  • Validating DSGE Models Through SVARs Under Imperfect Information

Open Access•Paul Levine, Joseph Pearlman et al.•ARTICLE•Oxford Bulletin of Economics and…•2025

We study the ability of SVARs to match impulse responses of a well‐established DSGE model where the information of agents can be imperfect. We derive conditions for the solution of a linearized NK‐DSGE model to be invertible given this information set. In the absence of invertibility, an approximate measure is constructed. An SVAR is estimated using artificial data generated from the model and three forms of identification restrictions: zero, sig…

  • Growth and Welfare Effects of World Migration

Open Access•Paul Levine, Emanuela Lotti et al.•ARTICLE•Scottish Journal of Political…•2010•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 5

Using a two-bloc endogenous growth model calibrated to two generic sending and receiving countries of equal size, we assess the growth and welfare impact of world migration flows of different skill compositions. The sending country (East) has a lower total factor productivity and a lower endowment of skilled labour. Migration can induce two growth-enhancing effects: an efficiency effect from the more efficient use of labour in the receiving count…

  • Public Debt Maturity and Currency Crises

Open Access•Paul Levine, Alex Mandilaras et al.•ARTICLE•Scottish Journal of Political…•2008•Referencias: 1

The theory underlying the effect of debt structure on the probability of a currency crisis and the slope of the yield curve was developed in Benigno and Missale (2004). In this paper, we provide the empirical evidence to support their model's predictions. In a dynamic panel data framework, we produce generalized method of moments estimates that give substantial support to the hypothesis that the role of short‐term debt depends on how a devaluatio…

  • Arms Export Controls, Subsidies and the Wto Exemption

    Open Access•Maria Garcia-Alonso, María Del Carmen García‐Alonso et al.•ARTICLE•Scottish Journal of Political…•2005

Owing to the World Trade Organization (WTO) exemption that allows governments to subsidize arms exports, the arms trade is one of the few remaining areas of trade where we observe export subsidies. This paper examines the effect of arms controls, in the form of licensing delays, on the incentives to subsidize arms exports and conversely the effect of the WTO arms trade exemption on the incentives to break arms control agreements. Our main result …

  • Arms Export Controls and Proliferation

    Open Access•Paul Levine, Ron Smith•ARTICLE•Journal of Conflict Resolution•2000•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 11

Given that there are a relatively small number of suppliers of major weapons systems, control fo arms exports is possible, and there are a variety of regulatory regimes striving to achieve this. Controls can stabilize regional arms races and reduce tensions. However, when buyers can develop the capability to produce conventional or unconventional weapons, arms export controls can increase the incentive for proliferation. The authors discuss a gen…

  • The Choice of `Conservative' Bankers in Open Economies

David Currie, Paul Levine et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•1996•Citada por: 3

That governments should delegate the operation of monetary policy to independent central banks is widely advocated. For a closed economy the optimal choice results in a banker who is more conservative than the representative government, assigning a lower weight on output in her welfare function, but not over-conservative, thereby allowing monetary policy to adjust to shocks. However, for open economies the exchange rate externality results in an …

  • The Arms Trade and Arms Control

Paul Levine, Ron Smith•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•1995•Citada por: 8

This paper constructs a dynamic model of the arms trade in which there are a small number of suppliers who care about the profits from the trade and the security consequences of the sale; and a large number of interacting buyers who are concerned about their security relative to regional rivals. We derive the equilibrium under a number of assumptions about market structure. This model is then used to evaluate the benefits and sustainability of a …

  • Rules, Reputation and Macroeconomic Policy Coordination

Open Access•David Currie, Paul Levine•BOOK•Rules, Reputation and Macroeconomic…•1993

In this book David Currie and Paul Levine address a broad range of issues concerning the design and conduct of macroeconomic policy in open economies. Adopting neo-Keynesian models for which monetary and fiscal policy have short-term real effects, they analyse active stabilisation policies in both a single- and multi-country context. Questions addressed include: the merits of simple policy rules, policy design in the face of uncertainty and inter…
