  • Type of Marriage Ceremony as a Carryover in Acculturation of Mexicans in the United States

    A study of 4,750 marriages in Santa Clara County, California, which occurred between 1908 and 1968, and all of which involved participants of Mexican descent, demonstrated a carryover from Mexican to American culture. The character used as a test was the tendency of MexicanAmericans to seek civil rather than religious officiation at the marriage ceremony. That this tendency is derived from the Mexican cultural complex is shown by the facts that, …

    The data contained in the paper by Munson, Parmalee, and Yamell (1971) concerning the Scovill site in Illinois have been employed for the purpose of examining the demographic and dietary status of the inhabitants. It is calculated from the meat residues found by the authors that this source of food would have supplied 181,800 g of animal protein, and from the residues of nuts that this type of plant supplied 1,588,000 Calories.     A study of the documentary sources makes it possible to arrive at an approximate assessment of the demographic damage suffered by the native population during the Indian wars of the seventeenth century in New England. There were three periods of intense military effort, the Pequot War, 1634, the Dutch War, 1643, and King Philip's War, 1675-1676.
