  • A Reevaluation of the Marmes Rockshelter Radiocarbon Chronology

    John C Sheppard, Peter E Wigand et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1987•Citada por: 11•Referencias: 1

Twenty years ago excavation began on Marmes Rockshelter at the mouth of the Palouse River in southeastern Washington. Radiocarbon determinations from cave and adjacent floodplain sediments indicated an established pattern of human use by 10,800 B.P. However, a scarcity of dates between 6000 and 1300 B.P. suggested that either these strata were undated or the cave was unused. Examination of all Marmes radiocarbon ages showed agreement between shel…

  • Radiocarbon Studies of Latest Pleistocene and Holocene Lava Flows of the Snake River Plain, Idaho

    Open Access•Mel A Kuntz, Elliott C Spiker et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1986

Latest Pleistocene-Holocene basaltic lava fields of the Snake River Plain, Idaho, have been dated by the radiocarbon method. Backhoe excavations beneath lava flows typically yielded carbon-bearing, charred eolian sediment. This material provided most of the samples for this study; the sediment typically contains less than 0.2% carbon. Charcoal fragments were obtained from tree molds but only from a few backhoe excavations. Contamination of the ch…

  • Deglaciation and Postglacial Timberline in the San Juan Mountains, Colorado

    Open Access•PAUL E CARRARA, W N Mode et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1984

Lake Emma, which no longer exists because of a mining accident, was a tarn in a south-facing cirque near the headwaters of the Animas River in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado. During the Pinedale glaciation, this area was covered by a large transection glacier centered over the Lake Emma region. Three radiocarbon dates on basal organic sediment from Lake Emma indicate that by ca. 15,000 yr B.P. this glacier, one of the largest in …

  • Reinterpretation of the Exposed Record of the Last two Cycles of Lake Bonneville, Western United States

    Open Access•William E Scott, William D McCoy et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1983

A substantially modified history of the last two cycles of Lake Bonneville is proposed. The Bonneville lake cycle began prior to 26,000 yr B.P.; the lake reached the Bonneville shoreline about 16,000 yr B.P. Poor dating control limits our knowledge of the timing of subsequent events. Lake level was maintained at the Bonneville shoreline until about 15,000 yr B.P., or somewhat later, when catastrophic downcutting of the outlet caused a rapid drop …

  • Age of the Last Major Scabland Flood of the Columbia Plateau in Eastern Washington

Open Access•Donal Ray Mullineaux, Ray E Wilcox et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1978

Pumice layers of set S from Mount St. Helens can be correlated with certain ash beds associated with young flood deposits of the channeled scabland. The correlation points to an age of about 13,000 14 C yr B.P. for the last major flood to have crossed the scabland. Until recently, the last major episode of flooding was thought to be closer to 20,000 yr B.P., an age inferred chiefly from the relation of the flood to glacial events of the northern …

  • Radiocarbon Dates for Lava Flows from Northeast Rift Zone of Mauna Loa Volcano, Hilo 7 1/2’ Quadrangle, Island of Hawaii

    Open Access•J M Buchanan-Banks, J P Lockwood et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1989•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 3

Twenty-eight 14 C analyses are reported for carbonized roots and other plant material collected from beneath 15 prehistoric lava flows erupted from the northeast rift zone (NERZ) of Mauna Loa Volcano (ML) utilizing the recovery techniques of Lockwood and Lipman (1980). Most samples were collected from the Hilo 7 1/2’ quadrangle during field work for a geologic map of that quadrangle (Buchanan-Banks, unpub data); a few sample sites are located in …

  • Radiocarbon Dates for Lava Flows and Pyroclastic Deposits on São Miguel, Azores

    Open Access•Richard B Moore, Meyer Rubin•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1991•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 7

We report 63 new radiocarbon analyses of samples from São Miguel, the largest (ca 62 × 13km) and most populous (ca 150,000 inhabitants) island in the Azores archipelago (Fig 1). The samples are mainly carbonized tree roots and other plant material collected from beneath 20 mafic lava flows and spatter deposits and from within and beneath 42 trachytic pyroclastic flow, pyroclastic surge, mudflow, pumice-fall, and lacustrine deposits and lava flows…

  • Dissolved Organic and Inorganic 14 C Concentrations and Ages for Coastal Plain Aquifers in Southern Maryland

    Open Access•C B Purdy, G S Burr et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1992•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 19

The Aquia (Paleocene) and Magothy (Late Cretaceous) Formations of the Atlantic Coastal Plain represent two well-characterized (hydrodynamically and geochemically) aquifers in southern Maryland. 14 C measurements of the dissolved organic (DOC) and inorganic carbon (DIC) of Aquia and Magothy groundwaters have been made using accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). Both DI 14 C and DO 14 C concentrations in the initial flow path are unexpectedly low. A…
