  • Erasing critical scholarship

    Open Access•Susanne Täuber•ARTICLE•Organization•2026

Building on a number of case studies, this essay examines the role of university management for ensuring academic freedom in the European context. The emerging pattern points to academic freedom being granted to and withheld from scholars at the discretion of university managers, with attacks on academic freedom targeting mainly critical scholarship: academics who challenge, criticize and debate power differentials and inequality practices are in…

  • Experiences of Discrimination and LGBTQ+ Healthcare Avoidance

Open Access•Anna Barquinero Campodarve, Susanne Täuber et al.•ARTICLE•Tijdschrift voor Genderstudies•2025

Research has shown that the LGBTQ+ community – which encompasses sexual and gender minority individuals (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and other queer identities) – experiences health disparities and barriers in accessing healthcare. The current work examined the two sides of the coin of healthcare discrimination: on one hand, the consequences of healthcare discrimination events in LGBTQ+ patients (Study 1, N = 237) and, on the other hand, …

  • The impact of accredited social health activists in India on uptake of modern contraception

Open Access•Catherine Moughalian, Josué Almansa et al.•ARTICLE•Global Public Health•2024

The government of India introduced the Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) programme in 2006 to connect marginalised communities to the health system. ASHAs are mandated to increase the uptake of modern contraception through the doorstep provision of services. There is currently no evidence on the impact of ASHAs on the uptake of contraception at the national level. This paper examines the impact of ASHAs on the uptake of modern contraceptio…

  • Collective system‐supporting inaction

    Open Access•Susanne Täuber, Catherine Moughalian•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social…•2022•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 98

Recent protest movements such as #MeToo exposed that institutional change initiatives targeting harassment and discrimination have so far failed to achieve equity. We propose that this is because such policy initiatives fail to account for the motivation of those privileged by inequality regimes to maintain and perpetuate these systems. Addressing gaps in collective action scholarship, we introduce a normative framework conceptualising the inacti…

  • Many Analysts, One Data Set

Open Access•Raphael Silberzahn, Eric Luis Uhlmann et al.•ARTICLE•Advances in Methods and Practices…•2018

Twenty-nine teams involving 61 analysts used the same data set to address the same research question: whether soccer referees are more likely to give red cards to dark-skin-toned players than to light-skin-toned players. Analytic approaches varied widely across the teams, and the estimated effect sizes ranged from 0.89 to 2.93 ( Mdn = 1.31) in odds-ratio units. Twenty teams (69%) found a statistically significant positive effect, and 9 teams (31%…

  • The Impact of Intergroup Helping on Third Parties’ Perceptions of Group Reputation

    Susanne Täuber, Esther Van Leeuwen•ARTICLE•Social Psychology•2017•Referencias: 15

We investigated the consequences of intergroup helping for both the offering and the receiving group’s reputation in the eyes of third parties. In two experiments (N = 116 and N = 78), observers were presented with a group that offered versus requested help. Observers’ status beliefs confirmed the emergence of a status hierarchy that favored the group that offered help. Study 2 demonstrated that the newly emerged status differential quickly solid…

  • Outrage towards whom? Threats to moral group status impede striving to improve via out‐group‐directed outrage

    Open Access•Susanne Täuber, Martijn Van Zomeren•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social…•2013•Citada por: 15•Referencias: 47

Threats to group status can elicit different responses, ranging from those that motivate striving for improvement to those that motivate defending the threatened social identity. We examine why moral threats to group status may inhibit individuals' striving to improve. Specifically, we predicted that a threat to the group's moral status evokes a defensive emotional focus on the out‐group that impedes individuals' striving to improve. Two studies …

  • When What We Get Is Not What We Want

Ilka Helene Gleibs, Susanne Täuber et al.•ARTICLE•Social Psychology•2013•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 40

By integrating an intergroup perspective on mergers with discrepancy theories, we argue that merger partners aim for merger patterns that best benefit their group's standing. Importantly, we hypothesize and show that the discrepancy between what merger partners want and what they actually get affects outcomes essential to merger success. Specifically, we demonstrate that perceived fit between the implemented and the desired merger pattern predict…

  • When High Group Status Becomes a Burden

    Susanne Täuber, Esther Van Leeuwen•ARTICLE•Social Psychology•2012•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 22

The present paper investigates the strategic motives that guide the quest for outgroup resources. Resources can be retrieved through spying and requesting help. Whereas both methods are means of obtaining valued resources from the outgroup, spying secures the ingroup's public image, while requesting help potentially damages this image by displaying the ingroup as incompetent and dependent. Two experiments (N = 99 and N = 99) supported the predict…

  • Newcomer Conformity

    Susanne Täuber, Kai Sassenberg•ARTICLE•Social Psychology•2012•Referencias: 37

The present research is the first to examine the impact of self-construal on newcomers' motivation to conform with the goals of a novel group. We argue that when social identity (i.e., individuals' concern for a specific group) has not yet been developed, newcomers rely on self-construal (i.e., individuals' chronic concern for ingroups and connectedness with others in general) to derive norms for group-serving vs. self-serving behavior. Results o…
