  • Being Brothers, being keepers, being Kept

James Bissett Pratt•ARTICLE•Race Ethnicity and Education•2026

This article re-theorizes Malone and Ford’s (2023) account of Black male faculty navigating the tenure track by situating their experiences within broader formations of racialized institutional life, gendered being, and academic marketization. The article treats autoethnography as archive and analytic site, engaging these narratives as fragments that reveal how Black faculty life is constituted through ongoing forms of slow, affective, and episte…

  • The Pursuit of the Public Interest

James Bissett Pratt, Walter R Allen•ARTICLE•Journal of Criminal Justice…•2015

In US, the political leadership draws disproportionately from lawyers, thus it is important to understand the political perspectives of students attending law schools across the nation. This study examines these variations in and across race and ethnicity. We ask, “How are student aspirations for careers in public interest law and government and political positions related to race, ethnicity, and social and political ideology?” Data for the study…

  • Experience as a Barrier to Contestability in Airline Markets

Samuel Baker, Samuel H Baker et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•1989

Contrary to one of the predictions of the contestability hypothesis, price in deregulated U.S. passenger airline markets is related to actual competition from diversifying former intrastates and newly established carriers. More important, former intrastates have a larger impact on price than do newly established firms--a result consistent with these markets being imperfectly competitive because of an industry experience barrier to entry. Unlike a…

  • God and the Moral Law

    Open Access•James Bissett Pratt•ARTICLE•Harvard Theological Review•1936

The subject for our annual conference this year — Ethics and Theology — forces us to face one of the most difficult problems of religious thought, — the relation between God and morality. To this problem several solutions — all quite familiar — have been proposed and it will not be the purpose of my paper to suggest a new one of my own. In fact, as the sequel will show, I am very uncertain whether any completely satisfactory solution to the probl…

  • The Psychology of Religion

    Open Access•James Bissett Pratt•ARTICLE•Harvard Theological Review•1908

As every one knows, psychology is a word to conjure with. We have today the Psychology of Art, the Psychology of Business, the Psychology of Advertising, the Psychology of Childhood, of Adolescence, and of Old Age, the Psychology of various great men and of various centuries and epochs, until one stands quite aghast at the psychological insight of our times, and feels that the key to everything and anything worth knowing must surely be in the han…

  • The Subconscious and Religion

    Open Access•James Bissett Pratt•ARTICLE•Harvard Theological Review•1913

There is no subject about which popular psychology just now has so much to say as the “subconscious.” Since the name came into wide use a dozen years ago, it has come to be regarded as something so definite and well understood as to be itself the explanation of many other things. Its bearing upon questions of religious experience has been particularly emphasized, and, in fact, it is largely on this account that it has aroused so much popular inte…

  • Some Psychological Aspects of the Belief in Immortality

    Open Access•James Bissett Pratt•ARTICLE•Harvard Theological Review•1919

The individual's attitude toward the Determiner of Destiny, which is religion, has always an essentially practical coloring. It involves a belief, to be sure, but this belief is never a matter of pure theory; it bears a reference, more or less explicit, to the fate of the individual's values. Hence in nearly every religion which history has studied or anthropology discovered, the question of the future in store for the individual believer has bee…

  • Natural Religion; Consciousness and its Implications

    Open Access•James Bissett Pratt•ARTICLE•Harvard Theological Review•1923

Eighteen years ago, when Emerson Hall was nearing its completion, the motto chosen for its portal was that insistent query of the psalmist, “What is man that Thou art mindful of him?” No words could have been more appropriate for a building devoted to philosophy and psychology; and if we knew the answer to the question they propound we should have at least the key to the more fundamental problems of Natural Religion
