stora terms 'une surenchre victimaire'.It argues that since the fiftieth anniversary of independence in 2012 there are signs of attempts to move beyond the impasse.Drawing on the work of Jacques Rancire, Chantal Mouffe and Anna Cento Bull, the article examines two re…

  • Introduction

    Open Access•Fiona Barclay•ARTICLE•Journal of Migration History•2022•Referencias: 1

This article argues that the qualities associated with citizenship were put under increased pressure by the dissolution of states that followed the wars and the collapse of empires in the mid-twentieth century. The reconfigured states faced the challenge of redefining their national identity and, consequently, their relationship with the constituent populations. Displacements, both internal and across redrawn borders, were a frequent occurrence. …

  • The Rue d’Isly, Algiers, 26 March 1962

    Fiona Barclay•ARTICLE•French Politics Culture & Society•2021

This article examines the memorial discourses surrounding the massacre that occurred on 26 March 1962 when, in the week following the Franco–FLN ceasefire, French soldiers opened fire on a demonstration of unarmed European settler civilians, killing forty-six and wounding two hundred. Largely unknown among wider French society, references to the massacre have become a staple of the pied-noir activist discourse of victimhood, often advanced as evi…

  • Introduction

Fiona Barclay, Charlotte Ann Chopin et al.•ARTICLE•Settler Colonial Studies•2018

The unusual trajectory of settler colonialism in French Algeria, which culminated in Algerian independence and the exodus of European settlers, has often limited the interest of scholars who seek to understand settler colonialism as an enduring structure of oppression. For their part, scholars of French Algeria have yet to fully engage with the intellectual propositions of settler colonial studies, which has focused primarily on Anglophone and Is…

  • Remembering Algeria

    Fiona Barclay•ARTICLE•Settler Colonial Studies•2018

This article looks at the end of colonial Algeria and the subsequent repatriation of the settler population as it was experienced and remembered by the settler (or pied-noir) repatriates in the aftermath of the Algerian war. It argues that the often hostile reception which awaited repatriates arriving in mainland France played a fundamental role in the nascent pied-noir community’s reimagining of its identity, which was shaped by nostalgia, grief…

  • Climats de France

Fiona Barclay•ARTICLE•The Journal of North African…•2018

French literary representations of Algeria are frequently characterised by a tendency towards the envisioning of an imagined land, whether fed by orientalist or colonial ideology, or by the nostalg

  • Reporting on 1962

    Fiona Barclay•ARTICLE•Modern & Contemporary France•2014•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 2

This article offers a longitudinal review of print media representations of the European population in Algeria, from the final months of the Algerian war to commemorative coverage of the 50th anniversary in 2012. It traces the evolution of the métropole's relatively hostile view of the Français d'Algérie as a ‘foreign' people to the depiction of an integrated group whose voice has become incorporated within official memory. With reference to the …

  • Qu'est-ce qu'une génération

    Fiona Barclay, Cristina Johnston•ARTICLE•Modern & Contemporary France•2014•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 1

A glance back over past decades reveals the social landscape of France to be marked by an overlapping succession of formations identified or self-identifying as ‘generations’, from post-war baby-bo

  • Kristeva's Stranger Within

    Open Access•Fiona Barclay•ARTICLE•Paragraph•2010•Referencias: 1

This article draws on Kristeva's theories of the foreigner within the national boundaries and, combining this with her earlier work on the abject, considers the challenge posed by the individual who is rejected as foreign, to the boundaries which constitute collective and individual identity. With reference to Prévost's Le Passé sous silence (1998), it argues that the solutions posited by Kristeva are of limited value within contemporary French s…

  • L’Invisible Voyeur du Monde des Voyants’

    Fiona Barclay•ARTICLE•Language and Intercultural…•2006•Referencias: 1

Since decolonisation, the increase in immigration from France's former colonies in North Africa has prompted metropolitan writers to reconsider conceptions of French society. In their novels, Tournier and Hocquenghem present contemporary France through the defamiliarising eyes of a North African immigrant, who serves as a device for the critique of French culture. This article investigates the opposition between the objectifying culture of the We…
