Rethinking Merit in Calvin's Doctrine of the Atonement
Joan Lockwood O'Donovan argues that the Reformation doctrine of grace entails a rejection of the proprietary anthropology of self‐owning individuals and its attendant notion of justice – what C. B. Macpherson termed the “theory of possessive individualism.” Although O'Donovan praises Calvin's anthropology and his account of law for its non‐proprietary dimensions, the classical Protestant doctrine of penal substitutionary atonement appears to upho…
Two Anxieties about Rights
This article examines the relationship between the work of Anglican political theologian Joan Lockwood O’Donovan and French Catholic political philosopher Pierre Manent, focusing on their respective rights-critical narratives of modern political liberalism. While both thinkers fault the natural rights tradition for relying on a false anthropology, they draw different conclusions about the relationship of natural rights to the political. O’Donovan…
Martin Luther's Critique of Supererogation
Recent decades have witnessed a surge of philosophical interest in the concept of supererogation. Although Martin Luther figures prominently in the historiography as a critic of supererogation, the particular nature of his critique and its place within his broader moral theology has been underexplored. This article offers a reconstruction of Luther's theological opposition to supererogation, demonstrating its tight connection to central elements …
Anchor Beams with Needles. An East Anglian Mystery
In central north Essex and central south Suffolk there are a number of houses dating from the fifteenth to seventeenth centuries with a form of anchor beam where, unlike those in Denmark and a number of north European countries, the protruding end is not reduced to a tenon that goes through a post, but passes through the wall undiminished with a long wedge, called here a needle, through its protruding end. These anchor beams are not attached to a…

The Carpentry of a Twelfth-Century Aisled Hall
Burmington Manor is a stone-walled aisled manor house with a timber arcade and timber posts for the central truss of the open hall. It also includes a high end first-floor chamber lit by a twelfth-century stone window. Its date has hitherto been uncertain, but has now been determined as 1194/5d. This was a little later than expected from its primitive carpentry. The main discovery from our further examination is that the central arcade posts are …
A Base Cruck Aisled Hall at Frobury Farmhouse, Kingsclere, Hampshire
The core of Frobury Farmhouse, Kingsclere, Hampshire, is an aisled base cruck open hall built in c.1334/5d (Bridge and Miles, "Tree-Ring Dates from Oxford" (2015), 107) with a crown-post roof and passing braces in the closed trusses. Above all this is a full set of rafters from a mid-thirteenth-century aisled hall that had passing braces on all the trusses, tree-ring dated to 1263–8d, probably the predecessor to the base cruck hall. The 1334/5d a…

Letters Written by Eminent Persons in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries
This three-volume compilation by the Oxford antiquary John Walker (1770–1831) consists mainly of manuscripts from the Bodleian Library and the Ashmolean Museum, but is significant because it contains the biographical notes on the 'lives of eminent men' furnished by John Aubrey (1626–97) to Anthony à Wood, who was at the time compiling his Athenae Oxonienses. Aubrey's subsequently famous Brief Lives were published for the first time in this 1813 w…

Poetic Realism, the German Novelle and the Legacy of German Idealist Aesthetics
Grillparzer's Der arme Spielmann exemplifies the truth that the nineteenth‐century German novella, although informed by the philosophical and cultural legacy of German idealist aesthetics, also embodies a narrative critique of it. The poetic realist novella in German should therefore be read in the context of German idealist aesthetics but never reduced to the terms which that aesthetics defines. This essay challenges, through a detailed analysis…

Baythorne Hall, a Raised-Aisled Hall in Birdbrook, Essex, and Its Relationship to Other Raised-Aisled Halls
Baythorne Hall is an isolated raised-aisled hall in north-west Essex, tree-ring dated to 1341, making it the earliest of the three raised-aisled halls that have been dated so far. Raised-aisled halls are buildings where the arcade posts are raised up on to a dropped tiebeam on the centre truss of the open hall, thus clearing the open hall of arcade posts. They are not the same as roof types that look like aisled structures raised up on to normal …
A tissue of truths
Drawing on some original research in the Diocese of Canterbury, this paper explores the vital role of the priest as the shaper of a congregational culture in which both spiritual and congregational growth can thrive. It examines the importance of understanding and articulating the ethos and mythos of a particular faith-community, that shared narrative from which values and perceptions intuitively arise and which gives a congregation its unique ch…
Deploying Orientalism in Culture and History
Deploying Orientalism in culture and history
The concept and study of orientalism in Western culture gained a changed understanding from Edward Said's now iconic 1978 book Orientalism. Especially in Germany, however, recent debate has moved beyond Said's definition ofthe phenomenon, highlighting the multiple forms of orientalism within the "West," the manifold presence of the "East" in the Western world, indeed the epistemological fragility of the ideas of "Occident" and "Orient" as such.Th…

