Postgraduate students’ experience of a jointly-taught, distance learning degree
This paper reports the results of a primary data collection exercise conducted with postgraduate students enrolled at a large Russell Group university in the UK. The aim of this study was to gain insights of students’ experience of a jointly-taught, distance learning, part-time postgraduate programme. A mixed-methods approach involving an online survey and semi-structured interviews was adopted. The results show that students concentrated their p…
Combating Sexual Assault With the Military Ethic
This article explores sexual assault within the military by focusing on the role of norms and institutional culture. This article asserts that poor impulse control is, in part, at the root of sexual assault offenses. The 'military ethic,' however, provides a promising institutional means to stigmatize sexual assault and further acculturate service members into law-abiding norms. The military ethic exalts obedience and self-sacrifice. The military…
Jack the Ripper
The number of women murdered and mutilated by Jack the Ripper is impossible to know, although most researchers now agree on five individuals. These five canonical cases have been examined at length in Ripper literature, but other contemporary murders and attacks bearing strong resemblance to the gruesome Ripper slayings have received scant attention. These unsolved cases are the focus of this intriguing book. The volume devotes separate chapters …
Lessons learned from a generation of community-driven business retention and expansion programming
Business retention and expansion (BRE) can strengthen the economic and social fabrics of communities when led by a broad cross section of community leaders and supported by professionals skilled in BRE process techniques. This article explains lessons learned from a generation of broad-based BRE visitation initiatives facilitated by the University of Minnesota Extension. Two program improvements, their genesis, and outcomes are featured. The firs…

Food access and food deserts
Using data from a survey of residents living in a United States Department of Agriculture defined food desert in Duluth, Minnesota, this article examines the diverse ways that people living in a neighborhood without a grocery store feed themselves. We found that there is no singular experience of living in a food desert. Many neighborhood residents were highly mobile and shopped at a wide variety of local grocery stores, and a small group of neig…

Informal Production and Labour Market Segmentation
An industry is modeled in which entrepreneurs, who are heterogeneous in ability, may produce formally or informally. Two cases are distinguished, with and without labour market segmentation, for which different patterns of formal/informal supply obtain. Without segmentation, informality may generate production where otherwise there would be none. Typically, however, a trade-off obtains: when informality makes output higher it cuts the profit of t…
Computer Science is not Enough
Despite huge investment, and the best of intentions, most development projects fail. This is particularly true of Information and Communication Technology for Development (ICTD) projects. We contend that a significant contributor to this failure is the lack of breadth in project design and implementation, and in the training of project implementers. Successful ICTD interventions, in addition to being based on the best computer science research ha…

Commercial Activity as Insurance
We provide a new explanation for commercial activities by non‐profit organizations whose primary concern is to supply mission output. Starting from the observation that donations to individual non‐profits are often highly volatile, we show how investment in commercial activity can constitute a form of insurance for mission activity. Although investment in commercial activity has an opportunity cost in terms of capacity to produce mission output, …

Starting Strong
The present paper provides a brief overview of the early childhood education and care policy (ECEC) reviews of Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries, which began in late 1998 and continue into the present. It is hoped that reviews of 20 countries will be completedby end 2003. The experience of the reviews suggests that a deep-rooted division between care and education continues to delay significant investment in c…

Salt Pans' at the Kincaid Site
In Vol. VI, No. 1, of American Antiquity is a communication by Charles Fairbanks discussing the occurrence of the 'salt pan' type of vessel in his early Middle Mississippi horizon (Macon Plateau) at the Ocmulgee National Monument. These specimens show some variety of manufacture and surface treatment, namely, coiling, fabric marking, leaf marking, and complicated stamping. Fairbanks contrasts this variety of handling with the relatively consisten…

Supporting family responsibility for the rights of the child
Supporting family responsibility for the rights of the child: an educational viewpoint JOHN BENNETT1 UNESCO, 7 Place de Fontinoy, 75700 Paris, France There is no such thing as society. There are individual men and women, and there are families. Margaret Thatcher Introduction In discussions about the Convention on the Rights of the Child, it is cor- rectly assumed that States Parties to the Convention have the primary responsibility for ensuring t…
The Innovative Potential of American-Educated Japanese
The overseas scholar who returns to his home country is the epitome of the innovator: he has been sent abroad to acquire new knowledge, and he is expected to make use of this knowledge in contributing to change in his home society. However, in our study of Japanese educated abroad, we found that an overseas education did not automatically qualify the returnee for an innovative role. Depending upon the nature of his sponsorship, the returned stude…
A Note on Middle Mississippi Architecture
In Dr. Philip Phillips' recent paper, “Middle American Influences on the Archaeology of the Southeastern United States,” there appears the following statement concerning the architecture of late cultures associated with the Mississippi pattern: Of house types and methods of construction generally, little is known. Most indications point to a simple rectangular single-roomed type of dwelling witliout specialized entrance or other features. Larger …

W. B. Nickerson. Pioneer in Scientific Archaeology
In recent years there has been a lamentable tendency on the part of academic archaeologists to professionalize their field, with a consequently growing distinction between “amateurs” and “professionals.” That this distinction is a false one has been demonstrated by the work of such “amateurs” as Lemley of Arkansas, Langford of Illinois, and many others. The boundary between these two classes of excavators has been one of attachment or non-attachm…

Hopewellian in Minnesota
The recent synthesis of Minnesota archaeology by Wilford has revealed the presence of Hopewellian-like materials in the northern part of the state. These seem thoroughly blended with 'Lake Michigan' Woodland traits and may represent the feathering out of the Hopewellian complex and its integration into existing Woodland manifestations.None of the 'spectacular' Hopewellian traits are present in the Laurel and Arvilla foci, however, and it is doubt…
