Ethical Conduct of Research with Migrants and Refugees
There is increasing consensus across communities, health and social care practitioners and researchers in Australia of the need for specific ethical guidelines for research with migrants and refugees. We aim to identify existing documents providing ethics guidance for research with people from migrant and refugee communities, to appraise their quality, synthesise recommendations and identify gaps where additional guidance is required. This system…
Co‐Creating Preconception Health Content for a Digital Resource for Women From Diverse Ethnic Backgrounds
INTRODUCTION: Planning pregnancy and optimal health prior to pregnancy can significantly reduce pregnancy complications and poor maternal health outcomes. Women from culturally and racially marginalised groups experience more unintended pregnancies, increased preconception risk factors and adverse pregnancy outcomes, including maternal and infant mortality, compared to native born Australians. Improving health literacy through culturally relevant…
Equity in the continuum of hypertension care
One in four individuals has hypertension, a major cardiovascular risk factor, with a higher burden among people of low socioeconomic status in Nepal. An equity audit can help identify gaps in the continuum of hypertension care (awareness, treatment and control) to guide the development of a tailored intervention towards the priority population. We analysed data sourced from the Nepal Demographic and Health Survey, 2022. We specifically chose wome…
Natural environment and gestational diabetes risk in Australia
High residential greenness may be associated with a lower risk of GDM, with potential differences by social factors. The increased GDM risk associated with high PM 2.5 was more pronounced in areas of socioeconomic disadvantage and in areas with high concentrations of non-European migrant women. NO 2 did not show a significant association with GDM risk. These findings suggest that geographically targeted interventions may help mitigate the risk of…
Translating epigenetics into antenatal care in Australia
The scientific field of epigenetics – and its social and ethical repercussions – has been met with a mixture of cautious optimism and scepticism from social scientists. While acknowledging the possibilities of contributing to a more biosocial account of health, critical scholars are concerned about how this knowledge could be used to intensify risk narratives for certain groups, particularly pregnant people. Drawing on in-depth qualitative interv…
Consumer‐Led Codesign of an Effective Online Consumer and Community Involvement Audit Tool
INTRODUCTION: There is evidence that consumer and community involvement (CCI) improves the quality and outcomes of health research. However, there is currently limited support for organisations to plan, implement and evaluate CCI activity. We aimed to codesign an audit tool that will enable organisations, researchers, community members and funders to measure the extent and nature of CCI in their respective settings. The tool was based on the West…

