Enough of Experts
Enough of Experts: Expert Authority in Crisis analyses the challenges and threats to expert authority in neoliberal political economies and societies. It focuses upon the deep-seated political, economic, social and cultural transformations which have fundamentally destabilized and eroded the institutional foundations of expert authority over more than four decades. The book critically assesses the orthodox or ‘received’ model of expert authority …
Sociology of organizations in the twenty-first century
This review article analyses six texts within the sociology of organizations published in the early decades of the twenty-first century with a view to exploring what they tell us about the key issues and developmental trajectories the former will follow as this century unfolds. It suggests that the sociology of organizations is in good intellectual shape and continues to speak to issues which are central to our lives today and tomorrow. However, …
Anterior Insula Activation During Cardiac Interoception Relates to Depressive Symptom Severity in HIV-Positive and HIV-Negative Postmenopausal Women
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine whether subclinical symptoms of depression in postmenopausal women are associated with blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) activity within the anterior insula during cardiac interoceptive awareness and whether this association differs for persons living with the human immunodeficiency virus (PWH). METHOD: Twenty-three postmenopausal (mean [standard deviation] age = 56.5 [4.8] years) and 27 HIV-negative wom…

Bureaucratic Theory and Intellectual Renewal in Contemporary Organization Studies
This article aims to revisit the classical body of theoretical and empirical work on the dynamics of bureaucratic power and control and to reassess its significance for the intellectual renewal and regeneration of contemporary organization studies. First, it examines the strategic sociological, political, and ethical issues that these works were responding to during a historical period of deep-seated structural changes—that is the period between …
Knowledge, Higher Education, and the New Managerialism
The nature of Higher Education in the UK has changed over the last three decades. Academics can no longer be said to carry out their work in ‘ivory towers’, as increasing government intervention and a growing ‘target culture’ has changed the way they work. Increasingly universities have transformed from ‘communities of scholars’ to ‘workplaces’. The organization and administration of universities has seen a corresponding prevalence of ideas and s…
Beyond the Iron Cage? Bureaucracy and Democracy in the Knowledge Economy and Society
The imminent collapse of bureaucracy has been anticipated many times throughout the history of modern social and political theory. On both the right and the left of the ideological and intellectual spectrum, bureaucratic organization has been generally viewed as, at best, a necessary evil that will inevitably fade away as the ‘progressive democratic dynamic’ inherent in historical change imposes itself on the logic and trajectory of socioeconomi…

The Sociology of Organizations
This text focuses on recent debates about the contribution which complex organizations have made to the transition from traditional to modern society, locating these debates in the historical context provided by recurring themes concerning the relationship between the individual and society. Building on this thematic and historical basis, the author moves on to examine contemporary theoretical schools of thought and the research programmes which …

The Landscape of Britain
The landscape of Britain has an extraordinarily rich historical density and this lavishly illustrated book explores some of the principal themes in its history. The landscape of today is the product both of natural geological processes and of some 10,000 years of human habitation. Professor Michael Reed looks at the main factors at work in its evolution and examines the evidence that enables us to recreate landscapes of the past. Britain's landsc…

Scripting Scenarios for a New Organisation Theory and Practice
Subjective well-being and psychological distress
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the subjective well-being and psychological distress of kibbutz members representing three-generational strata. A total of 166 male and female Israeli kibbutz members completed the Mental Health Inventory (Veit & Ware, 1983) and reported on their self-evaluation of social position and of involvement in kibbutz life. Analysis of the data revealed the following: Second-generation kibbutz members r…
Discovering Past Landscapes
Anti‐black attitudes, religious orthodoxy, permissiveness, and sexual information
The purpose of this study was to evaluate three sets of predictors of attitudes toward homosexuality: (a) anti‐black and orthodox religious attitudes, (b) sexual permissiveness, and (c) the effect of an introductory human sexuality course. Significantly more positive attitudes were expected for those holding more positive attitudes toward blacks and those who were more sexually permissive. A negative relationship was expected for those holding or…
Pre-Parliamentary enclosure in the East Midlands, 1550–1750, and its impact upon the landscape
Attitudes of heterosexuals toward homosexuality
This article reports on three phases of the development of a Likert‐type scale measuring heterosexual attitudes toward homosexuality. Phase 1 describes the development of the scale. Item analysis yielded 20 statements with item‐total correlations ranging from .57 to .74. In Phase 2 the 20‐item Heterosexual Attitudes Toward Homosexuality (HATH) Scale was administered to 82 subjects. Analysis yielded a corrected split‐half correlation of .92, and t…
