Sargon II in the Mahidasht
The eastward expansion of Assyria, richly narrated in official inscriptions and supported by corollary materials such as letters from the royal correspondence and oracular enquiries, remains in archaeological terms hugely under-explored. Over the past few years, however, this has begun to change and a succession of recent discoveries is starting to give us an increasingly more detailed picture of the imprint of Assyrian rule in this sector of the…
Characterization of Two New York City Jewish Populations at Six Short Tandem Repeat Loci
The Hasidic and non-Hasidic Jewish communities of New York City represent two subpopulations with long-documented histories of restrictive marriage patterns and a high degree of endogamy. As part of a continuing study into their genetic structure, allele frequencies were determined for the six tetrameric short tandem repeat (STR) loci: FESFPS, F13AO1, vWA, CSF1PO, TPOX, and THO1. All loci were tested for Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) by three …

Alluvial Sequence in Central West Iran and Implications for Archaeological Survey
In an intermontane basin in central west Iran, centered on Kermānshāh (34°, 17′N; 47°, 07′ E), Late Pleistocene fan gravels lie below five alluvial units of Holocene age, which are separated by erosional disconformities and soils. These units, labelled I–V in order of increasing age, reflect changes in watershed conditions over a 10,000 year period. The chronology and genesis of these units proves to be of major importance for the interpretation …

Trade and Politics in Proto-Elamite Iran [and Comments and Reply]
During the Proto-Elamite period, 3300-2800 B.C., a political and economic hegemony seems to have arisen in the southwestern highlands of Iran. The power of this hegemony was derived from its control over the major trade routes between the Iranian plateau and Mesopotamia; its extent is defined by shared styles in ceramics, art, and architecture and by the use of a distincitive system of writing and recording. Proto-Elamite influence grew rapidly d…

Role of Labor Market Analysis in Man Power Mobilization
This country, perhaps for many years ahead, is deeply committed to a program designed to achieve national security and to safeguard the peace. Already the dimensions of this program are subjecting our national economy to substantial strains as we seek to increase defense production and control inflation. Civilian demands for goods and services are competing with defense requirements for materials and man power. Under these circumstances, the gove…
