  • Long-term unemployment subsidies and middle-aged disadvantaged workers’ health

Open Access•José Ignacio García Pérez, José Ignacio Garcia-Pérez et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Population Economics•2024•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 2

This paper examines the labour market and health effects of a non-contributory long-term unemployment (LTU) benefit targeted at middle-aged disadvantaged workers. To do so, we exploit a Spanish reform introduced in July 2012 that increased the age eligibility threshold to receive the benefit from 52 to 55. Our results show that men who were eligible for the benefit experience a reduction in injury hospitalisations by 12.9% as well as a 2 percenta…

  • Moral Hazard Versus Liquidity and the Optimal Timing of Unemployment Benefits

Open Access•Rodolfo G Campos, José Ignacio García Pérez et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2022

We develop a novel way of identifying the liquidity and moral hazard effects of unemployment insurance exclusively from how job-finding rates respond to unemployment benefits that vary over an unemployment spell. We derive a sufficient statistics formula for the dynamically optimal level of unemployment benefits based on these two effects. Using a regression kink design (RKD) that simultaneously exploits two kinks in the schedule of unemployment …

  • Can Fixed-term Contracts Put Low Skilled Youth on a Better Career Path? Evidence from Spain

    Open Access•José Ignacio García Pérez, J Ignacio García-Pérez et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2019•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 18

By reducing the commitment made by employers, fixed-term contracts can help low-skilled youth find a first job. However, the long-term impact of fixed-term contracts on these workers’ careers may be negative. Using Spanish social security data, we analyze the impact of a large liberalization in the regulation of fixed-term contracts in 1984. Using a cohort regression discontinuity design, we find that the reform raised the likelihood of male high…

  • On the welfare loss caused by inequality of opportunity

  • The Wage Gap between Foreign and Spanish Nationals in Spain

    Open Access•José Ignacio García Pérez, J Ignacio García‐Pérez et al.•ARTICLE•International Migration•2012•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 2

In this paper, we analyse wage differences between foreign and Spanish nationals in Spain. This analysis is relevant because Spain has witnessed a sharp increase in the proportion of foreign workers over the past decade. In our analysis, we explicitly account for unobserved heterogeneity at firm level, a situation which occurs when relevant covariates (for example, those connected to a specific firm's production process) are not included in the m…

  • Use Value of Food Plants in the Xi’iuy Indigenous Community of Las Guapas, Rayon, San Luis Potosi, Mexico

    Open Access•Haydeé Carbajal-Esquivel, Javier Fortanelli Martínez et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnobiology Letters•2012•Citada por: 1

Native communities’ erosion of ethnobotanical knowledge of food plants is a global concern. This investigation focuses on a Xi’iuy community in the Sierra Madre Oriental, San Luís Potosí, México. A total of 21 randomly-selected families participated (22% of the total population). The 56 people who were interviewed—an average of 2.7 per family-- were separated into four groups (fathers, mothers, single sons, single daughters). To investigate the u…
