  • Beppu Bay, Japan, as a candidate Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point for the Anthropocene series

    Open Access•Michinobu Kuwae, B Finney et al.•ARTICLE•The Anthropocene Review•2023•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 29

For assessment of the potential of the Beppu Bay sediments as a Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) candidate for the Anthropocene, we have integrated datasets of 99 proxies. The datasets for the sequences date back 100 years for most proxy records and 1300 years for several records. The cumulative number of occurrences of the anthropogenic fingerprint reveal unprecedented increases above the base of the 1953 flood layer at 64.6 c…

Beppu Bay is located on east-central Kyushu, southwest Japan, and is characterized by hydrothermal activity, tectonic deformation, and recent volcanism under the influence of convergence of the Philippine Sea plate. This area, occupying the western portion of an arc-bisecting dextral fault system, is a tectonic depression that has existed since ca. 5 Ma. Sedimentary facies, mollusk assemblages, and radiocarbon ( 14 C) ages of 25 terrestrial plant…

  • Paleoenvironmental analysis of the Mawaki archaeological site, central Japan, in relation to the stratigraphic position of dolphin bones

Open Access•Yasuto Itoh, Keiji Takemura et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2011•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 1

In order to elucidate the paleoenvironment associated with the early Holocene Mawaki archaeological site on the Noto Peninsula of central Japan, a high‐resolution stratigraphic study was conducted of 17 boreholes drilled at the archaeological site. We selected three boreholes for which lithological and/or chronological data are reported. Initial magnetic susceptibility was utilized for correlation of clastic core samples with the assistance of 26…

  • Millennial-scale vegetation changes during the last 40,000 yr based on a pollen record from Lake Biwa, Japan

Open Access•Ryoma Hayashi, Hikaru Takahara et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2010

A high-resolution pollen record covering the last 40,000 yr (BIW95-4) from Lake Biwa, western Japan, shows regional vegetation responses to millennial-scale climate changes. From 40 to 30 ka, Cryptomeria japonica was dominant around the lake among pinaceous conifers and deciduous broad-leaved trees. During this period, fluctuations of C. japonica are correlated with Dansgaard–Oeschger (D–O) cycles recognized from the anhysteretic remanent magneti…

  • Holocene Evolution of the Outer Lake of Hwajinpo Lagoon On the Eastern Coast of Korea; Environmental Changes with Holocene Sea-Level Fluctuation of the East Sea (Sea of Japan)

    Open Access•Jong-Gwon Yum, Kang-Min Yu et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2004•Referencias: 11

The evolution of the outer lake of Hwajinpo Lagoon in Korea has been reconstructed using environmental proxies (lithologic, geochemical, and fossil data) with a chronology established using 7 accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon dates. Grain size, water content, and X-ray analyses from the core of outer coastal lakes (HJ99) were used to reconstruct sedimentary environments by using total organic carbon, C/N, S, and C/S chemical proxies…

  • AMS 14 C Dating of Varved Sediments from Lake Suigetsu, Central Japan and Atmospheric 14 C Change During the Late Pleistocene

Open Access•Hiroyuki Kitagawa, Hitoshi Fukuzawa et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1995•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 19

We made accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) 14 C measurements on terrestrial macrofossils from the Late Pleistocene/Holocene of the annually laminated sediments of Lake Suigetsu (central Japan). The AMS 14 C dates of terrestrial macrofossils showed agreement between varve counting years and calibrated ages (tree rings and U/Th on coral) in the interval of 10.5 and ca. 11.5 ka cal bp. Beyond 11.5 ka cal bp, the age difference between 14 C and varv…

  • A method for determination of volcanic glass concentrations in sedimentary sequences and its application to quaternary studies

    Open Access•Keiji Takemura, Tohru Danhara•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•1994

A method for determination of volcanic glass concentration in sedimentary sequences is presented. This method consists of two steps: (1) systematic extraction of volcanic glass particles from samples taken at close intervals in a sedimentary section, and the determination of their concentration; (2) precise measurement of the refractive indices of the separated glass particles. A recently developed measuring system (RIMS 86) based on the thermal …

  • Reinterpretation of Late Quaternary Sediment Chronology of Lake Biwa, Japan, from Correlation with Marine Glacial-Interglacial Cycles

    Open Access•Philip A Meyers, Keiji Takemura et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1993

A review of published stratigraphic records of pollen, sediment grain size, diatoms, and organic matter composition from Lake Biwa, Japan, identifies four pre-Holocene episodes of milder climate, increased surface runoff, and enhanced aquatic productivity, indicating intervals of warmer and wetter conditions which are interpreted as being interglacial. Correlation of these episodes to times of marine interglacial periods revises the age scale of …
