Geospatial disparities in post-pandemic Sars-CoV-2 vaccination
While Chile achieved one of the world’s highest and most equitable SARS-CoV-2 vaccination coverages during the pandemic, less is known about the post-pandemic stage. This study examines within-country geospatial disparities in COVID-19 vaccination uptake and their socio-demographic determinants in two urban areas of Chile. A population-based survey conducted in May 2024 collected individual data on vaccination status and socio-demographic charact…
The Work Dimension in Multidimensional Poverty Measurement
When having a job is not enough
In developing countries, governments are rightly concerned with generating enough jobs. However, focusing solely on the quantity delivers a partial picture, as socioeconomic sustainability and productivity also depend on job quality. This paper shows that although Egypt has experienced reasonable economic growth between 1998 and 2018, labour force participation declined and job quality appears to have worsened. Based on several Latin American cas…
Population-based seroprevalence survey
Overall, vaccine acceptance is high. However, the acceptance of the last two doses was below expectations and showed heterogeneous geographical distribution. Adulthood is the most important predictor of vaccine uptake. Participants underestimated their level of risk. Risk communication must be improved, especially for risk groups, to help them perceive themselves as beneficiaries of vaccination. Efforts should be made to disseminate information o…
Overcoming Health Inequities
Background: In unequal economies, the spread of the first waves of the COVID-19 was usually associated with low socioeconomic status of individuals and their families. Chile exemplified this. By mid-2020, Chile had one of the highest SARS-CoV-2 infection rates in the world predominantly in poorer areas. A year later, the country launched a universal vaccination campaign based on the national strategy of immunization established in 1975. By 2022, …
Regional inequality in multidimensional quality of employment
This paper proposes a multidimensional synthetic index for measuring the quality of employment using the Alkire-Foster method. The results generated by this index highlight important differences between Chile's regions, but also a process of convergence, which has been mostly driven by regulatory changes and public policy rather than economic growth. The paper shows how much a synthetic index can contribute to regional analysis and how it can inf…
A Multidimensional Approach to Measuring Quality of Employment (QoE) Deprivation in Six Central American Countries
This paper proposes a methodology for measuring Quality of Employment (QoE) deprivation from a multidimensional perspective in six Central American countries (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama) using a dataset specifically designed to measure employment conditions. Building on previous work on multidimensional poverty and employment indicators, the paper uses the Alkire/Foster (AF) method to construct a synthetic…
Transnational entrepreneurs
Transnational Entrepreneurship (TE) is an increasingly important phenomenon, symptomatic for a globalised world with a large extent of migrants and interchanges between their countries of origin and residence. Our article deploys a unique data set which compares TE for two different national contexts and institutional settings: Chile and Germany. Using data from 2016 and 2017 Adult Populations Surveys (APS) of the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor …
The Quality of Employment (QoE) in nine Latin American countries
This paper proposes a methodology for measuring the quality of employment from a multidimensional and public policy perspective in Latin American developing countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay) using household and labour force survey data from 2015. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that the QoE can be measured using a multidimensional methodology that can inform policy ma…
A Multidimensional Poverty Measure for the Hindu Kush–Himalayas, Applied to Selected Districts in Nepal
Approximately 211 million people live in the Hindu Kush–Himalaya region. Although poverty levels in this region are high, there is a lack of cohesive information on the socioeconomic status of its populations that would enable decision-makers to understand different manifestations of poverty and design effective poverty alleviation programs. Hence, the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), in consultation with interna…
