  • VNTR DNA variation in the population of the island of Hvar, Croatia

Open Access•I Martinović, Sarabjit Mastana et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1998

The aim of this study was to investigate hypervariable DNA polymorphisms in the Croatian population. Two VNTR loci, D7S22 and D12S11, were studied in a sample of 68 inhabitants of the western and eastern regions of the island of Hvar. Binned allele frequencies and heterozygosity were calculated for the two regions and measures of genetic kinship and genetic distance were computed between the two regions and between each of these regions and nine …

  • Epilogue — Demography and anthropology

    Open Access•D F Roberts•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1996

As a conclusion, this paper reviews briefly the content of the volume. The wealth of demographic data has not been adequately exploited in anthropology; this is why this publication is valuable in showing attempts to apply demographic data in a variety of anthropological problems. This symposium has explored many interesting points which we recall here. Yet it has also opened up a whole range of further questions on the material presented as well…

  • Secular trends in growth and maturation in British girls

    Open Access•D F Roberts•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•1994

Over a period of 28 years, a succession of cross‐sectional surveys was carried out on young women entering the University College of Swansea (1959–1970) and then the University of Warwick (1971–1986) each year. Recall data on age at menarche and measurements of stature provide an indication of secular trends in growth and maturation in this section of the population of Britain. The earlier trend to younger age at menarche came to an end in girls …

  • Khmers of Cambodia

Open Access•S S Papiha, Sarabjit Mastana et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•1994

A sample of the Khmer population from Cambodia has been examined for 30 single‐gene characters (10 blood groups and 20 serum and red cell systems). A locus‐by‐locus comparison suggests that the Khmers differ significantly in several systems from the populations of Eastern India and China. There is remarkable heterogeneity among their geographical neighbors. To elucidate the genetic relationship of the Khmer, genetic data were collected from vario…

  • Menarcheal age in University of Warwick young women

    Open Access•T C Dann, D F Roberts•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•1993

Data from the final 16 years of a 28-year ongoing survey of menarcheal age are reported. From 1971 onwards, recalled aged at menarche was recorded for all young women entering the University of Warwick. These data show that mean menarcheal age is increasing, a trend which is independent of father's occupation, family size, position of girl in the family, and physique. This continues a similar upward tendency noted in a preceding study in Swansea.…

  • Population structure of the Island of Korcula, Croatia

    Open Access•Branka Janićijević, D F Roberts et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•1993

Serogenetic data on 16 systems and migration data from birthplaces of parent and offspring, collected from 949 inhabitants of 8 vilages on the island of Korcula in the eastern Adriatic (Croatia), were analysed. Geographic distance is not a strong determinant of the population structure on the island. The pattern of the genetic variation now observed derives mainly from history and migration behavior. © 1993 Wiley‐Liss, Inc

  • HLA frequencies in Basques in Spain and in neighbouring populations

Open Access•Rosario Calderón, John Wentzel et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1993

HLA antigen and gene frequencies at the A, B, and C loci are examined in a sample of 181 Basques and 102 non-Basques in Bilbao, Spain. The most common associations of genes at the A and B loci are as in western Europe generally. The results are compared with gene frequencies in other Basque and non-Basque samples in Spain and France. There is clear distinction in gene frequency between Basques and non-Basques, to which the greatest contribution i…

This lecture draws to the attention of human biologists the opportunities that are available for their participation in international research programmes. Relevant past and present research programmes of the International Union of Biological Sciences are described, together with the larger programmes of the human genome initiative, and the international geosphere biosphere programme on global change of the International Council of Scientific Unio…

  • Social class and diachronic trends in physique in young university women

    Open Access•D F Roberts, T C Dann•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•1992

In a large sample of female students admitted to the University of Warwick in the period 1971–86, physique as measured by height, weight and ponderal index was examined in relation to family variables and socioeconomic class. Stature and weight both show a secular tendency to increase, and there is no indication of any slowing of rate. The different social classes do not participate equally in these trends, in a way that is difficult to reconcile…

  • Genetic variation in Brac, Croatia

Open Access•D F Roberts, Zaswiza Mohamad Noor et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1992

A serological survey of the Dalmatian island of Brac (Croatia), based on a total sample of 747 subjects, shows considerable local genetic variation. While the overall gene frequencies are much as expected from the island's geographical position, the local genetic heterogeneity is made up of differences between the inland and coastal villages, differences between the two coastal areas, and variation among the older inland villages. This heterogene…

  • Population variation in molecular polymorphisms of the short arm of the human X chromosome

Open Access•S S Papiha, Sarabjit Mastana et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1991

Five DNA probes (RC8, 754, XJ 1‐1, pert 87.8, and L1.28) from the short arm of the human X chromosome were investigated in samples from five populations (English, Nigerian, Chinese, Muslim, and Hindu from India). The variation in the allele frequencies of several probes between different groups was significant. The average heterozygosity in females of the five populations ranged from 32% to 51%. The genetic distance between the five groups was co…

