Technical, methodological and theoretical problems in dichotic stimulation research
In 1954 Broadbent reported the results of an apparently simple experiment involving the presentation of a limited number of synchronized pairs of numbers, one to each ear. When a complete list had been presented, the subject was asked to say the numbers he had just heard (method of complete verbal report). This deceptively straightforward experiment has not only been replicated many times and generated a large amount of subsequent research, it ha…
The Repetition of Single Speech Sounds Under Delayed Auditory Feedback
Three experiments were carried out to determine the effect of delayed auditory feedback (DAF) on the rate of repetition of single speech sounds. Other variables investigated were variation in repetition rate among speech sounds under DAF, and the effect of the subject's sex on repetition rate. Subjects were found to repeat sounds significantly fewer times under DAF. There was no significant variation among sounds repeated under DAF, nor was there…
Level, Speed and Personality Factors in the Intellectual Performance of Young Children
S ummary . Part of Progressive Matrices (1947) and an Arithmetic test were administered with initial and final time limits to a group of 100 9‐year‐old pupils. It was shown that, as in previous studies, with university students, groups of subjects could be identified who were slow but accurate workers whose intellectual level was severely underestimated by imposed time limits. It was also shown that the same subjects tended to be handicapped by i…
The Relationship Between Level and Speed on Two Intelligence Tests
S ummary . A group of first year engineering students was given the Progressive Matrices (1947) with initial and final time limits; the Nufferno Level test, with a time limit; and an objective (mathematical) test with initial and final time limits. As in a previous study, the Matrices test revealed a slow‐working group which was handicapped by the time limit. On the Level test, this group completed fewer items within the time limit, but obtained …

A Further Study of Progressive Matrices (1947)
S ummary . Two groups of university students were allowed sixty minutes for Progressive Matrices (1947), indicating the point reached after forty minutes. One group began at item No. 1, the other group at item No. 21. Analysis of the data indicated that for about 13 per cent. of the sample, the score after forty minutes markedly underestimates the level the subject would be able to reach if given longer time. These subjects make few errors within…

Item Analysis of Progressive Matrices (1947)
S ummary . Item analyses of Progressive Matrices (1947) were carried out separately for two groups of university students. The results indicated that the test successfully discriminates within relatively homogeneous groups of high intelligence. It is suggested that the test could be improved by dropping some of the items, and turning it into a power test, rather than one measuring a combination of speed and power
