  • America's Oldest Basketry

Open Access•Rainer Berger, Millie Bendat et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1997•Referencias: 4

We have determined the earliest calibrated dates on three types of basketry from the Great Basin of western North America. The oldest twined basketry dates to 10,380–10,918 cal bp, reed duck decoys to 2355–2773 cal bp, and wooden sandals of sagebrush bark or twined tule to 9247–10,375 cal bp and 9242–9836 cal bp, respectively

  • Studies on Selected Proteins of Bone in Archaeology

    Open Access•HARRY SOBEL, Rainer Berger•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1995•Referencias: 11

With the advent of AMS radiocarbon dating of very small samples, a much greater opportunity now exists for research into specialized materials. Investigations of the proteins of bone and teeth for archaeological purposes suggest that much more information might be obtained by appropriate study of individual proteins in these tissues. Although present research seems limited to 14 C dating, racemization and dietary selection, conditions of the envi…

  • Radiocarbon Ages of Lacustrine Deposits in Volcanic Sequences of the Lomas Coloradas Area, Socorro Island, Mexico

    Open Access•Jack D Farmer, Maria C Farmer et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1993•Referencias: 19

Extensive eruptions of alkalic basalt from low-elevation fissures and vents on the southern flank of the dormant volcano, Cerro Evermann, accompanied the most recent phase of volcanic activity on Socorro Island, and created the Lomas Coloradas, a broad, gently sloping terrain comprising the southern part of the island. We obtained 14 C ages of 4690 ± 270 BP (5000–5700 cal BP) and 5040 ± 460 BP (5300–6300 cal BP) from lacustrine deposits that occu…

  • Radiocarbon Dating of Anodonta in the Mojave River Basin

    Open Access•Rainer Berger, Norman Meek•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1992•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 8

A 450-year correction is required to make Anodonta 14 C dates comparable to 14 C dates on other materials in the Mojave River basin. The internal stratigraphic consistency of 34 conventional 14 C dates on Anodonta in this drainage basin indicates that such dates are usually reliable. The validity of most conventional 14 C dates in the Mojave River basin may be a product of the basin's crystalline bedrock in a region usually typified by thick Pale…

  • C Dating Mortar in Ireland

    Open Access•Rainer Berger•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1992•Citada por: 11•Referencias: 10

I have developed a method of dating early medieval Irish buildings using charcoal encased in mortar. Due to the inclement weather over centuries, timbers do not preserve well in these structures, leaving little suitable material for 14 C dating. Initially, several buildings of known age were analyzed to verify the mortar charcoal technique. Then, a series of buildings for which no definite architectural-historical dates existed, e.g., churches, h…

    Open Access•Rainer Berger, Reiner Protsch•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1989•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 12

The radiocarbon dates reported in this list are almost all based on collagen measurements from human archaeologic bone material. This collagen was isolated according to the methods developed by Berger, Horney and Libby (1964), Ho, Marcus and Berger (1969), Longin (1971) and Protsch (1973). All samples were counted as CO 2 gas at close to 1 atm in a 7.5L proportional counter with three energy channels. The 14 C dates reported are calculated with t…

    Open Access•Rainer Berger, T B Jackson et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1987•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 12

The measurements reported here are a continuation of tropospheric radiocarbon measurements in carbon dioxide carried out since 1961 at our China Lake, California collection facility. The data show a continued decrease in radiocarbon activity from ca 330‰ in 1977 to 215‰ in 1983 in agreement with similar analyses in Europe for the same time interval

  • Radiocarbon Concentration of California Aerosols

Open Access•Rainer Berger, David McJunkin et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1986•Referencias: 5

In this study the origin of the carbonaceous fraction of total suspended particles (TSP) in air was analyzed. While the summer data show increasing carbon concentrations in the Los Angeles air basin from west to east, in the winter high levels of carbon particles can be found over the coast. The smallest and most dangerous particle fraction is principally composed of fossil carbon

  • Radiocarbon Measurements of Particulates in Smog

    Open Access•Rainer Berger, R M Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1983•Referencias: 5

In recent years in California, smog aerosols have been observed in metropolitan and rural areas. We wondered what the relative contribution is from sources such as fossil fuel combustion (eg, cars, factories) and emissions from trees and other plants. Pollution produced by fossil fuel combustion can be distinguished from biological sources using radioactive carbon. Carbon in fossil organic materials is radioactively dead whereas carbon in living …

  • Direct Bone Dating in a Small CO 2 Counter

    Open Access•Rainer Berger•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1983•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 6

A small 200ml capacity CO 2 proportional counting system has been developed which uses only 100mg of carbon for complete filling. Thus, with respect to the small quantities needed, it compares favorably to dedicated accelerators at significantly lower cost. The performance of this equipment is demonstrated using a variety of samples including some human bone fragments from La Jolla which had been estimated to be 28,000 years old by aspartic acid …

One of the most widely-known narratives contained in Judaeo-Christian literature is that of 'Noah's Ark and the Great Flood'. The version best known to most English readers is derived from the translation of Genesis VI-VIII contained in the 1611 King James Version of the Bible and its subsequent revisions. According to this account, near the end of the Biblical Deluge, the Ark rested 'upon the mountains of Ararat'. From this locality, according t…

Annually, thousands of shocks are registered on seismometers and many hundreds are actually noticed directly by Californians. In modern times, about one quake per year, destructive to property, has occurred, yet the very large and disastrous events approaching magnitude 8 and higher on the Richter scale are spaced a few decades apart: 1857 in Souther…

  • The date of 'Noah's Ark

    Open Access•R E Taylor, Rainer Berger•ARTICLE•Antiquity•1980•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 4

  • The Dating and Cultural Associations of the 'Potbellied' Sculptural Style

    Open Access•Arthur Demarest, Arthur A Demarest et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1982•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 3

For decades the 'potbellied' monuments have been the center of a controversy in Mesoamerican archaeology. These massive boulder sculptures have been found at numerous sites associated with the major culture-historical problems of the Preclassic period in southern Mesoamerica. A secure dating of the style has not been possible and there have been several conflicting interpretations of their age and significance. One interpretation holds that some …

  • Ucla Radiocarbon Dates X

    Open Access•Rainer Berger, Jonathon Ericson•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1983•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 4

The measurements reported in this date list form the chronometric framework for obsidian hydration and trade studies in California (Ericson, 1975; 1977; 1978; 1981; Ericson et al , 1975; Singer and Ericson, 1977). All samples were analyzed as CO 2 gas at close to 1 atm in a 7.5L proportional counter with three energy channels. Radiocarbon ages are based by convention on the 5568 ± 30 yr half-life. The biospheric standard is 95% the count rate of …
