This chapter examines the issue of power in therapeutic relationships from a Foucauldian viewpoint. It deals with a summary statement of Michel Foucault’s approach to power and his analysis of surveillance. This article examines whether the way that PISA models item outcomes in mathematics affects the validity of its country rankings. As an alternative to PISA methodology, a two-parameter logistic model is applied to PISA mathematics item data from Italy and Spain for the year 2009. Is alcohol consumption good for you? Results from the 2005 Canadian Community Health Survey
Data from the Statistics Canada 2005 Canadian Community Health Survey is used to test the hypothesis that classification errors of the type noted by Fillmore et al. () could invalidate the statistical results on the effects of alcohol consumption on self-rated health and the incidence of heart disease and diabetes. Drug treatment and the achievement of paid employment
The aim of this article is to identify which aspects of drug treatment are most closely associated with recovering drug users’ ability to obtain paid employment. Based on a cohort study of 1033 individuals, this article reports on a logistic regression analysis of the factors associated with the achievement of paid employment 33 months after the initiation of treatment for drug dependency. Pre‐teenage Children's Experiences with Alcohol
This article reports on the drinking experiences and motivations of 77 pre‐teenage children. The main reason which the children gave for occasional or regular drinking was the pleasure which they derived both from the effects of the alcohol and from the social interaction which accompanied the activity. Several of the children claimed that they were partly motivated by boredom. Peer influence appeared to play a minor role as far as the recurrent …

This paper examines the case for locating care management in health centres. Two related arguments are advanced. Returns to scale to family size - who gains from high fertility
In this paper the hypothesis put forward by J. C. Caldwell in a number of recent articles, including one in this journal is tested, that there are social and economic increasing returns to scale to family size. Using two village samples of household data collected in Bangladesh in 1977, it is shown that there is a statistically significant inverse correlation between adjusted consumption of rice per head and family size.