Digital platforms such as websites play an increasingly important role in supporting perinatal mental health, yet their reach, cultural responsiveness, and effectiveness among women of migrant backgrounds remain under-explored. This study aimed to understand how women from diverse migrant communities engage with five digital perinatal mental health resources and to identify factors influencing their access, engagement, and overall experiences. We…
Trends and determinants of adverse working conditions among employed women in Australia
Between 1996 and 2018, working conditions for a cohort of Australian women of reproductive age changed significantly. There was a notable decline in shift and night work, alongside a significant increase in long working hours. The results likely reflect a combination of modified working conditions, women's career transitions and changes in personal/caring responsibilities. The potential health implications of long working hours require careful mo…
Factors associated with unplanned pregnancy among Malaysian women of reproductive age
There is low contraceptive use in this sample, particularly among women who have had a history of unplanned pregnancy, with lack of access to contraception cited as the main driver. Mothers, as well as young women, in Malaysia may benefit from health promotion activities to further inform contraceptive counselling interventions to reduce the risk of subsequent unplanned pregnancies and improve pregnancy planning
It Empowers You to Empower Them”
The Northern Territory (NT) and Far North Queensland (FNQ) have a high proportion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women birthing who experience hyperglycaemia in pregnancy. A multi-component health systems intervention to improve antenatal and postpartum care in these regions for women with hyperglycaemia in pregnancy was implemented between 2016 and 2019. We explored health professional perspectives on the impact of the intervention on …
Care, choice, complexities
Navigating whether to prescribe hormone replacement therapy (HRT) requires that health practitioners approach a woman's individual life circumstances, and early menopause (EM) as a particularly intricate experience and condition. Drawing on qualitative interviews with 16 practitioners in Australia, this article examines the modalities of care that emerge in the nexus of EM and HRT. Early menopause emerges in participants' narratives as far from a…
Sexual and reproductive health education in Australia
Young people tend to have low levels of sexual health literacy. The aims of this work were to explore health professionals’ perspectives of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) education in Australia and what they considered should be the core components of SRH curriculum, particularly for Year 11 and 12 students. In September and October, 2021, health professionals (n = 12) with expertise in SRH, in Victoria, Australia participated in semi-struc…
Sexual and reproductive health education for young people in Victoria, Australia
Young people aged >15 years (Years 11 and 12 students) in Australia are unlikely to receive school-based sexual and reproductive health (SRH) education. The aims of this study were to gather the perspectives of young people regarding their experiences of school-based SRH education and explore what they considered should be the core components of this form of education for Years 11 and 12 students. A mixed-methods study involving an online survey …
Canadian healthcare workers’ mental health and health behaviours during the Covid-19 pandemic
Results demonstrate that the impacts of COVID-19 on HCWs' mental health and health behaviours were significant, and varied by sociodemographic characteristics (e.g., sex, age, income)
Educating young people to graduate school with the ability to protect their sexual and reproductive health
Many young people in Australia leave secondary school with little understanding of sexual and reproductive health (SRH). This study aims to describe Australian teachers’ experiences when providing SRH education, map their use of resources, and explore barriers and strategies to increase students’ skills and confidence to protect their SRH. Quantitative data were gathered via an online questionnaire (n = 189) before qualitative data were elicited …
Introducing and integrating perinatal mental health screening
BACKGROUND: Pregnancy is a time of increased risk for developing or re-experiencing mental illness. Perinatal mental health screening for all women is recommended in many national guidelines, but a number of systems-level and individual barriers often hinder policy implementation. These barriers result in missed opportunities for detection and early intervention and are likely to be experienced disproportionately by women from culturally and ling…
Using a Modified Delphi Approach and Nominal Group Technique for Organisational Priority Setting of Evidence-Based Interventions That Advance Women in Healthcare Leadership
With evidence and expert input, we established priorities for advancing women in healthcare leadership with a partnering healthcare organisation. This approach can be adapted in other settings, seeking to advance women in leadership
Perinatal Depression in Australian Women during the Covid-19 Pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted perinatal mental health globally. We determined the maternal factors and pandemic-related experiences associated with clinically significant perinatal (pregnant and post-partum) depressive symptoms in Australian women. Participants ( n = 2638; pregnant n = 1219, postnatal n = 1419) completed an online survey (August 2020 through February 2021) and self-reported on depression, social support, and COVID-19 related…
Empowerment for behaviour change through social connections
Women valued their health and had a holistic view that includes physical, mental and social dimensions. Women viewed social connections with others as an opportunity to be listened to and to gain support that empowers behaviour change. Future interventions to promote behaviour change in preconception women should consider the importance all women placed on social connections and leverage off existing resources to connect women
Covid-19 Is Not the Flu
Background: COVID-19 has caused a global public health emergency. Government mitigation strategies included a series of behavior-based prevention policies that had a likely impact on the spread of other contagious respiratory illnesses, such as seasonal influenza. Our aim was to explore how 2019–2020 influenza tracked onto COVID-19 pandemic and its mitigation methods. Materials and Methods: We linked the WHO FluNet database and COVID-19 confirmed…

Primary Health Care for Aboriginal Australian Women in Remote Communities after a Pregnancy with Hyperglycaemia
High rates of dysglycaemia among women screened for T2D after GDM in the 12 month postpartum period highlight the need for increased screening and early intervention to prevent the development of T2D and its complications. Whilst a clear strength was high postpartum attendance, many women did not attend health services for diabetes screening or management

My relationships have changed because I've changed
Early menopause (EM) or premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) can disrupt gendered and age-related expectations associated with perceived 'normative' biographies for young adult women, with implications for subjectivity and relationships. While previous qualitative research has concentrated on the impacts of EM/POI on biography and sense of self, in this article, we examine the enmeshment of personal relationships with the formation of early meno…

Abdominal obesity and other risk factors largely explain the high CRP in Indigenous Australians relative to the general population, but not gender differences
High concentrations of CRP in Indigenous participants were largely explained by other risk factors, in particular abdominal obesity. Irrespective of its independence as a risk factor, or its aetiological association with coronary heart disease (CHD), the high CRP levels in urban Indigenous women are likely to reflect increased vascular and metabolic risk. The significance of elevated CRP in Indigenous Australians should be investigated in future …