  • Digital dermatoglyphic fields in the Irish

Open Access•D F Roberts, Megan Greally•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•1991

Analysis of digital dermatoglyphics from a large sample of Irish identifies principal components very similar to those in other United Kingdom samples, both in the eigenvalues and eigenvector distributions. These are interpreted as representing mathematical abstractions of developmental morphogenetic gradients in the embryonic handplate. Apart from the first component representing general size of ridge counts, the second depicts the contrast betw…

  • A study of digital dermatoglyphics in Ireland

    Open Access•Megan Greally, M G Greally et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1991

Handprints obtained from 600 Irish subjects (274 males and 326 females), drawn from all counties of Ireland, were analysed. There was no clear evidence of any differences between the four great provinces of Ireland, nor between east and west, such as were shown by comprehensive blood group data, and it is concluded that Ireland can be regarded as dermatoglyphically homogeneous. Comparisons of the Irish quantitative and qualitative digital dermato…

    Open Access•Jerry S Lanchbury, S S Papiha et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1990

Phenotype and gene frequencies of polymorphic systems in blood specimens from 796 donors in Northumberland and Durham (north-east England) were analysed according to region of residence. Significant differences exist among the five geographically defined subpopulations, and it is argued that these derive from patterns of historical settlement

  • Genetic affinities of the Shetland Islanders

    Open Access•D F Roberts•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1990

Phenotype and gene frequencies in blood group, red cell enzyme, and serum protein polymorphisms in a sample of Shetland islanders are reported. Analyses of genetic distance and relationship indicate that Shetland affinities are closer to nearby populations bordering the North Sea rather than to those of the North Atlantic. The closest affinities seem to be with populations in north Britain with a similar history of Norse influence. There is evide…

  • Gene frequencies of Gc and PGM subtypes

    Open Access•I White, S S Papiha et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1989

Allele frequencies are presented for subtypes of phosphoglucomutase locus 1 and the group-specific component (Gc) in samples from a number of human populations. Compared with each other and with published data, continental samples are very similar in gene frequency to their reported distributions in the literature, but the small island populations are much more variable

  • Migration within the island of Korčula, Yugoslavia

Open Access•Anita Sujoldžić, Verica Jovanović et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1989

For several centuries the village populations on the Yugoslav island of Korcula have remained essentially isolated from each other and from the mainland. Historical, linguistic and biological data indicate that systematic population pressure predominantly came from the coastal area of the Balkan peninsula westward onto the island. To examine short and long range migration on the island, data on the place of birth of parents of adult inhabitants (…

    Open Access•D F Roberts•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1966•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 4

Physical anthropology in the U.S.A. shows symptoms of a malaise giving cause for concern. It is argued that their origin does not lie in weakness in the subject, which elsewhere is more flourishing, like other life sciences, than it has ever been; nor in a lack of student interest; but in historical inertia. This affects the affiliation of the subject, undergraduate teaching, graduate training, and opportunities for professional practice

For the determination of the group‐specific component (Gc) and phosphoglucomutase (PGM 1 ) phenotypes, isoelectric focusing was performed on two samples, one of Jat Sikh of northwest India, the other of northeast English. The subtype frequencies of these two systems do not differentiate the two populations sampled. Synthesis of the existing data shows distinct PGM 1 and Gc subtype frequencies in various ethnic and racial groups. The anthropologic…

Marriage entries in the parish records of Whickham, near Newcastle in the North of England, are analyzed by isonomy. Over the three centuries (1566–1866), a period including the arrival of the industrial revolution in the region, secular changes occur in the level of inbreeding. There is a general relationship of inbreeding level with demographic change and particularly with socioeconomic pattern

  • Genetic analysis of multiple sclerosis in Orkney

    D F Roberts, Mark Roberts et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1979•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 9

In a family study of all patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) in Orkney, the number of inbred among patients, although high for Britain, is not higher than the number among controls, and the inbreeding coefficients appear to eliminate recessive involvement of rare genes from the aetiology. The kinship coefficients show that the ancestries of patients and controls are closely enmeshed, and eliminate from the aetiology involvement of recently intr…

From pedigree analysis of a sample of 214 Orcadians, inbreeding levels are high by comparison with limited dada for Britain. The mean inbreeding coefficient is 0.001834, with a zero baseline taken as 1750. There appears little secular change for subject born over the period 1879–1940. Local variations occur within Orkney, and possible reasons for these are suggested

  • A genetic survey in the Bhil tribe of Madhya Pradesh, Central India

    Open Access•S S Papiha, D F Roberts et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1978•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 21

Examination of blood groups, plasma proteins and red cell enzyme types (23 loci), in a sample of 145 Bhils, a tribal group of Madhya Pradesh, Central India, demonstrates their genetic uniqueness. They differ in a number of systems from the nearby nontribal groups both of Hindus and Muslims. The results suggest that the Bhil frequencies include vestiges of the ancestral genepool of a more widespread aboriginal population whose influence is detecta…
