Fall Ice Drift in Nares Strait, as Observed by Sideways-Looking Airborne Radar
From Sideways-Looking Airborne Radar (SLAR) imagery of sea ice obtained on three flights during the week of 19 to 26 Oct. 1976 it is possible to track floes throughout Nares Strait over periods of days and, on one occasion, hours. The data are interpreted in the light of available information on ice drift, winds, and currents. The results are believed to give a fairly typical picture of ice drift characteristics in periods of northerly air flow, …

Ice Regime and Ice Transport in Nares Strait
In order to assess the part played by ice export through the Canadian Arctic Archipelago in the heat budget of the Arctic Ocean, one of the factors that must be known is the length of time per year that the channels are sealed by fast ice. To establish this for Nares Strait, a series of flights was undertaken through the winters of 1970-71 and 1971-72. The resulting observations, combined with a search of historical records, suggest that the date…
Anton and Dmitriy
In the popular science journal Nauka i Zhizn' [Science and Life] , No 10,1969, there is an article by N. Bolotnikov on the two Russians who took part in Scott's last expedition, Anton Omel'chenko, stable-man, and Dmitriy “Geroff”, dog-driver, giving information on their lives before and after the expedition. Both these men are spoken of very warmly in Scott's journal. They appear to have been excellent fellows, who not only worked hard and devote…
The Geographical Position of the North Water
The name North Water was coined by 19th century whalers, who knew it only in the spring. The Eskimos of the Thule and Etah districts have known it as a winter phenomenon restricting sledge travel but offering good hunting conditions. The mean conditions for Mar-June can now be figured from air observations since 1954 and satellite pictures of 1966-68. The north limit is extremely stable: a fast-ice bridge in a convex curve across the narrow head …

The Arctic Frontier
This book is about the North as a frontier, and about Canada's relations with the world beyond that frontier. It is about the Arctic community of which Canada is one of the major members. Canadians have long been aware of the significance of their Atlantic and Pacific frontiers and of the implications of their Southern frontier.
Russian Settlement in the North, by Terence Armstrong
Canadian proposal for changes in WMO sea ice terminology
The World Meteorological Organization International Ice Nomenclature, though it has not yet been officially published by the international agency, is in fact in general use in North America, and has been used by the Canadian ice reporting services since January 1962. As a result of this experience with the practical application of the terminology, and of a total of about ten years of operational ice reporting, Canadian users have compiled a list …
Ledovedeniye I Ledotekhnika (Ice Physics and Engineering), by I.S. Peschanskiy
The Drift of North Pole 7 After Its Abandonment
1523-1788, by Marthe Emmanuel
An Historical Evaluation of the Cook-Peary Controversy, by Russell W. Gibbons
Geographical Discovery and Exploration in the Queen Elizabeth Islands, by Andrew Taylor
Ice Islands
Contains discussion of eight air photographs (from the Danish Geodetic Institute) of three regions of northern Greenland: (1) Sherard Osborn and Victoria Fjords on the north coast; (2) Kronprins Christians Land and Independence Fjord on northwest coast; and (3) east coast 78 degrees-80 degrees North. The glacial ice shown in some areas is similar in appearance to the Ellesmere Ice Shelf, and it is suggested that in the recent geologic past, the s…
Arctic Ice Islands
Contains an account of the discovery of two groups of "ice islands" evidently originating on the north coast of Ellesmere Island. Their size, shape and surface structure, as well as tracking the drift of the large ice islands by planes and radar, are discussed by Major Koenig (from U.S.A.F. "Ptarmigan" and other flights), and by Squadron-Leader Greenaway (from Canadian flights and air photographs). Extensive documentation is presented (by Miss Du…
