In this article, we explore the origins, properties, and ritual uses of a series of psychoactive substances among indigenous peoples of the Upper Rio Negro. Setting out from the mythical genesis of tobacco, coca, paricá, and caapi (ayahuasca), we examine the relationship between these substances and diverse aspects of female bodies and their reproductive powers, suggesting that these psychoactives can be conceived as pharmaka in the classic sense…

Unresolved Cases of Homicide
We review the literature on the general solvability of homicides to learn if characteristics pertaining to the victim, the event and the investigating agency may help predict which unresolved or ‘cold’ cases are likely to be ultimately resolved. We utilize two definitions of when a case becomes ‘cold,’ the conventional or Traditional (unresolved after a year) and the Alternate (unresolved after 30 days). This article provides a case study analysis of social reactions to the murder of Fusilier Lee Rigby in 2013.