The illegal movement of cash and bearer negotiable instruments
As part of global regulatory measures designed to minimise risks of money laundering and financing of terrorism, financial institutions and other designated businesses in most countries are required to report certain financial transactions to government regulators. This has increased the probability that transactions involving the proceeds of crime will be detected and reported officially. In order to avoid such detection, serious criminals may s…

Selective Exposure to Campaign Communication
This article explores two hypotheses about how voters encounter information during campaigns. According to the anticipated agreement hypothesis, people prefer to hear about candidates with whom they expect to agree. The “issue publics” hypothesis posits that voters choose to encounter information on issues they consider most important personally. We tested both hypotheses by distributing a multimedia CD offering extensive information about George…
An Enforcement Taxonomy of Regulatory Agencies
A variety of multivariate techniques were used to develop a taxonomy of regulatory agencies from the first comprehensive study of the disparate enforcement strategies employed by business regulatory agencies in one country. Seven types of agencies were identified: Conciliators, Benign Big Guns, Diagnostic Inspectorates, Detached Token Enforcers, Detached Modest Enforcers, Token Enforcers and Modest Enforcers. Agencies were distinguished primarily…

Measuring plagiarism
Student plagiarism in colleges and universities has become a controversial issue in recent years. A key problem has been the lack of reliable empirical data on the frequency, nature and extent of plagiarism in student assignments. The aim of the study described here was to provide this data. Patterns of plagiarism were tracked in two university business studies assignments involving over 500 students and over 1000 scripts. Turnitin software was u…
Wynter's Armourie
This article shows first that Wynter's Armourie in Essex definitely had a base-cruck truss when first built, and then outlines the three subsequent major stages of development of the house from a base-cruck open hall to its late seventeenth-century form. The house is listed as having a base-cruck truss but there was some uncertainty as the truss had been considerably altered in the late fourteenth or fifteenth century when the 'aisles' were heigh…

Late-Twelfth & Early-Thirteenth-Century Aisled Buildings
The earliest extant timber-framed buildings identified by dendrochronology cluster around the late twelfth and early thirteenth century. Evidence from archaeological excavations suggests that the late twelfth century represents the threshold when fully timber-framed buildings start to appear. Some clarification has resulted from the discovery that a number of buildings once thought to be earlier have timbers felled in the mid-thirteenth century. …

Why Are Prison Rates in England and Wales Higher Than in Australia
In 1986 the number of people in prisons per 100,000 of the population was much higher in England and Wales than Australia (93 compared to 70). This difference was not due to differences in crime rates nor the success of the police in apprehending offenders, but to the greater number of people (per capita) in England and Wales received into prison, both on remand and under sentence. Furthermore, in England and Wales, young adults were much more li…

The Moon-God on Coins of the Ḥaḍramaut
In 1937 the present writer published some new South Arabian copper coins, brought back from the Wādī Maifa'at in the Ḥaḍramaut by Miss Freya Stark, on which the Ḥaḍramī moon-god, Sīn, figured for the first time. These pieces, of various sizes and weights, had all the same types and legends. Parts were obliterated or missing, but a composite drawing (fig. 1), based on a comparison of all specimens, shows on the obverse the beardless male head, wea…

"Comments on Umberto Eco's Book "A Theory of Semiotics
Umberto Eco is a professor of semiotics at the University of Bologna, Italy, and the editor of a journal of semiotics. His ambitious book, A Theory of Semiotics [1], is the culmination of many years of research and publication in this field. Following unsuccessful attempts to update and to translate into English his previous writings (principally La struttura assente), Eco decided to write this text in English, for, as he states in the Preface, '…

One of the more interesting features of the history of Argentina and the evolution of that country's society is the mark made by the English-speaking settlers (the English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh, and, less so, the North Americans), especially in the fields of commerce, industry, agriculture, etc. dating back to the pioneers of the post-Independence period of the early nineteenth century.'
