  • Considerations for Post-processing Parameters in Mixed-Method 3D Analyses

    Open Access•Robert Z Selden, Lauren N Butaric et al.•ARTICLE•Advances in Archaeological Practice•2021•Referencias: 25

The production of three-dimensional (3D) digital meshes of surface and computed tomographic (CT) data has become widespread in morphometric analyses of anthropological and archaeological data. Given that processing methods are not standardized, this leaves questions regarding the comparability of processed and digitally curated 3D datasets. The goal of this study was to identify those processing parameters that result in the most consistent fit b…

  • Intra‐tooth stable isotope analysis of dentine

    Open Access•Paul A Sandberg, Paul Sandberg et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2014•Citada por: 37•Referencias: 87

Intra‐tooth stable isotope analysis of dentine provides a more sensitive means to examine infant and childhood life history in the past than conventional cross‐sectional analyses that rely on age‐at‐death. In addition, reconstructions of early diet and life history using an intra‐tooth approach circumvent potential problems associated with mortality bias, which may operate strongly during infancy and childhood. We present new intra‐tooth stable c…

  • Irrigation and infection

Open Access•Amber Campbell Hibbs, W Evan Secor et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2011•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 46

Schistosomiasis has been deemed “the most important water‐based disease from a global public‐health perspective” in modern populations. To better understand the burden of schistosomiasis in ancient populations, we conducted immunologic examinations of desiccated tissue samples from two ancient Nubian populations, Wadi Halfa ( N = 46) and Kulubnarti ( N = 191). Saqia irrigated agriculture increases the available habitat for the aquatic vector snai…

  • Congenital scoliosis

    Open Access•Lynn Kilgore, Dennis Van Gerven•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2010•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 49

Reports of congenital scoliosis (CS) are rare in the literature of paleopathology. This study details severe CS in the complete, well preserved skeleton of an adult male, dated to AD 550-800, from the Sudanese site of Kulubnarti. This skeleton, designated as S-16, is the most complete archaeologically derived example of CS to be documented. Copyright (c) 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd

  • Palaeoepidemiological Patterns of Trauma in a Medieval Nubian Skeletal Population

Open Access•Lynn Kilgore, Robert Jurmain et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1997

Evidence of trauma was investigated in a well-preserved skeletal sample from the Medieval Sudanese Nubian site of Kulubnarti. The skeletal materials derive from two temporally over-lapping Christian cemeteries, dating from the sixth to circa the sixteenth century. The available sample consisted of the skeletons of 146 adults which were investigated for fractures of the long bones, crania and the hands and feet, as well as for dislocations and mus…
