Ready, set, action! Preservice preschool teachers’ journey from preparation to implementation of literacy activities
This qualitative case study explores preservice teachers’ perceptions of readiness, instructional strategies, and implementation of early literacy activities. Data were collected through a short-form, open-ended questionnaire, lesson plans, and classroom observation notes during a 12-week internship program. Using Saldana’s (2013) open coding framework, we employed descriptive, thematic, and cross-case analyses to provide a comprehensive understa…
Family-engaged literacy practices in early childhood
Parental involvement is vital in supporting language and literacy development during early childhood. In this context, home-based shared book reading offers a powerful means to foster children’s emerging skills while strengthening parent–child relationships. This scoping review maps and synthesizes 24 peer-reviewed studies conducted in Türkiye between 2007 and 2024, focusing on interventions that engage parents in shared book reading practices wi…
An up-close view of reading and writing activities in preschools
This study examines the critical role of reading and writing activities in urban preschool classrooms with ethnically and linguistically diverse students by analyzing how literacy is positioned as both a core instructional tool and an integrated part of broader practices. Over the course of 10 weeks, literacy practices in five preschool classrooms were observed and analyzed using an open coding framework to identify patterns and themes. Findings …
Individual and Professional Factors Associated With Teacher Emotional Exhaustion, Stress, Coping, and Self‐Efficacy Across Four Nations
We surveyed 1223 teachers from Iran, Japan, Türkiye, and the US to examine the relations among individual and professional factors and teacher emotional exhaustion, stress, coping, and self‐efficacy. Teachers in all four countries reported high levels of stress, moderate levels of emotional exhaustion and coping, and moderate‐to‐high levels of self‐efficacy. Stress and coping emerged as the strongest predictors of both emotional exhaustion and at…
The role of read-alouds in preschoolers’ understanding of bullying
Bullying in preschool settings is a critical issue with long-term developmental implications, yet early intervention strategies remain underexplored. This study investigates the role of interactive read-aloud sessions featuring bullying-themed picture books in shaping preschoolers’ understanding of bullying and developing coping strategies. The study was conducted in four preschool classrooms in southern Türkiye. A total of 71 children (aged betw…
Reimagining Family Bonding in the Digital Age
As the fundamental unit of society, the family is undergoing a profound transformation due to digitalization, crises, natural disasters, and displacement. Disasters like earthquakes disrupt family structures and functions, necessitating the reconstruction of routines and relational dynamics. This study examines the impact of technology-enhanced reading practices on family life among those affected by the February 6, 2023, earthquakes in Kahramanm…
Drama‐Based Read‐Alouds in Preschool Classroom
Reading aloud to young children can positively impact their social and emotional development during preschool. However, further exploration is needed to determine how drama‐based read‐alouds (DBRAs) could enhance these benefits. In this sense, this study examined the effects of the DBRA intervention on preschoolers' social understanding, social problem‐solving skills, and peer relationships. Seventy preschool children aged between 52 and 72 month…
Gender in children's literature and kindergartener's responses to gender in interactive read‐alouds
The underrepresentation of women and the perpetuation of gender stereotypes in children's literature has long been a concern. This study examined the portrayal of women in children's picture books and the potential of interactive read‐alouds to promote gender equity in early childhood education, with the aim of shedding light on gender inequality. This study used critical discourse analysis, theoretically informed by Rosenblatt's transactional th…
